Judgment (Japanese:さばきのつぶてJudgment Pebble) is a damage-dealingNormal-typemove introduced inGeneration IV. It is thesignature move ofArceus and varies in type depending on thePlate held by the user.
Effect
Judgment inflicts damage and has no secondary effect. Thetype of Judgment depends on the type ofPlate held by the user, being Normal-type if there is no held Plate.
Generation IV
Judgment is affected byNormalize.
Generation V
Judgment is unaffected byNormalize.
Generations VI and VII
IfMagic Room is in effect, Judgment's type will always be Normal regardless of the Plate held.
Judgment is unaffected byNormalize,Pixilate,Refrigerate, andAerilate. However, it is affected byIon Deluge (if the move would be Normal-type) andElectrify.
Generation VII
Judgment's type is unaffected byZ-Crystals held by the user, remaining a Normal-type move.
Generation VIII
Pokémon Sword and Shield
Judgment is programmed intoPokémon Sword and Shield, but cannot be selected in a battle as no available Pokémon can learn it. However, it can be called byMetronome. It has no animation, so the game will crash ifbattle effects are enabled.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Judgment works like it did in previous generations.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Judgment's PP was reduced to 5. Judgment's type is now determined by which Plate Arceus last interacted with, and thus the move will match Arceus's current type. When used by another Pokémon throughMimic, Judgment will always be Normal-type regardless of what type it was when copied by Mimic. Unlike in other games, Judgment's animation is slightly different depending on which of the eighteen types it is currently using.
The move's function drastically changes if the last plate Arceus interacted with is theLegend Plate. In battle, Arceus gains the ability to change type when using Judgment, based on the selected opponent's type. While selecting a move, Judgment displays the type that it will become against the selected opponent, if used that turn. This is similar to Unown's signature move Hidden Power.
- Judgment will become a type that is super effective against the target, prioritizing any double weaknesses of dual-type targets.
- If multiple types are equally effective, Judgment will change to a type that best resists the target'sprimary type, prioritizing immunities, regardless of what the target's secondary type may be.
- If multiple types are still equally valid, Judgment will change to the type that best resists the target's secondary type, if any. Otherwise one type is chosen at random.
This calculation is done on each turn, so if there are multiple valid types, Judgment's type may vary between them each turn.
At the start of battle Arceus will be aNormal type. Upon using Judgment, Arceus will first transform into whatever type Judgment has chosen, and then use the move. This means Judgment will always receive asame-type attack bonus. Arceus will transform even if Judgment misses the opponent. Arceus will not transform however, if the move could not be executed due to itsparalysis ordrowsy status condition. Arceus will also revert back into a Normal type at the end of battle.
The following table indicates which type Judgment will become based on every possible type combination. Note that some type combinations have multiple possible outputs, which Judgment selects between randomly.

Generation IX
Since Judgment's type only depends on the held Plate, its type will not be changed if the userTerastallizes into a type different to the Plate's type.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
While neither Arceus nor Judgment are legitimately obtainable prior toWiiWare games, the move still exists inExplorers of Time, Darkness andSky data—in the Japanese versions its original name ofさばきのつぶて has been retained, while in the English versions it was replaced with the placeholder name of$$$. Both languages only include the same placeholder as its description. Since Plates do not exist, it instead uses the user's primary type.
In theWiiWare games, Judgment's type depends on the version of the game played. InKeep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, it is a Fire-type move; inLet's Go! Stormy Adventure Squad, it is a Water-type move; and inGo For It! Light Adventure Squad, it is an Electric-type move. This is due to the absence of Plates and to the fact that Arceus instead takes the type represented by each version.
The move is unobtainable and has only dummy data inGates to Infinity as Arceus does not appear in the game.
InSuper Mystery Dungeon, Judgment deals damage as if it were the same type as the user. Again due to the absence of Plates, this will almost always be Normal-type damage. However, Judgment will change to Water-type if the user's type is changed withSoak (but not if a type is added to the user due toForest's Curse orTrick-or-Treat).
