Hail (Japanese:あられHail) is a non-damagingIce-typemove introduced inGeneration III. It wasTM07 from Generation III toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, as well as inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It wasTM35 inPokémon Sword and Shield.
Effect
Generation III
When Hail is used, ahailstorm will begin on the field. This effect will last for 5 turns. This clears any other type ofweather.
While Hail is in effect, all Pokémon not of theIce type will be damaged for 1⁄16 of their maximum HP at the end of each turn.Synthesis,Morning Sun, andMoonlight will recover only ¼ of the user's maximum HP. Additionally,Castform and the moveWeather Ball become Ice-type.
Hail can be used as the first move of aPokémon Contest combination, causingBlizzard,Powder Snow, andWeather Ball to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn.
Generation IV to VIII
Blizzard will now hit during Hail regardless of target's evasion and user's accuracy. InDiamond and Pearl only, it can strike throughProtect andDetect with 30% accuracy.
Pokémon with theIce Body Ability recover 1⁄16 of their maximum HP each round. Pokémon with theSnow Cloak Ability increase their evasiveness by 20%. Pokémon with theSlush Rush Ability have their Speed doubled. If anIcy Rock is held by the Pokémon using Hail at the time of use, the duration of Hail will increase from 5 to 8 turns.
Ifheavy rain, extremely harsh sunlight, orstrong winds are present, Hail will fail.
Hail can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Blizzard,Glaciate,Icicle Crash,Icy Wind,Powder Snow andWeather Ball) to give extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.
If powered up by anIcium Z into Z-Hail, the user'sSpeed stat is raised by one stage.
Generation IX
Hail cannot be selected in a battle, and is instead functionally replaced by the moveSnowscape (creating asnowstorm).
