In-game trade

From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
Jump to navigationJump to search

Anin-game trade[1][2] orNPC trade[citation needed] is atrade made withNPCs in thecore series andspin-offPokémon games. The process uses the same trading sequence as player trades and is usually done forPokémon that are difficult or impossible to obtain through other means, or for Pokémon unavailable at that point of the game. In later games, the traded Pokémon often has special moves, likeEgg Moves. Starting inGeneration III, the player cannot initiate a trade with another game unless they have at least two Pokémon in their party, but this restriction does not apply to in-game trades.

Prior toPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the NPCTrainer will always specify a Pokémon they want to trade for. The Pokémon the player receives in the trade will have a fixedOriginal Trainer andnickname; in later games theTrainer ID number, held item,Nature,IVs, and/orlevel can be fixed as well.

Like Pokémon traded externally, the traded Pokémon will be treated as anoutsider, and gain a boosted amount ofexperience points inbattle. Prior toGeneration V, every Pokémon has the same level as the Pokémon it was traded for, except inPokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

List of in-game trades

The following lists of in-game trade Pokémon only include theirnicknames andOriginal Trainer names in English and Japanese. For these names in other languages, seeList of in-game trades in other languages.

Generation I

This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Check that the Gen II held items of trade Evolutions and Japanese Blue's Krabby are correct.

AllTrainer ID numbers andIVs are random in theGeneration I games. TheOriginal Trainer always uses thehardcoded text string 0x5D, which is displayed as "TRAINER" (Japanese:トレーナーTrainer) in the game's language. In Western language versions of the handheld games andPokémon Stadium, this string is displayed in ALLCAPS ("TRAINER" in English), whereas inPokémon Stadium 2 it is displayed in title case ("Trainer" in English). When transferred usingPoké Transporter, this string is permanently converted to title case in the language of the game it was transferred from, being changed to use a literal string instead of a language-sensitive control character.

Theheld item column refers to the item the Pokémon will be holding if it is traded to aGeneration II game. With the exception of Pokémon that evolve during that trade and Krabby in Japanese Blue, they have the same item awild Pokémon of the same specieswould have if it were traded to a Generation II game; Pokémon that evolve during the trade have the item their evolved form would have, while Krabby hasTM13 (Snore) instead ofTM33 (Ice Punch). Because the Trainer ID numbers and IVs are random, these Pokémon can beShiny whentransferred to aGeneration II game orPokémon Bank.

Pokémon Red and Green (Japan), Pokémon Red and Blue (Western)

InPokémon Red and Blue, Nidoran♂ is traded for Nidoran♀; inPokémon Red and Green, Nidoran♀ is traded for Nidoran♂.

Debug test trade data

This data appears in all Generation 2 ROMs within a debug function intended to test out trading. Kabīn is possibly a reference to the Game FreakKōji Nishino andSnorlax (Japanese: カビゴン) in-jokes, and theearly 'Kabīn battle' concept art. The code remains in English versions; however, the Japanese names were not translated, resulting in garbage text, which causes problems as the game expects the English name length.

Generation IV

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

In the English language version ofPokémon Diamond and Pearl, Kazza, Charap, and Gaspar are functionallyJapanese in origin; in Pokémon Platinum and all other language versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, these Pokémon have the same language of origin as the game they were obtained in. While language of origin is normally not visible in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, being a different language of origin does still have functional effects, such as boosting theirexperience gained by 1.7× (instead of 1.5×) and being applicable for theMasuda method. If traded toPokémon Platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver, these Pokémon can registerJapanese Pokédex entries; in later generations, language of origin is explicitly displayed on the status screen.

Generation V

Unique to this generation, some of the Pokémon that are traded to the NPC can be battled again by that NPC. These are marked with a † icon. The gender and Ability traded is kept in the new battle, and in Black and White, the traded Pokémon evolves, but the moves may change, even ifHMs were taught to the Pokémon when traded. The new level is five levels above the initial level of the Pokémon traded to the NPC, with a minimum of 65 and a maximum of 100.

Except for trades with Yancy and Curtis, all traded Pokémon are guaranteed to have 1 perfect IV and all others set to 20.

Trivia

  • Prior toGeneration V, since thePokémon received in an in-game trade is the samelevel as the Pokémon traded for it, it issometimes possible to receive a Pokémon at alower level than normally possible.
  • InPokémon Red and Green andPokémon Red and Blue, four Pokémon are exclusive to in-game trades:Lickitung,Jynx,Farfetch'd, andMr. Mime.
    • InJapanese Pokémon Blue, Lickitung and Jynx were made available in the wild. InPokémon Yellow, Lickitung and Farfetch'd were made available in the wild as well. Therefore, Mr. Mime (in all languages) and Jynx (in languages other than Japanese) remained unavailable in the wild untilGeneration II.
    • Due to being exclusive to in-game trades, until the release of later games in which they could be obtained in the wild, they could only have their traded nicknames and the Original Trainer of "TRAINER".
  • InPokémon Red and Blue, theScientist at thePokémon Lab onCinnabar Island whotradesElectrode forRaichu claims that Raichu evolved, which is not possible. This is due to a context-ignorant translation of the JapanesePokémon Blue text, in which the player tradesKadabra forGraveler, both of whichevolve by trade
    • Similarly, the old man who trades the playerJynx forPoliwhirl inCerulean City claims that Poliwhirl "went and evolved". Poliwhirl does not evolve by trade in theGeneration I games but rather through the use of aWater Stone. In the context of the Japanese Pokémon Blue, the old man trades awayHaunter forMachoke, both of which evolve by trade.
  • InPokémon Crystal, once the player trades aHaunter for Chris'sXatu "Paul" inPewter City, Chris comments after the trade"Uh? What happened?", and then in later interactions"Trading is so odd... I still have a lot to learn about it." Although it is not explicitly said, Chris's surprise may suggest that Haunter evolved intoGengar. However, this dialogue does not change even if the player trades this Haunter holding anEverstone, which would normally prevent this Evolution.
    • InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can trade aHaunter for Mondo'sXatu "Paul" inPewter City. However, after the trade, Mondo says instead:"How wonderful! You made my day! Thanks to you, I have finally got the Pokémon I’ve been looking for... since forever!" It is not explicitly said if Haunter evolved into Gengar. As in the previous game, Mondo's dialogue does not change if Haunter is traded holding anEverstone.
  • InPokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Elyssa and Darrell's names do not traditionally match their genders. Since their names are switched inthe games' remakes, it is likely this was a mistake.
  • Pokémon received from in-game trades in theGeneration VI andVIII games havememories set. For example, inPokémon Sword and Shield, the Togepi the player can trade for has the memory "Snips hatched from an Egg and saw Holly for the first time in a castle".
  • Kapoor's name andArtist Trainer class are likely a reference to British artistAnish Kapoor. TheDuraludon he trades furthers this reference, since the real-life Kapoor has worked on numerous architectural projects.
  • InPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum, it is possible to become permanently trapped if the player trades away Finneon for Meister's Magikarp and has nothing else in their party that can learnSurf orFly, as well as noRare Candies to evolve Magikarp, orfishing rods toblack out or evolve Magikarp. This is only possible if the Finneon is traded from another game, since it is required for the player to have the Good Rod to catch it.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the onlycore series game to not feature in-game trades.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the only core series game to have an in-game trade that is required to complete the story.
