Jasmine (Japanese:ミカンMikan) is theGym Leader ofOlivine City'sGym, known officially as theOlivine Gym. Shespecializes inSteel-typePokémon, and she gives theMineral Badge toTrainers who defeat her inbattle. She also appears inSinnoh to give TrainersHM07 (Waterfall) and to compete in Sinnoh'sSuper Contests.
In the core series games
Jasmine appears inPokémon Gold, Silver,Crystal,HeartGold, and SoulSilver as the Gym Leader of theOlivine Gym. Her title in these games is "The Steel-Clad Defense Girl." She also appears inPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum, andtheir remakes.
Jasmine is a shy girl who has trouble speaking. She is compassionate, and whenAmphy, theAmpharos in theOlivine Lighthouse, falls ill, Jasmine looks after it. Amphy will only take the medicine theplayer brings from Jasmine.
When the player first meets Jasmine, she will refuse to battle, as she is busy caring for Amphy. She requests that aspecial medicine be brought from theCianwood City pharmacy. When it is retrieved, she uses it to heal the Ampharos and returns to the Gym afterwards. In battle, she uses the newly-discoveredSteel-type Pokémon, but aGentleman in the Lighthouse says she used to trainRock-type Pokémon such asOnix. Once defeated, she will yield theMineral Badge andTM23 (Iron Tail).
InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, after defeating theElite Four, Jasmine can be fought multiple times inSaffron City'sFighting Dojo. She will use a stronger team here but will not appear until herPokégear phone number has been obtained at the Olivine City diner. She goes there every afternoon, between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, and will afterwards travel toKanto for battles on Wednesday afternoons. After exchanging numbers at the diner, visiting Jasmine at her Gym in Olivine will cause her to offer to make a trade with the player, although the player will need to talk to Jasmine a second time because she will be nervous about it. She offers aSteelix nicknamed Rusty that holds aSoothe Bell. She will accept any Pokémon in exchange, being the first in-game trade where this is possible. Rusty isn't the same as her battling Steelix, as Rusty is male whereas the other is female.

InPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum, and their respectiveremakes,Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Jasmine is staying inSunyshore City for a while, which she says reminds her of home withits lighthouse and its location on the sea. She also occasionally entersMaster RankSuper ContestsDPPt/Super Contest ShowsBDSP with her Steelix, nicknamed Rusty. She gives the playerHM07DPPt/TM99BDSP (Waterfall) after defeating the eighthGym Leader,Volkner. A conversation withErika in HeartGold and SoulSilver would seem to suggest Jasmine's appearance inSinnoh occurs after the plot of theJohto games.
Jasmine also appears inPokémon Black 2 and White 2, taking part in thePokémon World Tournament. She can be faced in theJohto Leaders,Type Expert, andWorld Leaders Tournaments.

Pokémon the Series
History
Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Jasmine debuted inFight for the Light!, where she interruptedAsh'sGymbattle because her apprenticeJanina was pretending to be the officialGym Leader. Jasmine went on to dismiss Janina for impersonating her and also covering herOnix in wax to repel normally effectiveWater attacks. Jasmine apologized to Ash on Janina's behalf and added that she would battle him when herAmpharos was feeling better.
Ash andhis friends later visited theShining Lighthouse and met up with Jasmine, her grandfatherMyron, and her Ampharos, nicknamed Sparkle. Later, Jasmine and the others fled the lighthouse afterJames had hisWeezing smother them with its thickSmog.Team Rocket kidnapped Sparkle, and incidentallyBrock, though Janina and her Onix managed to rescue the pair, after which Ash sent the trio blasting off. After seeing Janina's heroism, Jasmine sent her young apprentice along with Ash and his friends to collect some medicine for Sparkle fromCianwood City.
InMachoke, Machoke Man!, Ash and the others arrived in Cianwood, and Janina took an express service back to Olivine City to deliver the medicine. Janina later called Ash to inform him that Jasmine was still not up to battling because she was concerned for Sparkle. FollowingChuck's suggestion, the group took a detour through theWhirl Islands and later returned to Olivine City inThrowing in the Noctowl for Ash's match.
Jasmine and herSteelix helped Ash recover hisPikachu from Team Rocket before sending them blasting off inNerves of Steelix!. Ash and Jasmine later had their Gym battle. Though Pikachu defeated Jasmine'sMagnemite in the first round, he was left exhausted and was later defeated by Steelix. In the final round,Cyndaquil faced off against Steelix. The round proved to be difficult for both sides, but Cyndaquil eventually claimed victory after it usedFlamethrower to transform Steelix'sSandstorm attack into a powerfulfire whirl. Jasmine subsequently gave Ash his sixth Badge, theMineral Badge.
She later reappeared in a flashback inWhy? Wynaut!.
Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

After a long absence, Jasmine reappeared inSunyshore City, wearing herGeneration IV outfit, inFour Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!. Ash and his friends were surprised to see her again as she watchedKenny practice some of hisContest combinations. Jasmine explained that she was traveling around and studyingContest Battles to become stronger. AfterFlint rescued the group from Team Rocket, Jasmine asked him for a battle and he accepted. Jasmine's battle style hadn't changed much, however, and Flint'sInfernape knocked out her Steelix with aFlare Blitz.
Jasmine joined Ash and his friends back at thePokémon Center, where she toldDawn about her fears about being a Gym Leader and explained that it was important for a person to follow their own path. The following day, Jasmine announced that while she enjoyed herjourney, she would return to her position as the Olivine Gym Leader to continue hertraining.
Character
Jasmine is typically gentle and soft-spoken, though inbattle, she is markedly more confident and somewhat aggressive, making this a notable departure from her in-game personality. InNerves of Steelix!, she was not afraid to take onTeam Rocket and was quite vocal in lettingAsh know that she wouldn't go easy on him during battle. Jasmine holds herself to account in her role asOlivine City'sGym Leader and also expects these standards to be upheld by her apprentices. She is, however, very mindful of her limitations and will seek time away from her Gym Leader duties to collect herself.
Her battle strategy is simply to attack her opponent's Pokémon. Jasmine's handling ofSteelix inFour Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port! was much the same as her strategy during her battle against Ash inNerves of Steelix!. In both cases, she was reliant on Steelix'sIron Tail andSandstorm. She, however, hopes to implement changes like adding offensive techniques to improve her skills as Gym Leader.
