Gladion (Japanese:グラジオGlazio) is a recurring character inPokémon the Series. He isLillie's older brother andAsh's mainrival inPokémon the Series: Sun & Moon.

History

Pre-series

A young Gladion

Gladion is the son ofLusamine andMohn, and the older brother of Lillie. During his younger years, he lived with his family in their mansion inHau'oli City, even after his father's disappearance. At some point, he found an injuredEevee, who later became hisPokémon.

During a visit toAether Paradise, Gladion, while looking for Lillie, stumbled acrossFaba's experiment of opening anUltra Wormhole. He was frozen in fear when he witnessed Lillie getting attacked by aNihilego until she was rescued by aType: Null. As he was unable to do anything, Gladion vowed to get stronger and defeat everyUltra Beast to protect Lillie. Believing Lusamine to know about the incident and Type: Null's creation, Gladion distanced himself from his family and eventually embarked on ajourney, taking Type: Null with him because of Faba's mistreatment.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Though he did not appear inLillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge! in person, a younger Gladion was shown in aphoto along with Lusamine and Lillie.

He physically debuted inA Glaring Rivalry!, where he had abattle againstTupp,Zipp, andRapp, and quickly defeated their Pokémon withLycanroc'sStone Edge. Later, he and Lycanroc had a battle against aSailor'sBlastoise and won.Ash then asked him for a battle, but Gladion did not accept his offer until the next morning. During the battle, his Lycanroc facedAsh's Rockruff, but the battle was interrupted byTeam Rocket's latest scheme to steal Lycanroc andAsh's Pikachu.

After defeating Team Rocket with Lycanroc'sContinental CrushZ-Move, he told Ash that if he wanted to obtain theRockium Z, he would have to clearAkala'sgrand trial.

InRising from the Ruins!, after his Lycanroc heardRockruff's howls and left to find it, Gladion told it to return by nighttime. Later on, Gladion entered a cave and sent out hisType: Null, which he hadnicknamedSilvally. He then began comforting it, as Silvally felt troubled by its helmet, telling it that they couldn't go outside during the day when others would see it.

InA Dream Encounter!, Gladion was once again seen calming down Silvally. He suspected that it had detected something, which was the reason for its uneasiness.

InA Masked Warning!, Gladion encountered Ash atTen Carat Hill after the latter wasteleported there byNebby, which Gladion believed to be anUltra Beast. There, Gladion revealed that the reason Lillie became unable to touch Pokémon was due to her being attacked by the Ultra BeastNihilego. Later, Ash challenged Gladion to a battle using hisDusk Form Lycanroc against Silvally. The battle eventually ended with Gladion as the victor. Afterward, Gladion left while telling Ash to not tell anybody about Silvally.

InNight of a Thousand Poses!, Nebby teleported Lillie over to Gladion's location. Reacting to Nebby's presence, Silvally leaped in front of Lillie, causing her to remember the incident that led to her fear of touching Pokémon. When Nebby teleported Lillie back to her friends, she realized that she lost the ability to touch any Pokémon again, even the ones she had gotten used to.

InMission: Total Recall!, Gladion chastised Ash for letting Lillie see Silvally, holding him responsible for Nebby's actions. Angered, Gladion returned to his hotel room, only to findFaba waiting for him there. Faba attacked Gladion and put him to sleep in order to steal Silvally. Later, Gladion told Lusamine what Faba did and demanded that she tell him where Silvally was taken. Lusamine, completely unaware about the entire situation, helped Gladion search for Silvally in Faba's research room. As they searched, Gladion scolded his mother for failing to notice that Lillie's fear of touching Pokémon was caused by the Ultra Beasts that Lusamine was obsessed with meeting.

After finding Silvally'sPremier Ball, Gladion and Lusamine headed outside, where they found Faba attacking Lillie and Ash. In order to save Lillie, Silvallyevolved from Type: Null and defeated Faba's Pokémon. With Lillie freed, she reconciled with Lusamine for her neglectful parenting and apologized to Silvally, the Pokémon that saved her from a Nihilego years ago. This allowed Lillie to get over her past trauma and regain the ability to touch Pokémon.

Gladion and Silvally battling the Totem Kommo-o

InFaba's Revenge!, Lillie and Ash informed Gladion that Faba had kidnapped Nebby. The three traveled to Aether Paradise, where they informed Lusamine about the situation. They headed to Faba's location, only to find that he successfully forced Nebby to summon a Nihilego from anUltra Wormhole. The group tried to fight off Nihilego, but it proved to be too powerful and easily defeated their Pokémon. When Gladion tried to protect his family from the Ultra Beast, Lusamine pushed him out of the way and was captured instead. Nihilego then proceeded to drag Lusamine into the Ultra Wormhole.

InFamily Determination!, Gladion and Lillie decided to travel to theAltar of the Sunne in order to find a way to rescue Lusamine. After making their way through the island, they found themselves in a battle with a group ofJangmo-o andHakamo-o led by aTotemKommo-o. With Lillie's knowledge oftypes, Gladion gave Silvally aFairy Memory, allowing it to easily defeat Totem Kommo-o and allow the two to pass through. As they made their way to the altar, a piece of rubble began to fall on them, only to be destroyed by Pikachu'sElectro Ball. Ash andhis classmates revealed that they have decided to help Gladion and Lillie rescue Lusamine.

InRevealing the Stuff of Legend!, Gladion watched with the others as theguardian deities helped Nebby evolve into aSolgaleo. With Nebby's assistance, the group traveled into an Ultra Wormhole in order to find where Lusamine was taken to.

InRescuing the Unwilling!, Gladion and the others arrived atUltra Deep Sea, where they found that Lusamine had fused with Nihilego. Lusamine, reduced to a childlike state, claimed the Ultra Beasts as her own possessions and ran off in order to prevent the group from taking them away from her. As the group chased Lusamine down, more and more people were forced to stay behind in order to fight off Lusamine's Pokémon. Gladion was forced to stay behind in order to battle Lusamine'sAbsol.

In10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!, Gladion gave Silvally aFire Memory to break out of the ice after it was frozen by Absol'sIce Beam attack. He and Lycanroc then used Continental Crush on Absol. Although Absol appeared to have been defeated by this move, Nihilego made it get back up and continue battling. Gladion then rode Silvally to get to Lusamine. Later, they crossed the poisonous pool surrounding Lusamine and Nihilego, after Gladion gave Silvally aSteel Memory to make it immune to the poison. Gladion and Silvally distracted Nihilego, while Ash and Pikachu used the Z-Move10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt to weaken Nihilego long enough for Gladion and Lillie to free their mother from its hold. Lusamine's Pokémon were returned to normal as a result. Lusamine was then brought back to Alola through the Ultra Wormhole.

Gladion met up with Ash again inThe Professors' New Adventure! and informed him that he would be taking part in the island challenge. Before leaving, he explained that he couldn't just sit and be quiet after watching him and Pikachu use their new Z-Move.

Gladion in his Ultra Guardian uniform

InFilling the Light with Darkness!, Gladion attempted to calm Silvally down after it sensed the presence of another Ultra Beast. Noticing that Silvally appeared to be scared of the presence, Gladion realized that whatever it was, it must be powerful. Later, he traveled to the Altar of the Sunne, where he joined Lillie, Ash, and their classmates as a member of theUltra Guardians. There, Gladion, Ash,Kiawe, andLana combined theirZ-Power to fuel a device that dispersed the dark clouds covering Alola, uncovering an Ultra Wormhole in the process. Afterward, Lusamine took the Ultra Guardians into the ruins, where she showed them a mural depicting theBlinding One. Before any attempt to translate the mural could be done, the Ultra Guardians were forced to return outside, where they found the wormhole increasing in size. A moment later, aLunala emerged from the wormhole with aNecrozma chasing after it.

InFull Moon and Many Arms!, Lusamine's group came to the conclusion that Necrozma was the cause of the Alolan adults' loss of energy. Realizing that Necrozma intended on draining Lunala'sUltra Aura in order to possess it, Lusamine sent the Ultra Guardians off to protect Lunala. The Ultra Guardians chased Necrozma to Melemele Island, where they fought alongside Lunala to drive Necrozma away. Despite their best efforts, Necrozma easily shrugged off the Ultra Guardians' attacks and eventually took over Lunala's body to becomeDawn Wings Necrozma. Soon afterward, an eliteTeam Rocket group known as theMatori Matrix appeared and attempted to capture Necrozma, only for it to easily break free from their electrified net.

After theMatori Matrix retreated, Nebby appeared from a wormhole and fought alongside the Ultra Guardians to free Lunala. With itsSunsteel Strike, Nebby successfully knocked Necrozma off of Lunala, causing the former to fall into the ocean below. The Matori Matrix returned in order to capture Nebby and Lunala, though the two Legendary Pokémon were freed by Ash's Pikachu and Silvally. The distraction allowed Necrozma to return and possess Nebby instead, causing it to become Dusk Mane Necrozma. Ash tried to free Nebby but was unable to stop Necrozma from escaping into an Ultra Wormhole. With Necrozma gone, the adults of Alola were restored to their normal selves and the injured Lunala was taken to the Ultra Guardians base to recuperate. When the Ultra Guardians expressed their determination to rescue Nebby, theirZ-Rings began shining a light that went into Lunala, healing it in the process.

InThe Prism Between Light and Darkness!, the Ultra Guardians and Lunala traveled through an Ultra Wormhole and arrived atPoipole's homeworld. While Lunala went off ahead to face Necrozma, the others stayed behind and were introduced to Poipole's friends and the leader of its hive,Naganadel. With its telepathy, Naganadel revealed to everyone how Necrozma lost its light protecting the world from a meteor, causing everything to become barren and shrouded in darkness. Realizing that Necrozma is actually the Blinding One, the group wondered how to solve the crisis before the same thing happened to Alola. Gladion wanted to defeat Necrozma in order to save Nebby and Lunala, but he was immediately stopped by his teammates since they didn't want both sides to suffer. Ash and the others agreed to help Necrozma by giving it their Z-Power in the hopes that it would release Nebby, regain its true form, and bring light back to Poipole's world. After heading to where Lunala and Necrozma were fighting, Gladion, Ash, Kiawe, and Lana fired simultaneous Z-Moves at the Prism Pokémon.

Gladion and Ash teaming up with Lunala and Solgaleo

InSecuring the Future!, the combined Z-Moves were absorbed by Necrozma, but it wasn't enough to get it to release Nebby. After informing Lusamine's group of the situation, the Ultra Guardians learned that in the tale of Alola's creation, the people and Pokémon of Alola assisted Solgaleo and Lunala in restoring Necrozma's light by sharing their Z-Power with it. Together, the Ultra Guardians, their Pokémon, Lunala, Poipole's comrades, and everyone else back in Alola shared their Z-Power with Necrozma, causing it to release Nebby. The Z-Power still wasn't enough to satiate Necrozma, who continued attacking everyone and tried to capture Nebby again. After receiving aLunalium Z from Lunala, Gladion and Lunala performedMenacing Moonraze Maelstrom alongside Ash and Nebby, who usedSearing Sunraze Smash. The combined Z-Moves fully restored Necrozma's light, giving it the strength to become its true form, Ultra Necrozma, and restore Poipole's homeworld back to its original state. Afterward, the Ultra Guardians, Nebby, and Lunala traveled back to Alola through the Ultra Wormhole as Ash said farewell to Poipole, who chose to stay behind.

InShowdown on Poni Island!, Gladion and his Pokémon weretraining onPoni Island when he was reunited with Lillie. Gladion informed Lillie about his plan to battleTapu Fini in order to complete Poni Island's grand trial. They discussed their father and how he passed away researching Ultra Wormholes. They went on to battle each other, but were interrupted by the arrival of Ash, who was being chased byHapu and herMudsdale. Gladion then had a battle against Ash, using his Lycanroc against Ash's own, and the match ended in his victory.

InMemories in the Mist!, Gladion was training with his Pokémon again until a mist covered the area. After meeting up with Lillie, they realized the mist was Tapu Fini's doing and decided to use it as an opportunity to meet with Mohn. Despite wandering around searching for their father, Mohn never appeared in front of them. After learning from Hapu that this could indicate he is still alive, they decided to tell Lusamine about it.

InChasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, Gladion battled Hapu and won, completing his final grand trial. Later, he explored Melemele Island withUmbreon in order to search for his father'sZoroark, which went missing after Mohn's disappearance into an Ultra Wormhole. That evening, Gladion was approached by Zoroark, who he asked to join in his quest to find Mohn. Zoroark accepted Gladion's request and became a member of his team.

InLeague Offenders and Defenders!, Gladion was seen battling three Team Skull Grunts who were causing trouble at theManalo Stadium, easily defeating theirHoundour,Ekans, andAlolanRaticate with his Lycanroc. Gladion later met up with Ash, Lillie, and the rest of their classmates.

Gladion and Ash

InBattle Royal 151!, Gladion was among the 151 Trainers taking part in theBattle Royal preliminary round of theManalo Conference. Using Silvally, Gladion was among the 16 Trainers still standing at the end of the round. The match-ups for the next round revealed that he would be battling Lillie.

InThe Battlefield of Truth and Love!, Gladion and Lillie faced each other in the first round of the Manalo Conference.Snowy was able to defend itself against Umbreon with itsSnow Cloak and lessen the damage of aShadow Ball due toAurora Veil, as well as land aSubzero Slammer. Despite this, Gladion was eventually the one to emerge victorious against his sister, moving him on to the second round, where he was later revealed to have been matched up againstJames.

InImitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Gladion had his battle against James, using Lycanroc to battle hisMareanie. After counteringBlack Hole Eclipse with Continental Crush, Lycanroc easily defeated Mareanie, advancing Gladion to the third round. The match-ups later revealed that Gladion would be battling Kiawe.

InThe Final Four!, Gladion came acrossMimo, who was being menaced by Tupp, Zipp, and Rapp. He sent out Silvally to save Mimo and then walked her back to Kiawe. During the walk, Mimo's personality got him thinking about Lillie. Later, Gladion commenced his battle against Kiawe, where his Lycanroc battled and defeated hisKiawe's Marowak before losing toTurtonator. Now down to one Pokémon, Gladion sent out Silvally. The battle continued in thenext episode, where Gladion threw Silvally aFire Memory to minimize the damage fromInferno Overdrive before defeating Turtonator, advancing Gladion to the final round.

Gladion later watched the battle between Ash andGuzma, which continued in thenext episode. He witnessed Ash's victory and knew he would be facing off against him. Gladion was later seen with his Pokémon, getting ready for the match.

Gladion and Ash facing each other in the Manalo Conference finals

InFinal Rivals!, Gladion was training with his Pokémon the night before the final match when Lillie and Lusamine approached him and suggested that he get some rest. However, he declined and told them that he wanted to be prepared for the battle. This prompted Lusamine to compare him to Mohn, mentioning that his father frequently became consumed with preparing for battles, even on their wedding day. Gladion's battle against Ash began the next day, with Gladion sending out Silvally to battle Ash's newly evolvedMelmetal. After Silvally withstood a few hits, Gladion threw aFighting Memory, allowing Silvally to turn into aFighting type, which allowed it to defeat Melmetal. Ash then sent out Pikachu and managed to defeat Silvally. Gladion next sent out Zoroark, much to Lusamine's shock.

The battle continued inEnter the Champion!, where Gladion and Zoroark usedNever-Ending Nightmare. Ash and Pikachu countered withBreakneck Blitz, which resulted in Zoroark and Pikachu getting knocked out at the same time. Then, Ash and Gladion sent out their respective Lycanroc. Gladion's Lycanroc was eventually defeated, losing Gladion the match. Later, he attended Ash's award ceremony, only for it to be interrupted when aGuzzlord arrived at the stadium through a wormhole.

InZ-Move Showdown!, Gladion helped evacuate innocent civilians to safety. When a second,ShinyGuzzlord appeared in the shopping area, Gladion, Kiawe, andHau teamed up to fight it. Their efforts nearly failed until Lillie,Sophocles,Lana, andMallow came to assist them. By combining their Z-Moves into one giant attack, Gladion and the others managed to successfully knock the Shiny Guzzlord back into Ultra Space. Gladion then watched theexhibition match between Ash andProfessor Kukui fromExhibition Unmasked! toFrom Z to Shining Z!.

InDreams of the Sun and Moon!, Gladion was called to their mansion by Lillie, who wanted his Zoroark to meetMagearna in the hopes of awakening the latter. When Zoroark identified the room and Magearna, it created anillusion, showing Gladion and Lillie a flashback of Mohn, Magearna, and an infant Lillie. An emotional Lillie triggered Magearna to finally reactivate. It was revealed inthe following episode that Magearna'sSoul-Heart directed towards Mohn's location, prompting Gladion, Lillie, and Lusamine to leave on a journey to find him. Before leavingAlola, Gladion said goodbye to Ash and promised to have a battle with him again someday.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Gladion and his family

Gladion appeared in a flashback inThat New Old Gang of Mine! while Lana read a letter from Lillie, explaining how both were still searching for Mohn.

InThe Homecoming Crown!, Gladion and his family arrived at theCrown Tundra in theGalar region to find Mohn. After camping out during a blizzard for the night, they reunited with Mohn at a cabin. However, they found out that Mohn had amnesia and failed to remember them. They also discovered that aShinyNihilego, nicknamed "Lillie", had been living with Mohn, with him believing that the Ultra Beast was his daughter. While Lusamine talked with Mohn, Lillie and Gladion decided to look around the cabin for clues, which led them to finding their father's old clothes and a mirror in a room. Through the aid of Ash,Goh, andChloe, Lillie and Gladion were able to snap Mohn out of his amnesia by making him see his reflection in the mirror, and the reunited family embraced each other. Seeing that Nihilego was leaving, Lillie stopped the Parasite Pokémon before it disappeared, as she and her family were grateful for everything it did for Mohn and invited it to come back to Alola with them, which it happily accepted. Gladion joined his family to capture Nihilego in aBeast Ball before joining in on a group photo of the reunited family.

InHelping the Hometown Hero!, Gladion's family, Ash, Goh, and Chloe arrived in Alola, attending a party to celebrate their return. During the party, Gladion reunited with most of his friends, but decided to leave soon after in order to train. The next day, Gladion participated in a Battle Royal between Ash, Kiawe, and Professor Kukui. However, despite his best effort, Gladion was defeated.

InParing Pokémon While Parrying! andPartners in Time!, Gladion was seen watching Ash'sMasters Eight Tournament match againstLeon at thePokémon School.

Character

Gladion is usually quiet, reserved, and serious. Due to the event that traumatizedLillie in the past, Gladion nurtured a resentfulness of theUltra Beasts and began his journey as aPokémon Trainer to be able to defeat every one of them. As seen inhis debut, this event also made him grow distant from his sister, as he still blamed himself for Lillie's inability to touch Pokémon. As a result, Gladion had a considerably more difficult time opening up to Ultra Beasts that were, in fact, peaceful, a trait first seen inA Masked Warning!, when he immediately grew defensive after learning aboutNebby's nature. He also had a similar reaction toAsh's Poipole inFilling the Light with Darkness! and even orderedZoroark to attackLillie, theShinyNihilego his father had been living with, inThe Homecoming Crown!.

Gladion's team inPokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Despite his usual cold exterior, Gladion has a more temperamental side to him. For example, inMission: Total Recall!, he did not hesitate in scolding Ash for causing Lillie's fear of Pokémon to resurface due to his negligence with Nebby. He also is somewhat of an impatient person, as seen inRevealing the Stuff of Legend!, when he demanded theguardian deities to hurry up as they waited to savehis mother.

Nonetheless, he is a strong Trainer, able to advance with ease through the bracket of the firstAlola LeagueManalo Conference. He quickly recognized Ash's potential as a Trainer, and after defeatingAsh's Lycanroc inA Masked Warning!, thanked Ash for givingSilvally an opportunity to train. He was also motivated to take the island challenge after seeing Ash andPikachu perform10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt.

As shown inShowdown on Poni Island!, Gladion has enough faith in his Pokémon to let them battle each other to train, without giving them any kind of command. He also becomes happy whenever his Pokémon do well, as shown when he congratulated Lycanroc with a fist-bump upon their victory against Ash. When battling with Silvally, Gladion makes good use of itsRKS System to keep it at an advantage. Gladion and his Pokémon began adapting more of Ash's unconventional strategies after Gladion acknowledged him as hisrival. InImitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Gladion and Lycanroc counteredJames andMareanie'sBlack Hole Eclipse using the same strategy Ash and his Lycanroc used in their grand trial againstNanu, despite not having been there to see it. As shown in theEnter the Champion!, Gladion and Lycanroc were also able to devise a counter to theconfusion caused byOutrage.
