Gilbert went up againstAsh during the preliminary rounds. Using hisHitmonlee, he was determined to defeatAsh's Pikachu. However,Pikachu's speed caused his Pokémon'sHigh Jump Kicks to miss andinjure his leg. He was able to gain a slight advantage when Hitmonlee usedMega Kick on Pikachu, but theFighting-type Pokémon ended up losing thebattle. With that loss, Gilbert was out of the tournament.

Gilbert'sHitmonlee appearedSaved by the Beldum where he was used in the preliminary round againstAsh andPikachu in theEver Grande Conference. Hitmonlee began with a Rolling Kick while Pikachu countered withIron Tail. Hitmonlee subsequently attacked with High Jump Kick, but Pikachu dodged it, causing Hitmonlee todamage his knee on the stadium wall. Hitmonlee closed in on Pikachu with a Mega Kick, but before it hit, Pikachu finished him off with another Iron Tail.
