Hyper Beam (Japanese:はかいこうせんDestruction Beam) is a damage-dealingNormal-typemove introduced inGeneration I.

It is:

Contents

Effect

Generation I

Hyper Beam inflicts damage. Arecharge turn is required on the turn after damage is done, during which no action may be performed.

Hyper Beam will not require a recharge turn if it misses, it breaks asubstitute, it knocks out the target, the user is targeted by abinding move (even if it misses), the userflinches, or the user is put tosleep after the attack but before the recharge turn. However, beingfrozen does not prevent the need for the recharge turn of Hyper Beam. If the user isconfused, the recharge turn of Hyper Beam will not count towards the number of turns the user will remain confused.

If one Pokémon attacks first with a binding move that misses in a round in which the other Pokémon must recharge from a use of Hyper Beam, the user of Hyper Beam will automatically use Hyper Beam again during that turn instead of recharging. If at such a time Hyper Beam has 0PP, Hyper Beam will still be used, and afterwardits PP will roll over to 63, and fullPP Ups will be applied to it.

An opponent can still use items on the user while it's recharging, in which case it will recharge the turn after.

InPokémon Stadium, Hyper Beam requires a recharge turn every time it is used.

Generation II

Hyper Beam will always need to recharge if it hits, regardless if it knocks the opponent or a substitute out, unless the battle is completed in that turn or the attack misses. The binding moveglitch has been fixed.

Generation III

If the user hasTruant, the recharge and "loafing around" take place on the same turn.

Hyper Beam is now affected by theKing's Rock.

Generation IV onwards

Hyper Beam is now special instead of physical, with a physical equivalent,Giga Impact added.

Generation VIII

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

InPokémon Legends: Arceus, Hyper Beam reduces the user's action speed instead of forcing it to recharge.

Mighty Tyranitar

Hyper Beam inMighty Tyranitar

In theAquapolise-Reader minigameMighty Tyranitar, Hyper Beam is used by Tyranitar to destroy incoming rocks being fired out from an erupting volcano. Unlike in the main games, Hyper Beam does not require charging and can be used consecutively.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Hyper Beam inflicts damage. If the move hits the target successfully, the user is inflicted with therecoil status condition for 1 turn (prior toGates to Infinity, this move inflicted thePaused status condition), preventing them from acting on the next turn.

InPokémon Super Mystery Dungeon andPokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, Hyper Beam will create a 3×3 explosion around the target (or wall), dealing damage to allies and enemies by an amount determined by the normal damage formula, and destroys walls and items caught in the blast. When used by aGigantic Pokémon, the move can reach enemies up to 10 tiles away in front of the user, and will pierce through enemies and walls (without breaking them), affecting all enemies within the 10 tile range.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Hyper Beam isDragonite's second move. It is obtained by evolving fromDragonair at level 7 and upgradingDragon Breath into it instead ofOutrage. The moves fires a beam of energy toward the targeted enemy after a delay, dealing damage to all enemies that it hits, as well as additional damage based on their Max HP. The move changes Stages based on the number of stacks of Dragon Dance that the user has, from 0 to 3. The max HP damage is 5%/10%/15%/20%, determined by the current Stage. The user cannot act while releasing the beam. At level 13, the user takes half the damage while charging this move.

Trivia

The Pokéquiz formatting error
  • Most Pokémon that can learn Giga Impact throughTM can learn Hyper Beam throughTM, and vice versa.
    • It and Giga Impact can be learned viaTM by many fully evolved Pokémon that can learn TMs, including Pokémon that were fully evolved at one point but later received one or more evolved forms, such asPorygon orSeadra.
  • InGeneration I, theDratini family were the only Pokémon not fully evolved or single stage that could learn Hyper Beam, though possibly due to an oversight could only get it by level up not TM.
  • OnKids' WB!, a Pokémon: Orange Island Adventures Pokéquiz segment aired duringPokémon Food Fight! incorrectly formatted Hyper Beam's name as "Hyperbeam."
  • In theBraziliandub of theanimated series, Hyper Beam has been given many names, such asHiper-farol,Hiper-fusão,Super-chama, andRaio Solar, the last one tending to cause much confusion because it is the Brazilian dub name ofSolar Beam.
  • In theDutch dub of the animated series, especially in the first few seasons, it's often incorrectly translated to "Hydro Straal", which translates to "Hydro Beam".
  • In theGeneration I games andPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is a quiz question inCinnabar Gym that asks ifTM28 containsTombstonerRBY orTombstonyFRLG. In the original Japanese versions, the move is calledしねしねこうせんShineshine Kōsen, which can translate into a silly expression such as "Die-Die Beam" or "Die! Beam", playing on Hyper Beam's Japanese name, はかいこうせんHakai Kōsen (Destruction Beam).
  • SinceGeneration VI, the move has the same sound effect as it originally did in Generations I andII.
  • InPokémon Masters EX, Hyper Beam was the first usable move to cost four move-gauge slots. It premiered on Lance & Dragonite on December 26, 2019.
