Additional effects

Ground-typePokémon are immune toThunder Wave, unless they are holding theRing Target, introduced inGeneration V. Ground-type Pokémon are also immune to damage from thesandstormweather condition, introduced inGeneration II, which also increases thepower of Ground-type moves by 30% if they have theAbilitySand Force.

FromGeneration II onwards, Ground-type moves cannot hit Pokémon under the effects ofMagnet Rise orTelekinesis, theAir Balloonitem, or the AbilitiesLevitate orEarth Eater, though all Pokémon except those withEarth Eater lose their immunity to Ground-type moves when they aregrounded (such as by holding anIron Ball or being under the effects of the movesIngrain (Generation IV onward),Gravity,Smack Down, orThousand Arrows). Ground-type moves will also affectFlying-type Pokémon when they lose their ungrounded status.

Pokémon

As ofGeneration IX, 79Pokémon are Ground-type (counting those that are Ground-type in at least one of theirforms, includingGalarian forms), which makes up 7.71% of all Pokémon, making it the 6th raresttype among Pokémon afterDragon and beforeRock.

Main article:Fighting (TCG)

Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Ground-type Pokémon are generally listed asFighting-type Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Generation I introduced the most Ground-type Pokémon of any Generation, with 14, andGeneration VI introduced the fewest, with two.
  • Generations I, VI, andVIII introduced the most Ground-type moves of any Generation, with five each, while GenerationsIV andV introduced the fewest, with two each.
    • Generation IX is the only generation to not introduce a Ground-type move.
  • Generations VI and IX are the only Generations to not introduce a pure Ground-type Pokémon.
  • Despite being immune toElectric-type moves, Ground-type Pokémon can still becomeparalyzed, though this includes those holding aRing Target that can be afflicted byThunder Wave.
  • The Ground type has the highest ratio of super effective offensive matchups over resistances; with five weaknesses opposed to two resistances and one immunity.
  • The Ground type is tied with theFighting type for the most super effective matchups.
  • In the animated series, Ground-type Pokémon's immunity to Electric-type attacks is treated inconsistently, sometimes upheld and sometimes ignored.Pokémon the Series (in particularShowdown at Pewter City) also implies that Ground's immunity to Electric has a limit depending on the voltage, asBrock's Onix, when first fighting Pikachu, was completely unaffected by Pikachu's electricity, but in the rematch, Pikachu's electric attacks, having been boosted at an abandoned hydroelectric plant, were giving Onix a noticeable degree of pain, although it still was not enough to completely incapacitate it, as well as environmental factors (such as water being sprayed on it).
  • InPokémon the Series on multiple occasions, like inShowdown in Pewter City,Sick Daze, andRight On, Rhydon!, Ground andRock-type Pokémon are said to have strong aversion to water and generally being wet.Rhydon is often presented as an exception to this rule due to its ability to use the moveSurf.
  • Each type that resistsFlying is weak to Ground, and vice versa.
    • Each type that resistsFairy is also weak to Ground.
  • More Pokémon are immune to Ground-type moves than any other type, as Flying-type Pokémon and Pokémon with the AbilityLevitate andEarth Eater are immune to Ground-type moves.
  • The Ground type is the only type in theGeneration II games and their remakes that a notable Trainer does notspecialize in.
  • Out of all the types, the Ground type has the mostmoves ineligible forSky Battles, with 12.
  • The Ground and Flying types are tied with having the fewest notable type specialists, with only five each.
  • The Ground type has been paired up with every other type except for Fairy.
