Route 33   Route 35

Route 34 (Japanese:34ばんどうろRoute 34) is a route in centralJohto connectingIlex Forest andGoldenrod City. The route is home to Johto'sDay Care.

Route description

The route is essentially straightforward after exiting Ilex Forest. There is a path where no long grass grows; however, it is filled with many Trainers.

The Day Care, run by an old couple, is one of the most prominent things located here. Found merely steps away from the famousGoldenrod City, this center allows forcompatible male and female Pokémon tobreed and produce anEgg. It also allows Trainers to leave up to two of their Pokémon to level up, costing like otherPokémon Day Cares,$100 plus an additional$100 per level up for each Pokémon. In theGeneration II games, theplayer can enter the Day Care's backyard to interact with their Pokémon and surf or fish in the pond, but this is not possible inPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver due to the Pokémon now being off-limits to the player in an area inside the Day Care itself.

After gettingSurf, a secret area of the route is accessible. It has threeAce Trainer sisters: Irene, Jenn, and Kate, who the player will battle in that order in Generation II. InHeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Irene and Jenn will instead battle a Double Battle with the player.

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Route 34 appeared fromTricks of the Trade toThe Fortune Hunters, although some of the intervening episodes, such asFowl Play!, may have taken place inIlex Forest instead. The route's landmarks includePalmpona,Len Town,Olesia'sWooper preschool, andOnix Tunnel.Ashcaught hisTotodile around this area inThe Totodile Duel. InThe Fortune Hunters,Ash's group visited aDay Care located in this area, similar to thegames, although this particular Day Care turned out to be just a front forButch andCassidy's latest Pokémon-stealing scheme.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Route 34 first appeared inGligar Glide, whereGold was spending a night there, when theEgg thatProfessor Elm had entrusted with him hatched into aTogepi while he slept. While Professor Elm was happy to learn that Gold had succeeded in hatching the Egg, he was outraged when it turned out Gold had inadvertently caused Togepi to pick up his gambling habits before theSpike Ball Pokémon had even hatched. TheProfessor then sent Gold to check out thePokémon Day Care, from where Togepi's Egg had been found. After Gold had helped theDay-Care Couple catch some runawaybaby Pokémon, the Day-Care Lady invited him for sometraining inside the Day Care. Meanwhile, the Day-Care Man made a phone call toJasmine, revealing that Gold's Togepi was actually the offspring of her twoTogetic, and inviting her to come take a look at it.

InQuilava Quandary, the Day-Care Lady locked Gold into a room filled with powerful Pokémon and told him to battle them for his training. While reluctant at first, Gold was quickly forced to battle the Pokémon, although the Day-Care Lady forced him to do so without the goggles andcue stick he usually used. While Gold was undergoing his training, the Day-Care Lady mused to herself how she was taking advantage of Gold's desire to train in order to make him make some of their lethargic Pokémon get some exercise without her having to do anything. As a result of the training, Gold'sCyndaquil,Exbo, ended upevolving intoQuilava. When the Day-Care Couple heard of an earthquake that had struckEcruteak City, they got worried of Jasmine's safety and told Gold to go find her, giving him aKing's Rock as a reward for completing his training.

InPopular Pupitar,Yellow found herself and her uncleWilton at the Day Care afterLugia had attacked their boat at theWhirl Islands. InPlayful Porygon2, the Day-Care Couple revealed that the medics who had saved their lives had brought them to the Day Care, based on a sketch of Jasmine in Yellow's notebook. In addition, Yellow'sChuchu andRed'sPika had gotten friendly with each other while Yellow was unconscious and had ended up producing an Egg together, much to Yellow's shock.

InThe Last Battle VII, the Day Care was attacked byNeo Team RocketGrunts, who tried to steal theRainbow andSilver Wings thatGreen had hidden on Yellow's straw hat. Fortunately, though, Yellow managed to escape from them and fled toIlex Forest.

Trivia

  • InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is aglitch withAce Trainer Kate. She will only battle the player if they walk straight down the path. If the player walks to either side of her, she will apologize as she would after the player has defeated her. If the player walks down the path towards her after talking to her on the side she will somehow see them while facing the wrong way and then battle.
  • In the Japanese versions, the threeAce Trainer sisters all have names which start with "Mari".
  • The Day Care man hasan unused piece of dialogue in theGeneration II games,"Not yet...". This would likely be used during the breeding process to notify the player that the game needs more time to generate theEgg.
