History

Pre-series

Goh at the age of six

Goh grew up inVermilion City in theKanto region with his parents,Camille andWalker, and grandmother,Halta. Sometime later, Goh metChloe and became his only friend growing up.

As seen inEnter Pikachu!, when he was six, Goh was invited by Chloe to go toProfessor Oak's Pokémon Summer Camp with her. During their visit toPallet Town, Goh and Chloe encountered theMythical PokémonMew. The two chased after the unknown Pokémon, but it eventually got away in the aftermath of a babyKangaskhan rescue. Professor Oak later told them the Pokémon they saw was most likely Mew. Motivated, Goh swore that he would become aPokémon Trainer when he turned ten, and one daycatch Mew.

As revealed inA Snow Day for Searching!, Goh was always alone during his childhood because his parents were often very busy at work. Because of that, he always ended up staying at home alone waiting for them. During that time, he was always distracted by his constant online researching sessions. Despite this, he was always proud of what his family did. One day, at home, Goh met a wildAbra as it came to visit him and once led him to the park where he met a lot of Pokémon that he didn't know that lived there.

Three years prior, during a family trip toAzalea Town, Goh befriendedHorace, who was looking for the Mythical PokémonCelebi. Goh offered to help with the search, but as night closed in, the boys promised to meet up again the next day. However, Horace didn't show up, leading Goh to feel betrayed.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

InLegend? Go! Friends? Go!, Goh witnessed aLugia appearing in the skies aboveVermilion City. He chased Lugia down and managed to latch onto its tail, where he met another Trainer namedAsh. Lugia allowed the boys to ride on its back as it soared through the skies and dived down into the ocean. Having bonded over the sights and the Pokémon they saw during the ride, Goh decided to accept Ash as his friend. After parting ways with Lugia, Goh and Ash returned to theCerise Laboratory, where they informed everyone about their encounter. Impressed by the information on Lugia that they brought back,Professor Cerise offered them a position as research fellows, which they accepted. Cerise later allowed Goh to pick from a set ofKanto first partner Pokémon for his debut as a Trainer, but Goh rejected all of them, stating he wanted his first Pokémon to be Mew.

InIvysaur's Mysterious Tower!, Goh and Ash received their first task as research fellows: to investigate a sudden outbreak ofIvysaur andBulbasaur in the city. To aid their mission, Cerise had twoRotom enter Goh and Ash's smartphones, upgrading each into aRotom Phone. After following the Seed Pokémon to aGym under construction, Goh and Ash were attacked byTeam Rocket, who planned to steal the Ivysaur and Bulbasaur. Despite the powerful Pokémon they received from theRocket Prize Master, Team Rocket was defeated byAsh's Pikachu and sent blasting off. Goh and Ash then discovered that the Ivysaur had gone to the Gym to find a high place for them to absorb the sunlight needed toevolve intoVenusaur. They watched as the Evolution process released pollen into the air, making flowers around the city bloom.

InSettling the Scorbunny!, Goh and Ash traveled to theGalarregion to research theDynamax phenomenon. While they waited for the train to theWild Area to arrive, Goh and Ash decided to eat some scones at a store inWyndon, only to have their food stolen by a wildScorbunny and itsNickit friends. After Ash battled and defeated Scorbunny, Goh bonded with it, even choosing to lie to the store owner by saying Scorbunny belonged to him when the Nickit stole more of his food. After hearing Scorbunny's backstory from the store owner, Goh gave it words of encouragement before he and Ash left. Goh and Ash eventually made it to their train, completely unaware that Scorbunny had taken a liking to Goh and started to follow him.

Goh with all theBug Pokémon he caught inWorking My Way Back to Mew!

InMind-Boggling Dynamax!, Goh and Ash made it to the Wild Area, where they encountered a largeSnorlax. Mistakenly assuming its size was due to Dynamax, Goh and Ash tried studying the Sleeping Pokémon, only for Scorbunny to appear and interrupt them. Scorbunny wished to join Goh's team, but it was turned down as Goh still wanted his first Pokémon to be Mew. Snorlax thenGigantamaxed, making its body so large that it covered a nearby train track, putting it at risk of being hit by an incoming train. By teaming up with Scorbunny, Goh managed to get Snorlax to move by luring it with aSitrus Berry. Praising its skill, Goh changed his mind about Mew and instead caught Scorbunny as his first Pokémon. After returning to the Cerise Laboratory, Goh introduced Scorbunny as his first-ever Pokémon to Professor Cerise.

InWorking My Way Back to Mew!, Goh became inspired to fill up hisPokédex by catching lots of Pokémon as part of his quest to obtain Mew. Together with Ash, Goh traveled to a nearby forest, where he caught one of eachBug-type native to Kanto. The next day, Professor Cerise introduced Goh to the Cerise Park, allowing Goh to store any Pokémon he caught on his journey.

Goh and Scorbunny in their first battle

InServing Up the Flute Cup!, Ash told Goh to come with him to theHoennBattle Frontier, where he entered them into theBattle Frontier Flute Cup tournament. Despite having the type advantage, Goh was defeated in the firstbattle byHodge without managing to land a single hit on his opponent. Frustrated by his loss, Goh decided that catching Pokémon was better than battling and ran off to continue filling up his Pokédex. He later returned in time to watch the final match between Ash and Hodge, which ended in Ash's victory. As they returned home, Goh apologized to Ash for his earlier outburst, having come to see battling in a new light through his observation of the final match.

InFlash of the Titans!, Goh and Ash watched theWorld Coronation Series atWyndon Stadium. They watched asLeon defeatedLance in the finals and subsequently earned the title of Monarch. Shortly afterwards, a GigantamaxDrednaw attacked the stadium. Inthe next episode, Goh and Ash battled Drednaw, but they were unable to harm it until Pikachu was accidentally exposed to Dynamax energy, causing him to Gigantamax as well. With guidance from Leon, Ash and Pikachu defeated Drednaw, reverting it back to its normal state. The next day, Goh watched as Ash had an unofficial battle with Leon that ended in the latter's victory. As they returned home, Ash revealed that he planned to enter the World Coronation Series and hopefully battle Leon again in the finals.

InKicking It from Here Into Tomorrow!, Scorbunny attempted to useEmber afterDarmanitan taunted it for being unable to useFire-type moves. Goh told Scorbunny not to bother as he felt its current moveset was good enough. During a battle with Team Rocket, Scorbunny tried to use Ember despite not having mastered the move, but this led to it being defeated by Team Rocket'sChewtle. When Goh criticized Scorbunny for trying too hard, it ran off to go train by itself. Later, after another clash with Team Rocket, Goh finally understood Scorbunny's passion and told it to kick a pebble with its heated-up feet. This allowed Scorbunny to master Ember, who proceeded to evolve into aRaboot before sending Team Rocket blasting off again. When asked to celebrate with a high-five, Raboot simply ignored Goh and walked away.

InGoodbye, Friend!, while inLittleroot Town, Raboot stopped a pair ofZigzagoon from stealing Ash's backpack. During their stay, Goh noticed that Raboot had been sneaking out at night, prompting him and Ash to follow it. They discovered that Raboot had befriended the Zigzagoon as well as aLombre and had been spending the nights giving them dance lessons. When Raboot struggled against aLoudred trio in a dance battle for territory, Goh, Ash, and Pikachu stepped in to provide a beat for Raboot and its friends to dance to, enabling them to win the battle. The next day, Goh decided to leave Raboot in Hoenn, believing it would be happier with its new friends than with him. When Ash asked if he told Raboot first, Goh quickly regretted his decision. To his relief, Raboot had followed them onto the train. Afterwards, Goh and Raboot settled their differences and reconciled.

InSobbing Sobble!, Goh encountered aSobble in Wyndon. He tried befriending the Water Lizard Pokémon, only for it to run away and hide by blending into its surroundings. Frustrated, Goh blindly threw aPoké Ball at the fountain Sobble was hiding in, accidentally catching it. Later, a failed attempt to catch aSilicobra led to Sobble running away. Goh and Ash eventually found Sobble captured by Team Rocket. After hearing Goh praise it despite its timid nature, Sobble broke free from its cage, only to be pinned down by one of Team Rocket's Pokémon, causing it to cry. Sobble's tears kept Team Rocket distracted long enough for Goh and Ash to send them blasting off.

Goh and his parents

InTime After Time!, Goh returned toIlex Forest during another family vacation toAzalea Town. His anger towards Horace was resolved when he found a letter from him at theIlex Forest shrine, which explained why he didn't show up, and then reunited with Horace as he was passing through.

InThat New Old Gang of Mine!, Goh and Ash arrived onMelemele Island in theAlola region. There, Goh met Ash's Alolan friends,Kiawe,Mallow,Lana, andSophocles. After being challenged by Kiawe to see if he was worthy of being Ash'srival, Goh denied this claim and stated he was Ash's friend and research fellow partner. The battle was called off after Goh's Raboot failed to stopKiawe's Turtonator'sInferno Overdrive. Despite Goh's loss, his refusal to back down even when attacked by a powerfulZ-Move impressed Kiawe, who asked Goh to take care of Ash. Afterward, everyone spent time on an island, where Goh caught anAlolanExeggutor.

Goh and his Dynamax Band

InSword and Shield: Slumbering Weald!, Goh and Ash were sent to Galar to investigate various incidents where Pokémon suddenly began Dynamaxing at random. Shortly after arriving, Goh and Ash chased a wildBunnelby into theSlumbering Weald, where they encounteredZamazenta andZacian. Their attempts to catch and battle the twoLegendary Pokémon ended in failure as they were merely illusions. After exiting the forest, Goh met withSonia again and headed with her to investigate the ruins inTurffield. Inthe following episode, Sonia took Goh to visit her grandmotherProfessor Magnolia to learn more about Dynamax. Goh later received aDynamax Band from Sonia, which was fashioned from aWishing Star they found outside. The next day, at theStow-on-Side mural, Goh and Sonia were approached byOleana's subordinate, who aimed to stop the duo's research. Goh Dynamaxed Raboot to battle Oleana's subordinate's GigantamaxGarbodor, but the clash broke the mural, revealing a statue of Zacian and Zamazenta underneath.

InSword and Shield: "From Here to Eternatus!", after defeating Oleana's subordinate, Goh and Sonia fled the area and drove off to the Slumbering Weald. They called out to Zacian and Zamazenta, asking for their help in stopping the Darkest Day. Zacian and Zamazenta's illusions led them to theRusted Sword andShield. Goh took the weapons and went with Sonia toHammerlocke to meet with Ash, but was stopped byOleana. Inthe following episode, Goh and Raboot defeated Oleana'sMilotic after Raboot evolved intoCinderace, learningPyro Ball in the process. Goh and Ash reunited on the top ofHammerlocke Stadium, where they witnessed Leon losing toEternatus, the true identity of the Darkest Day. The Rusted Shield and Sword summoned Zamazenta and Zacian, who aided Goh and Ash in battling Eternatus. Once it was weakened enough, Goh managed to catch Eternatus, who was later sealed away by Professor Magnolia to prevent its power from causing more harm to Galar. With he crisis over, Goh and Ash returned to the Slumbering Weald, where they returned the Rusted Shield and Sword and thanked Zamazenta and Zacian for their assistance.

InGetting More Than You Battled For!, Goh and Ash traveled toCero Island after Professor Cerise detected an energy signature similar to Mew coming from that location. They traversed the island and encounteredMewtwo, a powerful Legendary Pokémon cloned from Mew. When questioned on how catching all Pokémon species would lead him to Mew, Goh explained his belief that capturing Pokémon helps understand them, and that catching all Pokémon would help him understand Mew since it has the genes of all Pokémon species. Goh and Ash challenged Mewtwo to a battle, but were unable to defeat it despite their best efforts. Mewtwo commended Goh and Ash's dedication to their goals and parted ways with the boys, bidding them farewell with the promise that their journeys had only just begun. It then teleported them back to the Cerise Laboratory, allowing them to retain their memories of the encounter.

Goh and his Suicune

InHealing the Healer!, Goh and Ash went toJohto, where multiple sightings of aSuicune had been reported. When they found Suicune tied up by a group ofPokémon hunters, Goh used a Poké Ball to free Suicune from its bindings. To his shock, the Aurora Pokémon was actually captured, forcing Goh to go ahead and heal Suicune's injuries while Ash stayed behind to keep the hunters busy. While initially wary of the boy's kindness, Suicune began letting its guard down once it saw how much Goh wanted to help it. When Goh tried fighting the hunters' boss, Suicune stepped in to help and defeated the hunters. The hunters were arrested and Goh tried releasing Suicune, but it chose to stay with him. After being brought to Cerise Park, Suicune vanished and went back to roaming the world.

InWhen a House is Not a Home!, Goh found aGrookey asleep with him in his bed. Goh tried to catch Grookey, only to find out it already had a Trainer. The following day, Goh and Ash went to find Grookey's Trainer, but were shocked to learn it came from the Rocket Prize Master and belonged to Team Rocket. When Team Rocket arrived, they discovered Grookey was theirs and recalled it before escaping. The next day, Goh attempted to return Grookey's stick, which was left behind when Team Rocket fled. He was soon reunited with Grookey, who revealed it wished to stay with him. Jessie tried to forcibly recall Grookey again, only for Pikachu to knock the Poké Ball out of her hand and give Grookey the chance to break it. Jessie and Goh both attempted to capture the now-released Grookey, but Grookey batted away the Team Rocket-branded Poké Ball, allowing Goh's Poké Ball to catch it.

InAdvice to Goh!, Goh and Ash paid a visit to Professor Oak. Upon learning that Goh had registered Suicune in his Pokédex, Professor Oak suggested recommending Goh forProject Mew, a research team dedicated to the search for Mew. Goh rejected the offer, stating he would much rather work on his goal alone. When Ash was told that hisInfernape had gone missing for several days, he and Goh went to go find it. While on the search, Goh and Ash encounteredGary, Ash's childhood friend and formerrival. Gary revealed he was searching for the Legendary PokémonMoltres and suggested that Infernape left the lab for the same reason. At a nearby valley, Goh and the others found Infernape calling out to Moltres for a battle. When Moltres answered the call, Goh, Ash, and Gary worked together to battle it. Though they failed to defeat Moltres, Gary obtained one of its feathers, successfully completing a Trial Mission he received from Project Mew. Later, after parting ways with Gary, Goh revealed he changed his mind and decided to join Project Mew after all.

Goh with his fellow Project Mew Chasers Gary and Horace

InLeaping Toward the Dream!, Goh went toSinnoh to officially join Project Mew with Ash accompanying him. However, after meetingDanika andProfessor Amaranth, Goh was informed that he had to pass a qualified mission in order to start getting Trail Missions, as his mission was to catch anAlolanNinetales, who was wound up in Sinnoh when it got captured and was subsequently lost by Pokémon Hunters. Goh accepted the mission as he went toMount Coronet with Ash to find the Alolan Ninetales. Along the way, Goh and Ash met another member of Project Mew namedQuillon. Through the help of his Pokémon, Goh was able to catch the Alolan Ninetales and qualify to get Trial Missions for Project Mew.

Starting fromTrial on a Golden Scale!, Goh occasionally took on Project Mew Trial Missions. Initially, he preferred missions where he could act on his own, but eventually, he learned to cooperate in a team. The Trial Missions culminated inChasing to the Finish! with Goh's capture ofRegieleki, earning Goh enough Project Mew tokens to become a Chaser.

InJust a Scone's Throw From Here!, Goh received urgent summons from Project Mew and was forced to part ways with Ash just before theMasters Eight Tournament finals. Traveling to Hoenn, he reunited with the research team inA Flood of Torrential Gains! atSlateport City, from where they departed toFaraway Island. Through many difficulties, the Chasers managed to find Mew, with Goh getting a chance to express his gratitude for it having served as a motivation for him ever since their first encounter. Mew even briefly appeared on Goh's palm before the research team was forced to leave the island due to worsening weather conditions. Professor Amaranth announced that Project Mew was now temporarily disbanded, though he did offer Goh, Horace, and Gary a chance to return as Chasers for the next expedition.

After returning to Vermilion City inHeroes Unite!, Goh revealed to Chloe that he intended to start traveling alone without having to rely on Ash, but struggled to say this to Ash. During a camping trip among Ash, Goh, and Chloe, Ash also announced his decision to travel alone, upsetting Goh. Fortunately, they managed to make up just in time before Lugia suddenly appeared before them. After a briefRaid Battle against it, Ash and Goh rode on Lugia's back once more and reaffirmed their respective decisions to travel alone. As such, Goh chose to leave all of his Pokémon, save for Cinderace, Inteleon, and Grookey, at the Cerise Laboratory, and left the laboratory with Ash, parting ways with him soon after to explore the Kanto region. After meetingMisty at theCerulean Gym, he was seen in an unspecified town, continuing to catch new Pokémon.

Character

Goh looking at his smartphone

Goh is a stylish city boy who prefers to stay calm and collected, in contrast to the more instinctive and adventurousAsh. His overconfidence has left him isolated from other people, with the exception of his friendsChloe and Ash. According to Chloe, Goh has been known to skip school to wander around town, much to her chagrin. Despite his calm personality, he can become hot-blooded when his opinion is challenged, and he will not hesitate to defend others when he sees them being mistreated, which helped him bond with awildScorbunny inSettling the Scorbunny!. Goh likes to throw hisPoké Balls with acurve, but his aim tends to be off. Though he seems athletic, Goh lacks good climbing skills despite his efforts to get better at it. He is highly knowledgeable about Pokémon, being fairly adept at information-gathering and analyzing, both of which are useful in gathering clues. Despite his deep knowledge of Pokémon, Goh is still a rookie Trainer and lacks experience, best evidenced by his tendency to throw Poké Balls at any Pokémon he encounters, rather than weaken them through battle as is the usual practice. This usually backfires on Goh in the long run. For example, inA Test in Paradise!, he recklessly wasted all of the Poké Balls he was given to catch a singleDewgong, which resulted in him being unable to catch theDratini evolutionary line when he and Ash encountered them on Dragonite Island. His lack of expertise is also evidenced in his battles, where he shows a tactical, by-the-book approach of exploiting type advantages, but is unable to properly respond against more seasoned adversaries, which leads to a crushing defeat. Goh tends to yell "Go!" when sending out his Pokémon or throwing Poké Balls.

Goh's goal

Goh's encounter withMew when he was six inspired him to become aTrainer, and he initially wanted Mew to be hisfirst partner Pokémon, even going as far as rejectingProfessor Cerise's first partner Pokémon in favor of theMythical Pokémon. However, during his visit toGalar, a wild Scorbunny took a liking to Goh as it followed him and Ash to theWild Area. While Goh initially politely rejected Scorbunny, he soon changed his mind after working together with Scorbunny to solve a crisis involving aGigantamaxSnorlax and decided to make the Rabbit Pokémon as his first Pokémon partner instead. Goh and Scorbunny are alike as they both dislike losing their friends, especially one another. Goh and Scorbunny would high-five each other whenever something good happened.

Goh after catching a Pokémon

Due to spending most of his life doing research at home, Goh lacked interacting with people and Pokémon, as he didn't have a lot of social skills. As a child inNot Too Close for Comfort!, Goh used to be shy around people and wouldn't talk to them, and would sit out at night looking at the stars for comfort. When he was asked by his teacher as to why he wasn't interacting with the other kids, he wasn't able to answer her question because he didn't know why himself. Eventually, he learned to talk with people and was able to overcome his shyness. Goh also can get excited to see new places for the first time. Ever since the events inThe Spectral Express!, Goh developed a fear of ghosts andGhost-type Pokémon, except for those he and his friends own.

Goh with Ash and Chloe

Goh shares a very close friendship with Chloe due to him knowing her since they were little. At times, Goh brushes off Chloe's concerns for him but knows that she is just looking out for him. When he was little, Goh only wanted Chloe as his friend and nobody else. However, after meeting and getting to know Ash, Goh realized he needed to make friends besides Chloe and accepted him as one. Goh's friendship with Ash is very strong, though they sometimes get competitive and annoyed with each other and even butt heads. Ever since the events inIvysaur's Mysterious Tower!, Goh seems to strongly admire Ash for his determination, passion, and compassion for Pokémon, especially the extraordinary bond he shares with hisPikachu. Goh has occasionally taken inspiration from Ash, with the bond between Ash and Pikachu inspiring Goh to catchhis own inGotta Catch a What?!, as well as deciding to catch anAltaria inReuniting for the First Time! after watching Ash battle against one in theprevious episode.

Goh has changed significantly during his journey, particularly as a person and Trainer, but his knowledge and tendency to be overconfident have remained. Goh has also become open to new experiences and making new friends, especially those who used to travel with Ash. Goh has learned to put his Pokémon happiness and needs first before himself, and would help them solve or work out their problems. In addition, Goh has improved his battling skills, even using some of Ash's tactics for battling. However, despite his growth, Goh struggled with teamwork, as shown inAdvice to Goh!, when he declined to joinProject Mew because of this reason, but changed his mind whenGary motivated him to do so. This was shown again inBattling in the Freezing Raid!, when Goh's attempt to defeatArticuno in aRaid Battle on his own nearly caused him to fail theTrial Mission. As time passed, Goh learned about teamwork, to the point that he was willing to work together with others, as seen withHorace inNarrowing the Chaser Chase! and Gary inChasing to the Finish!.

Pokémon

Goh's currentparty

Because one of his goals is tocatch everyPokémon and complete hisPokédex, Goh catches a lot of Pokémon species, including multiple members of the sameevolutionary line and Pokémon that havebranched Evolutions, as well as Pokémon that haveform differences and aregional form. Currently, Goh is known to own 108 Pokémon, with 115 or 116[a] unique Pokémon species registered in his Pokédex. During his journey, Goh has encountered some Trainers with similar goals, such asShane Seeker, who seeks to capture allShiny Pokémon, andKricketina Kylie, aBug-type Pokémon collector.

InWorking My Way Back to Mew!, Goh managed to capture allGeneration I Bug-type Pokémon, which, according to Kricketina Kylie, makes him Kanto's "Bug Pokéking". During his research, Goh has access to several of his Pokémon, rotating between them. As ofThis Could be the Start of Something Big!, Goh decided to take a journey through theKanto region, leaving all of his Pokémon (with the exception of theGalar first partner Pokémon) at theCerise Laboratory.

In the games

Pokémon GO

Goh appears in an event based onPokémon Journeys: The Series from November 6, 2020 to November 12, 2020, as the character's clothes are available for the player's avatar. Just as during this period, an image of Goh appears during Photo Bomb, when this occurs aScyther appears to be captured. Other Pokémon based on Goh's captures during the series also appeared more in the wild, such asGolurk andCubone.[2]

Pokémon Ga-Olé

Goh appears as a character inPokémon Ga-Olé'sGrand Rush set 4 as part of a tie-in with the animated series. Goh replaced the Experienced Trainer that would normally appear in Golden Chance as well as Mister Trade who would normally appear in Trade Chance! He, along with Ash, also appeared as opponents in Trainer and Battle Mode, which was available to challenge from February 24, 2020. This was considerably earlier into the set's duration compared to other sets—thefourth Ultra Legend set, which also featured special opponents in Trainer and Battle Mode, shares this trait. The lineup included one new Trainer class in addition to Ash and Goh, who had theirhometown as part of their name instead of "Pokémon Trainer". Promotional disks could also be dispensed for an additional ¥100 following battles with Goh or Ash, with 'WINNER' versions available to players who successfully defeated their teams. Players facing Goh could receive aScorbunny disk.
