TheKalos region (Japanese:カロス地方Kalosregion) is aregion of thePokémon world. It was the sixthcore series region to be introduced and is the setting ofPokémon X and Y andPokémon Legends: Z-A.

It is shaped like a five-pointed star, with one of its biggest cities beingLumiose City in the north-central part of the region. It features a vast network of rivers and waterways snaking through much of its landscape, cities and towns. North-east of Lumiose City lies a mountain range where more frigid temperatures exist, extending down into the plains below. Western Kalos features a vast ocean, where the shoreside city ofShalour City lies in the middle of a cove.

Etymology and design concept

The map of Europe showing the Kalos region as northernFrance.

Etymology

According toJunichi Masuda, Kalos's name is derived from the Greek word κάλλοςkállos, meaning beauty.[1]

Design concept

Main article:Pokémon world in relation to the real world → Kalos

Kalos is based onFrance;[1][2] specifically, it most closely resembles the northern half ofMetropolitan France. According to Junichi Masuda, France was chosen as a basis for Kalos because the development team considered it a good fit for Pokémon X and Y's theme of "beauty".[3]

Prehistory

Long ago in the past, the king of KalosAZ united the Kalosregion with prosperity for the first time using technology unlike any seen during that era. At some point, AZ also obtained anEternal Flower Floette that belonged to his late mother.

3,000 years prior toPokémon X and Y, a war broke out between Kalos and another region. As the war grew more violent and uglier, AZ was forced to send his ownFloette into battle, which eventually led to her death. Determined to bring the Pokémon back to life, AZ built a machine that, usingInfinity Energy, ressurected his Floette. Unable to forgive those who took it from him, AZ turned the machine into theultimate weapon and blasted the battlefield, killing many humans and Pokémon and ending the war as a result.

As a side effect of the blast, both AZ and Floette were given eternal life. Horrified for what AZ has done, the Floette left him. AZ soon left Kalos and started wandering aimlessly around theworld, visiting otherregions such asGalar andHoenn. Another apparent side effect of the blast was the creation ofMega Stones fromEvolution stones being irradiated by Infinity Energy, which led to the creation ofMega Evolution. During the war, AZ's younger brother wished to claim Kalos out of his own greed, but after the incident, his brother realized the error of his ways and sought to make amends for his actions by burying the weapon whereGeosenge Town was eventually built on, in an attempt to prevent it from ever being used again, and only telling his progeny know where it was.

2,000 years prior, during AZ's aimless wandering, a man of great power asked for his help in a way to protect Kalos. So, as an attempt to atone to Floette for what he had done, he built a device that would share the eternal life he had bestowed on her,Ange, embedded into thePrism Tower. He dreamed of the day he could use Ange after reuniting with Floette, but that day did not come to pass.

800 years prior,Xerneas releasedX/Yveltal absorbedY life energy throughout the Kalos region upon reaching the end of its life cycle. Afterward, it withdrew into hibernation deep within a forestX/mountain rangeY. 300 years prior,Parfum Palace was built by a king who wished to display his power to all.

At some point, a descendant of AZ's brother,Lysandre, went on ajourney around Kalos with his Pokémon reached out to help those suffering. Among them was a young boy namedCorbeau, providing him with support since he had no family to rely on. At first, they were grateful, but eventually, they began to take his help for granted and demanded more and more, which eventually led Lysandre to lose faith in humanity and formTeam Flare to use AZ's ultimate weapon and blast away all, but the members of Team Flare.

Kalos has historically had a strained relationship with theGalar region.[4]

Contemporary history

The contemporary history of Kalos differs slightly based on the title of the game being played.

Pokémon X and Y

Calem/Serena leaves their home inVaniville Town, meetingShauna and Serena/Calem (not chosen asplayer), who invite them to join the pair for a meeting inAquacorde Town. Calem, Serena, and Shauna receive theirfirst partner Pokémon fromTierno and aPokédex fromTrevor on behalf ofProfessor Sycamore. After delivering a letter to theirMom from Professor Sycamore, they head on an adventure traveling across Kalos challengingGyms in order to earn eightBadges to then challenge thePokémon League. Over the course of theirjourney, they come into contact withTeam Flare, an organization whose goal is to create a "beautiful and better" world while making money. They try to do this by stealingFossils fromGlittering Cave, siphoning electricity from theKalos Power Plant, stealing thePoké Balls from thePoké Ball Factory inLaverre City, and attempting to agitate and capture anAbomasnow. Calem/Serena also encounters a mysterious giant calledAZ on several occasions, initially onKalos Route 13. After earning their seventh Badge fromOlympia, Calem/Serena is contacted byLysandre, a man introduced by Professor Sycamore, who reveals both himself as the leader of Team Flare, and his intention to use the "ultimate weapon" to eliminate all life in the world except for those in Team Flare. Calem/Serena battle Lysandre, first inLysandre Labs, and again in theTeam Flare Secret HQ, before making their way down to the basement where they findXerneasX/YveltalY and battle them, before battling against Lysandre once more. Even though Lysandre is defeated, and Calem/Serena and their friends reason with him, he still fires the ultimate weapon. The blast the weapon emits destroys it and buries Lysandre and the HQ, ultimately disbanding Team Flare. Calem/Serena then heads to the Pokémon League where they defeat theElite Four andDiantha, becomingChampion of Kalos. Professor Sycamore then holds a grand ceremony in Kalos to celebrate Calem/Serena's victory, and all of their friends' efforts in defeatingTeam Flare. During the ceremony, a large mysterious man challenges Calem/Serena to a battle and is defeated, but is grateful to them, for in the battle, he finally felt free from the sorrow and rage he felt in creating the ultimate weapon. As such, the man is revealed to be the ancient kingAZ, and having once again become the man who loved Pokémon with all his heart, his long lost partnerFloette returns to him, resulting in a tearful reunion.

As revealed inPokémon Legends: Z-A, during the events ofPokémon X and Y, Lysandre sought to activate bothAnge and the ultimate weapon at the same time. However, the activation of Ange required Eternal Flower Floette, which Lysandre couldn't find, and thus he settled for activating only the ultimate weapon. After the ultimate weapon was reactivated, the shock caused Ange to reawaken as well, unleashing itsMega Power all over Lumiose City.

It is also revealed that Lysandre survived his supposed demise in Geosenge thanks toZygarde, but has become largely amnesiac. Due to the ultimate weapon, he has taken on a similar affliction to AZ and become cursed with the longevity of three thousand years. His hair has become shorter and paler, and his left eye appears to have been blinded.

After the ceremony, Calem/Serena is invited toKiloude City to partake in itsBattle Maison, and is given a train pass for it by Professor Sycamore. After partaking in a few battles there, they are informed by Professor Sycamore that the Anistar sundial can radiate special energy, and theirMega Ring is upgraded to be able to locate Mega Stones hidden across Kalos during twilight. Calem/Serena then returns toLumiose City, where they are contacted byLooker, who has a series of cases he wants them to investigate. Calem/Serena takes part in a series of trials across Lumiose and become's Looker's second-in-command. During the investigations, Calem/Serena and Looker meet an orphan girl namedEmma and herEspurr named Mimi, who are living in the alleys of Lumiose. Eventually, Looker offers to let Emma live in theLooker Bureau. However, soon after, a mysterious figure vandalizes theLumiose Museum and also lures Trainers in to steal their Pokémon. Upon investigating these cases, and through the help ofMalva, they learn that the crimes are being committed byEssentia, who is actually Emma in a suit that enhances her power, but she is unconscious in doing this: she is actually being controlled byXerosic. Calem/Serena and Looker track Xerosic down to a secret floor in Lysandre Labs, and manage to defeat Essentia in a series of battles. Looker captures Xerosic, and takes him away, and parts ways with Calem/Serena and Emma, and despite the latter's hesitance, Looker reassures her that their bonds will always be strong no matter how far apart they are.

Between X and Y and Legends: Z-A

AZ becomes the owner ofHotel Z. 2 years after Pokémon X and Y,Quasartico Inc. is founded inLumiose City and later began an urban redevelopment plan to turn the city into a place wherehumans andPokémon can live together in harmony.Emma inherits the head role at her detective agency fromLooker.Mable becomes the director of thePokémon Research Lab.

6 months prior to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, high concentrations of Mega Power began forcing some wild Pokémon to undergoRogue Mega Evolution. MegaPidgeot was the first Pokémon to be affected by this phenomenon. AZ and his Floette attempted to battle the Pokémon, but he was unable to keep on top of the outbreaks due to his advanced age.Urbain/Taunie stepped in for AZ and battled with Floette. Their success impressed Quasartico's Vinnie, who was also responding to the issue, and he began sharing some intelligence on Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon with the young Trainer. These events inspired Urbain/Taunie to createTeam MZ in order to help quell further Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

After his grandmother threw out his sewing supplies,Naveen ran away and wandered Lumiose until he eventually met Urbain/Taunie and joined Team MZ in exchange for studio space. After her roommate signed on with a talent agency and moved out,Lida could not pay her rent alone, but eventually met Urbain/Taunie and joined Team MZ in exchange for lodging.

Around 6 months prior to theMega Dimension DLC,Darkrai wandered into Lumiose and settled on the top ofPrism Tower to stay away from everyone down below. As a result, however, it got exposed to all theMega Power leaking fromAnge, causing its nightmare powers to be enhanced and go out of control. This createdHyperspace Lumiose from the subconcious thoughts and memories of all people and Pokémon of the city. Around the same time,Ansha happened uponHoopa, heavily weakened after losing a battle to a mighty Pokémon it played a prank on. She fed it a fresh-bakeddonut, granting its strength back and since then, it followed her around, helping her visit Hyperspace Lumiose and find the mighty,Legendary PokémonRayquaza as a gift to her mother,Diantha.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Five years after X and Y,Paxton/Harmony travels toLumiose City by train and befriendsUrbain/Taunie,Lida, andNaveen.

Mega Dimension

After the main game, mysterious distortions appeared without warning in Lumiose City, which appear to connect to a mysterious space calledHyperspace Lumiose.

Geography

One of the region's castles inPokémon the Series: XY
Map of the Kalos region, with its three primary divisions highlighted

The geography of Kalos varies greatly within the region. The region is naturally bordered by a vast ocean to the west and northwest, and the eastern and southern borders are formed by mountain ranges. These borders give the region its signature star-like shape, as a large peninsula reaches out to the sea in the northwest, creating one point, and elsewhere the coastline, mountain ranges and rivers create the remaining four points. Kalos is made up of three distinct divisions, all with their own unique characteristics in both geography and Pokémon: Central Kalos, Coastal Kalos, and Mountain Kalos. The bustlingLumiose City is located near the point where all three divisions meet.

Central Kalos is located in the centric and southern parts of the region. The area is dominated by large forested plains with multiple rivers crossing it, with very few changes in elevation. Several towns are surrounded by walls of some sort, and there are also many old castles andchâteaus. Many important human settlements and landmarks are located here, such asVaniville Town,Santalune City, a portion of Lumiose City, and theParfum Palace.

Coastal Kalos is located by the vast sea in the western parts of Kalos. The mainly explored area is a strip between mountains and the sea. This area is dominated by rocky shores in the southwest and lush beaches and forests in the northwest. Most human settlements are located by the sea. The peninsula in the northwest is known for itsmenhir stones. There are many important locations, such as theReflection Cave,Geosenge Town, andShalour City with itsTower of Mastery.

Mountain Kalos is located in the eastern reaches of the region. The area is largely mountainous and the temperatures tend to be cooler than in the other parts, with some routes and settlements having snow covering them. To the north there is a marshy area that is said to be haunted. However, the settlements are plentiful, and there are some important landmarks, such as theKalos Power Plant that is built on a harsh wasteland, thePoké Ball Factory inLaverre City, and thePokémon League.

Kiloude City is located outside the three divisions, and is only reachable by train from Lumiose City. The city is relatively isolated from the other parts of the region, being completely surrounded by mountains.

ThePaldea region is near Kalos, just over a mountain range.[5]

Demographics

The Kalos region has a total population of 1288 including all the towns, cities, routes, and areas. Upon its introduction inGeneration VI, it was the largest region by population. Currently it is second largest region by population

Notable locations

Kalos has sixteen cities and towns, and a Pokémon League.

Like in Unova, the routes of Kalos start counting again from 1, likely to represent its geographical isolation from the previously introduced regions. There are 22 routes in total.

InPokémon the Series, like Unova, Kalos was far enough away from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh to require traveling via airplane (as evidenced by howAsh andAlexa arrived in the region, as well as how Ash and Serena left the region for Kanto and Hoenn, respectively).

Trivia

  • The reference to Kalos, ruled by its king, having fought a war with neighboring regions 300 years ago may allude to theWar of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) and theTreaty of Utrecht (1713). This conflict, fought over the vacant Spanish throne, set France against a coalition of European powers—namely, theHoly Roman Empire,Great Britain, theDutch Republic, andSavoy—and concluded with the FrenchBourbon dynasty securing the Spanish crown. The timing is notable, as these events occurred 300 years before the release ofPokémon X and Y in 2013. In addition, thePalace of Versailles—the likely real-world inspiration forParfum Palace—had by then been completed in the form recognized today.
  • Kalos having a rough history with theGalar region, as revealed inPokémon Legends: Z-A, is similar to the history between France and England, the latter of which Galar is based on.
  • The English and Japanese names of cities and towns in Kalos are derived from various ingredients used in fragrances. Likewise, the names in the European versions are derived from various terminologies related to art.
  • Kalos is the onlyregion in which:
    • All Gym Leaders and Elite Four members use teams consisting entirely of Pokémon of the type they use.
    • All Routes have alternate names.
    • There is more than one status-healing local specialty food item: theLumiose Galette and theShalour Sable, although the latter cannot be obtained inPokémon X and Y without trading.
  • The Kalos region has the largest regionalPokédex of all regions.
  • Kalos has the second largest population of any region, only behindPaldea, with 1,288 inhabitants living in its cities, towns, and other areas.
  • Theadjectival form of Kalos is "Kalosian", as seen inKiloude City's map description.
  • The Kalos region is shaped like a pentagon, a design also reflected in the Kalos Pokédex. This may be a nod to how France is often referred to as "L'Hexagone" due to its roughly hexagonal shape.
