Mareanie and James

Before being caught by James, Mareanie formed a crush on adifferently colored Mareanie after he saved her from aTentacruel. Later on, though, Mareanie spotted her crush giving aCorsola's horn to another Mareanie, leaving her heartbroken.

Mareanie debuted inThe Sun, the Scare, the Secret Lair!, in which she encountered James when he was wearing a scuba diving helmet resembling a Corsola. She latched onto his helmet, mistaking it for a real Corsola, causing it to crack and flood with water. After James reunited withTeam Rocket, Mareanie latched onto his head and injected him with poison, which caused him to resemble aMareanie, causing Mareanie to become smitten with James. Later, during a battle withAsh, Mareanie jumped in to help Team Rocket and launched aSpike Cannon towardsPikachu. With Mareanie's help, Team Rocket gained the upper hand against Ash,poisoning hisRowlet and dealing serious damage to Pikachu. AsJessie's Mimikyu was about to launch one final attack,Bewear suddenly appeared from the water and took Team Rocket away with it. After being dropped off atBewear's den, James asked Mareanie to join his team, which she accepted. After catching her, James called her back out, and Mareanie affectionately latched onto his head, making him look like a Mareanie again.

InA Team-on-Team Tussle!, Mareanie assisted Team Rocket in their quest to obtain aDarkinium Z. She battled aTotemAlolanRaticate, which protected theZ-Crystal. Mareanie attacked with Spike Cannon, agitating it to follow them away from the Darkinium Z. She was then quickly defeated by Raticate's powerful attacks.

Mareanie and her former crush

InFighting Back the Tears!, Mareanie was reunited with her former crush, which evolved intoToxapex and fought James for her affections. She later ran away from Team Rocket after she overheard James talking about leaving her with Toxapex, and found sanctuary with Ash atProfessor Kukui's house. The next morning, while walking along the beach, she was attacked by another Tentacruel, but James saved her. Despite their reunion, James insisted onreleasing Mareanie, leaving her in tears. However, James was then challenged to a fight by Toxapex to make Mareanie happy, which ended in a tie. Following the fight, Mareanie decided to stay with James, which he accepted.

InWhy Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?, Mareanie learnedKnock Off. Realizing that they could now use their Darkinium Z, Team Rocket tookGiovanni's advice and traveled toUla'ula Island to get aZ-Ring from the Ula'ulaIsland kahuna. After aGengar had stolen the Darkinium Z, Team Rocket gave chase and eventually managed to recover their Z-Crystal. When the Gengar then began attacking them,Nanu gave Team Rocket aZ-Power Ring, allowing James and Mareanie to performBlack Hole Eclipse to defeat Gengar.

InSecuring the Future!, Mareanie joined the rest ofAlola in showeringNecrozma with light so it could return to itsnormal form.

InThe Dealer of Destruction!, Team Rocket metTeam Skull's leaderGuzma. They challenged him with Mareanie andWobbuffet, only to be defeated.

InDrawn with the Wind!, Mareanie battled Ash andhis friends for the final time, fightingSandy andAsh's Meltan. Mareanie poisoned Sandy with Sludge Bomb but struggled against Meltan due to itsSteel-type. She was then knocked out by Sandy'sDouble-Edge.

Mareanie battling Wobbuffet in the Alola League

InLeague Offenders and Defenders!, Mareanie and Wobbuffet teamed up to stop someTeam Skull Grunts from destroying theManalo Stadium. InBattle Royal 151!, James had Mareanie by his side during in theBattle Royal preliminary round of theManalo Conference. Thanks to Team Rocket's strategy of avoiding battles in this round, Mareanie was among the 16Pokémon still standing at the end, allowing James to proceed to the next round.

InThe Battlefield of Truth and Love!, James used Mareanie in his battle againstJessie during the Manalo Conference, where they went up against Wobbuffet. Having been ordered by Jessie to lose the match so she could advance, James had Mareanie use attacks that Wobbuffet could reflect. He was then about to order Mareanie to take a fall when he saw that she wanted to battle properly for him. James decided to ignore Jessie's instructions and had Mareanie fire a relentless barrage of Spike Cannons, which were able to break through Wobbuffet'sCounter and defeat it. As a result, James moved on to the second round, where he was to face off againstGladion.

InImitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, James used Mareanie in his battle against Gladion, where they went up againstLycanroc. Mareanie attempted to use Black Hole Eclipse, but Lycanroc countered withContinental Crush before defeating Mareanie withStone Edge, eliminating James from the tournament.

InThank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, the trio received an order from Giovanni to return to theTeam Rocket HQ due to their lack of achievements in Alola. Knowing their Pokémon wouldn't be happy at the HQ, Jessie and James decided to leave them behind. However, when James told Mareanie about their upcoming departure, she was excited and believed she would come along. While Mareanie and Mimikyu were sleeping the following night, James discreetly entrusted the trio's Z-Power Ring and Alola base to her and the others. He promised to return one day, before departing toKanto with his teammates. Mareanie was later seen playing with Mimikyu andStufful.

InThat New Old Gang of Mine!, Mareanie was seen in the forest, carrying aBerry alongside Mimikyu, Bewear, and Stufful.

InAll Out, All of the Time!, Mareanie was reunited with James after he crash-landed in the hot spring next to Bewear's den.

Mareanie appeared in a fantasy inRocket Revengers! when Team Rocket reminisced about their old Pokémon.

Personality and characteristics

Mareanie fantasizing about marrying James

Similar to several other Pokémon James has owned, Mareanie is very fond of James and occasionally engulfs herTrainer's head in her ten spiked tentacles. The resulting poisoning causes James to look like a Mareanie. Mareanie has an attraction to James's appearance in this state, one of the reasons she decided to join him. In addition, Mareanie is shown to be a romantic, as seen inThe Professors' New Adventure!, where she was drawn to the sound ofProfessor Kukui andBurnet's wedding, causing her to fantasize about marrying James, only to be snapped out of her delusion by her Trainer calling out to her. However, before she first poisoned James, she was shown to be quite grumpy, as shown when she slapped Jessie's hand away when she first stroked her.

When James attempted to catch a femaleFrillish inFighting Back the Tears!, Mareanie saw her as a rival for his affections and scared her away withSpike Cannon to prevent this capture. She then cried when James scolded her for doing so. She was shown to be very loyal to her Trainer inWhy Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?, where she used the newly learned moveKnock Off to attack Jessie when the latter tried to steal James's creme puff.
