Hypno (Japanese:スリーパーSleeper) is aPsychic-typePokémon introduced inGeneration I.

Itevolves fromDrowzee starting atlevel 26.

Biology

Hypno is a bipedal, slightly humanoidPokémon that has yellow skin. It has triangular ears with brown interiors, sleepy-looking eyes, and a large nose. On its neck, it has a ruff of white fur, which is longer on the female. Hypno has five fingers on each hand and holds a pendulum in its left. The pendulum resembles a flat, silver ring and is used for hypnotism. Hypno is never seen without it. It has three toes on each foot, which also have a pink pad on the undersides.

Hypno is able to put people to sleep by swinging its pendulum. It is known to reside away from humans and onless-traveled roads. While it awaits its prey, it polishes its pendulum. If anyone comes by, Hypno will hypnotize them and eat their dreams. It carries away people having good dreams and is even known to have stolen a child at one point. However, in theAlolaregion, it preys primarily onKomala, and cases of Hypno targeting humans are notably rare. Some Hypno are even known to assist doctors in hospitals when their patients cannot sleep at night. In theTrainers' School inPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a Hypno is shown to be capable of creating illusions, namely by disguising itself as a human and causing illusory children to appear. As shown inBattling Besties!, Hypno is left feeling completely despondent if its pendulum gets damaged in any way.

Hypno debuted alongside its pre-evolved counterpart inHypno's Naptime. The members ofHopHopHop Town'sPokémon Lover's Club were using the two of them to help them with their sleeping problems. However, the "Sleep Waves" from Hypno were also causing children to act like Pokémon and draining the energy of Pokémon in the localPokémon Center. Drowzee eventually managed to fix this problem.

InPlaying with Fire!,Harrison used a Hypno during hisSilver Conferencebattle againstAsh. It was able to defeatTotodile before losing toSnorlax.

Hypno was one of the first four Pokémon designs revealed when thePokémon 151 brand was first announced. The shirt design features an image of Hypno swinging its pendulum from the left side of the shirt.

• Hypno's Red, Blue, LeafGreen, and Scarlet Pokédex entries make reference to it using "PSI moves" (or "psi moves" in Scarlet), possibly indicating an early name for thePsychic type in English.
• Hypno's numbers in theAlola Pokédex inPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and thePaldea Pokédex are identical: 067 for the former, and 67 for the latter.
• Hypno are most likely commonly left handed due to always holding their pendulums in their left hand.
• Despite being heavily associated with the moveDream Eater, Hypno and its pre-Evolution,Drowzee, cannot learn the move by leveling up outside ofPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Hypno may be based on atapir,hypnotist, andbaku, or dream eater spirit, of Japanese mythology. It also looks similar to aproboscis monkey. Aspects of Hypno's behavior also resemble variousfairies,goblins,bogeymen, and other supernatural entities inEuropean folklore.
