Pokémon the Series
Pokémon the Series: XY
Grant debuted inBreaking Titles at the Chateau!, whereAsh andhis friends met him at theBattle Chateau. He was promoted to theGrand Duke rank after hisOnix won a battle againstViola'sSurskit. He was initially described as a "strong" Trainer, but he later revealed that he was actually theCyllage CityGym Leader, making Ash even more excited about his upcomingGymbattle with him.
InClimbing the Walls!, Grant accepted Ash's Gym challenge after the latter arrived at theCyllage Gym. Unlike most Gym Leaders, he allowed Ash to use his entire team (three Pokémon) against him while he would only be using two Pokémon. After some hard battles, Ash emerged victorious and Grant awarded him theCliff Badge, telling Ash that he would like to battle him at theBattle Chateau sometime.
He reappeared in a fantasy inA League of His Own!, when Ash was talking toEverett about the Gym Leaders that he had defeated inKalos for him to be able to compete in theLumiose Conference.
InA Towering Takeover!, Grant was seen in theKalos Canyon, watchingLysandre's broadcast fromLumiose City. InRocking Kalos Defenses! andForming a More Perfect Union!, Grant and Tyrunt were among those who helped destroy theGiant Rock.
He reappeared in a flashback inTill We Compete Again!.
Character
Grant cannot resist scaling walls, including the wall of the historicBattle Chateau, simply for the challenge that climbing offers. He has built theCyllage Gym with his rock-climbing hobby in mind, and readily challenges his opponents to scale the difficult rock walls up to the battlefield to test them. Grant believes that rock climbing offers a person, quite literally, a different perspective and access to a state ofenlightenment. He draws on his clarity of mind for strength and concentration during hisGym battles. He considers his team ofRock Pokémon to be what he refers to as a "wall", or a difficult challenge to overcome, using their incredible jumping abilities andRock Tomb to truly test his opponents.
Grant is good friends and has a rivalry withViola, theSantalune CityGym Leader.

Onix is Grant's first known Pokémon, which he used in a battle againstViola'sSurskit at theBattle Chateau. Despite Surskit creating its signature ice battlefield to aid its speed, Onix was able to turn the tables on the Pond Skater Pokémon by using its masterful control of Rock Tomb to trap it and Rock Polish to increase its speed, keeping Surskit on the defensive. Eventually, Onix ended the battle by using its powerful Flash Cannon to knock Surskit out. It was seen in flashbacks inA PokeVision of Things to Come! andComing Back into the Cold!.
Onix reappeared inClimbing the Walls! as the first Pokémon Grant used in his Gym battle againstAsh; it went up againstFroakie. Onix attempted to keep up with the Bubble Frog Pokémon, but Froakie's speed, in combination withDouble Team, confused Onix. This left it open to attacks, which eventually allowed Froakie to knock it out withWater Pulse.
Onix's known moves areRock Tomb,Flash Cannon,Rock Polish, andIron Tail.

Tyrunt was the second Pokémon used by Grant in his Gym Battle against Ash. Tyrunt, unlike Froakie, was quick, and while Froakie was able to dodge Rock Tomb, it was easily overpowered by Tyrunt's Draco Meteor. Tyrunt next went up againstFletchling and managed to knock it out easily (but not before taking damage from a supereffectiveSteel Wing).
Finally, Tyrunt went up againstPikachu, who was able to dodge Tyrunt's attacks and even used the projectiles from Draco Meteor for momentum before managing to wedge a rock in Tyrunt's mouth and finally knocking it out with a direct hit fromThunderbolt.
It appeared again inRocking Kalos Defenses! andForming a More Perfect Union!, where it helped destroy theGiant Rock.
It reappeared in a flashback inTill We Compete Again!.
Tyrunt's known moves areRock Tomb,Draco Meteor,Crunch, andDragon Tail.
