Ilima first appeared inTurning Heads and Training Hard!. In the past,Tupp, a to-be member ofTeam Skull, got annoyed with him when he began to draw groups of girls to him instead. Later in life, Ilima attended and graduated from thePokémon School, accomplishing a lot of milestone records; this earned him the nickname of "Pokémon School Prince". It was even rumored that he could makeSamson Oak'sKomala open its eyes, but this ultimately turned out to be false, much to the disappointment ofProfessor Kukui's class. After graduating, he went toKalos to study abroad and even participated in theKalos League.
In the present day, Ilima battledKagetora and won, earning him theEevium Z. He later returned to the Pokémon School to say hello to Professor Kukui and Samson Oak, and was introduced toAsh andLillie. After swimming with Ash andhis classmates, Ilima showed them hisZ-Ring and Eevium Z, and expressed his desire to get stronger with Eevee without needing toevolve it. Ash, finding something in common with Ilima, challenged him to abattle and he gladly accepted. Unfortunately, the twoTrainers were interrupted by a gang ofTeam Skull Grunts, led by a vengeful Tupp. Ilima and Eevee defeated all of the Grunts by themselves, using aLast Resort boosted byExtreme Evoboost to send them flying away.
InSmashing with Sketch!, Ilima taught Ash and his classmates how to play Pokémon Ping-Pong before participating in aPokémon Ping-Pong tournament himself. He eventually came face to face with another expert Pokémon Ping-Pong player,Ikari, in the finals. After an intense match, Ilima emerged victorious. Later that day, Ilima boarded a boat headed back to Kalos.
InLeague Offenders and Defenders!, Ilima returned to Alola to participate in theManalo Conference. Ash attempted to greet him, only to be knocked over by Ilima's fanbase.
InBattle Royal 151!, Ilima was among the 151 Trainers taking part in theBattle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference. Using Eevee, Ilima was able to defeat all of the Pokémon that Team Skull used against him before going up againstPlumeria and herSalazzle. Ilima was ultimately able to defeat Plumeria and was among the 16 Trainers still standing at the end of the round. The match-ups for the next round revealed that he would be battlingGuzma. Ilima was also revealed to be the favorite to win theAlola League.
InBattling Besties!, Ilima went up against Guzma, using hisKangaskhan to battle Guzma'sScizor. Despite IlimaMega Evolving Kangaskhan, Scizor was able to defeat its opponent through strategy, thus eliminating Ilima from the competition, much to the dismay of his fan girls.

InEnter the Champion!, Ilima attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when aGuzzlord arrived at the stadium through anUltra Wormhole.
Character
Ilima is polite and charming. He is also multi-talented in an array of sports and abattle strategist at heart. Despite having graduated from thePokémon School, Ilima's reputation precedes him and his many achievement awards still decoratePrincipal Oak's office. Girls' hearts are often sent aflutter by Ilima's arrival. However his pleasant nature can be grating for some, namelyTupp ofTeam Skull and Pokémon Ping Pong rivalIkari.
He believes in being empathetic to bring out the true strengths of his Pokémon. In particular, hisEevee, who he refuses toevolve against its wishes. After Eevee was injured byPlumeria'sSalazzle during theBattle Royal preliminary round of theManalo Conference, Ilima refused to let it battle until it was fully healed.
