Additional effects
Ground-typePokémon are immune toThunder Wave, unless they are holding theRing Target, introduced inGeneration V. Ground-type Pokémon are also immune to damage from thesandstormweather condition, introduced inGeneration II, which also increases thepower of Ground-type moves by 30% if they have theAbilitySand Force.
FromGeneration II onwards, Ground-type moves cannot hit Pokémon under the effects ofMagnet Rise orTelekinesis, theAir Balloonitem, or the AbilitiesLevitate orEarth Eater, though all Pokémon except those withEarth Eater lose their immunity to Ground-type moves when they aregrounded (such as by holding anIron Ball or being under the effects of the movesIngrain (Generation IV onward),Gravity,Smack Down, orThousand Arrows). Ground-type moves will also affectFlying-type Pokémon when they lose their ungrounded status.

As ofGeneration IX, 79Pokémon are Ground-type (counting those that are Ground-type in at least one of theirforms, includingGalarian forms), which makes up 7.71% of all Pokémon, making it the 6th raresttype among Pokémon afterDragon and beforeRock.

- In the animated series, Ground-type Pokémon's immunity to Electric-type attacks is treated inconsistently, sometimes upheld and sometimes ignored.Pokémon the Series (in particularShowdown at Pewter City) also implies that Ground's immunity to Electric has a limit depending on the voltage, asBrock's Onix, when first fighting Pikachu, was completely unaffected by Pikachu's electricity, but in the rematch, Pikachu's electric attacks, having been boosted at an abandoned hydroelectric plant, were giving Onix a noticeable degree of pain, although it still was not enough to completely incapacitate it, as well as environmental factors (such as water being sprayed on it).
- InPokémon the Series on multiple occasions, like inShowdown in Pewter City,Sick Daze, andRight On, Rhydon!, Ground andRock-type Pokémon are said to have strong aversion to water and generally being wet.Rhydon is often presented as an exception to this rule due to its ability to use the moveSurf.
