History

Pre-series

Friede prior to forming the Rising Volt Tacklers

Friede grew up somewhere in theKantoregion with his childhood friendOrla and hadCharizard as hisfirst Pokémon. After Orla moved toSlateport City in theHoenn region, Friede finished growing up in Kanto and was taught byLucca. He came to know theelder on anisland in Kanto as he looked after him. Also, Friede metLudlow and came to see him as a mentor. Friede eventually became aPokémon Professor, after quitting his job atExceed because he didn't want to be cooped up in a lab and lost the passion for researching, and began to live the carefree life with Ludlow on hisfishing boat.

As revealed inFlying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, Friede was in thePaldea region with Ludlow when Lucca introduced him to aFlying Pikachu, reigniting his passion for research. Friede eventually managed to convince Pikachu to become partners with him and traveled to Hoenn, where he had Orla convert Ludlow's fishing boat into an airship, which Friede named theBrave Olivine. Once the job was done, Orla and Ludlow joined Friede as the founding members of theRising Volt Tacklers, withPikachu serving as the airship's figurehead captain.

Later, Friede metMurdock,Wy-Yes, andMollie as they joined the Rising Volt Tacklers. Sometime after Wy-Yes left to become a journalist, Friede met Murdock's niece,Dot, as he asked her for help in making an app for the team, which she accepted and joined the team. One day, Friede was contacted by Lucca as she asked him to bring her daughterLiko, who was attendingIndigo Academy in Kanto, to Paldea and protect her during the journey there.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Friede's rivalry with Amethio

Friede debuted inThe Pendant That Starts It All (Part One). He was first seen coming to Liko's rescue on his Charizard's back after she was confronted byAmethio. His Charizard went up againstAmethio's Ceruledge, but the confrontation ended abruptly after they witnessed the power Liko's mysterious pendant held. After rescuing her andSprigatito from falling inthe next episode, Friede flew her back to theBrave Olivine and introduced them to the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers. TheExplorers soon attacked the ship, and Friede challenged Amethio to a battle, this time usingCaptain Pikachu against Amethio's Ceruledge, only for the battle to be cut short by Liko. After Liko's Sprigatito unleashed aLeafage strong enough to break the barrier around the battlefield, Friede and Liko watched powerlessly as the Explorers fled, kidnapping Sprigatito in the process.

InFor Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!, Friede and some of the Rising Volt Tacklers got together to search for Liko's Sprigatito. WhenMurdock'sRockruff foundOnia shopping, Friede and Liko chased her back to a warehouse. There, he clashed against Amethio once again; this time, however, as a distraction to allow for Liko and Rockruff to be able to track down Sprigatito. After they found her, Friede and Liko made their escape. At the end of the day, Friede confirmed that Liko's mother asked the group to protect Liko and they decide to team up to uncover the mysteries surrounding Liko's pendant.

InThe Treasure After the Storm!, Friede spotted a familiar island off the coast of Kanto and docked the Brave Olivine for maintenance to be done on the airship. In order to gather materials, he sought the alder, but left empty-handed. In thenextepisodes, Friede confronted Amethio once again on the island's shore. He managed to stall the Explorers's admin with Charizard, but got distracted for a moment, allowing his opponent to launch an assault on Liko, whose pendant activated at the right time to protect her. As the battle went on, Liko's pendant and Roy'sAncient Poké Ball reacted to each other's presence, which resulted in aBlack Rayquaza being released from the Poké Ball and quickly forcing the Explorers to retreat with aDraco Meteor.

InSpecial Training with Cap!, Friede set up a special training session for Liko and Roy after being moved by their determination to get stronger. For the newly-recruited Rising Volt Tacklers to win, they only needed to land a single hit on his Pikachu, which proved to be much more difficult than it initially seemed due to hisDouble Team. After a break, he encouraged them both to battle against each other in order to see how much they've grown after the training.

Friede and Lucca

InThe Future I Choose, after finding out there was a communication issue around their area, Friede went out with his Pikachu and Charizard and he soon found aMagneton using its magnetic field. Friede scared it away with his Pikachu, after that he was able to get a call from Liko, asking him if he could get water for theBerries that they planted, so he broughtLudlow with him to use hisQuagsire'sRain Dance. Friede later went to theArtazon's library to find information about the Ancient Poké Ball. Coincidentally, he met his former homeroom teacher[2]Lucca, whoseSquawkabilly gave him a hint that Liko's grandmotherDiana was currently inGalar.

InFly! Wattrel!!, Friede dispersed a group of Magneton disturbing the connection around the Brave Olivine. Fending them off, he restored the connection and left to pursue one of the Magneton. However, this ended up being a lure into an ambush bySpinel, who remotely ordered his Pokémon to attack Friede's Charizard. Driven into a corner, Friede was forced to reveal hisTera Orb,Terastallizing his Charizard and turning the odds enough to force Spinel's Pokémon to retreat.

InCharge! Galar Mine!, Friede arrived with Liko and Roy to theGalar Mine to look for the Black Rayquaza, but got separated from them. While looking for Liko and Roy, Friede encountered the Explores and battled Amethio again. During the battle, aGalarianMoltres that had an Ancient Poké Ball appeared. However, when Captain Pikachu got injured during the battle, Friede stayed to battle the Explores while Liko and Roy left with his partner in order for him to recover. In thenext episode, Friede met up with Captain Pikachu, Liko, and Roy atMotostoke'sPokémon Center. After his Charizard recovered from his injures, Friede and the group decided to go back to battle Moltres again in order to calm it down. They succeeded and Moltres returned to its Ancient Poké Ball.

InReunion at the Ancient Castle!, Friede, Liko, and Roy arrived atHammerlocke in order to find ancastle thatDiana, Liko's grandmother, was at. Through herSquawkabilly, Friede and his friends were able to find her. They hung out at the castle until the Explorers, who have been following them, arrived at their location. In thenext episode, as Diana stalled the enemy group, Friede took Liko and Roy through the castle's underground passage and instructed them to stay at a safe place while he climbed up the tower and tried estabilishing contact with the Brave Olivine. Soon, he was confronted by Amethio once more, and another battle of Charizard versus Ceruledge ensued. Despite initially attacking more carefully and from a distance this time, Amethio tricked them into activating Ceruledge's Weak Armor, which increased its speed again and allowed it to land a flurry ofNight Slashes. Seemingly overwhelmed and about to be hit by a finishingPsycho Cut, Friede Terastallized Charizard into a Dark type, rendering the opposing attack useless, and finished off the battle by defeating Ceruledge with a supereffectiveTera Blast. AfterCoral set off herGlalie'sSelf-Destruct, Friede and his Pokémon managed to barely escape the explosion and reunited with the Rising Volt Tacklers.

Friede and Amethio joining forces to battle Black Rayquaza

InThe Wild Pair, Friede and Cap!, Friede took a job assignment from his friendShine, in order to raise money for supplies, with Liko and Roy accompany him. Their task was to find hisBramblin, which blew away from him, and they were informed that a group ofPokémon hunters were operating near the area. Although they were able to find Bramblin a few times, Friede and his friends failed to keep at one place, which led the Tumbleweed Pokémon getting captured by the Pokémon Hunters. Fortunately, Friede and his friends efforts helped save Bramblin, as itevolved intoBrambleghast, and defeated the Pokémon Hunters. After brining Brambleghast back to Shine and bringing in the Pokémon Hunters into the authorities, Friede was able to get paid, which will help the Rising Volt Tacklers get supplies for their return journey to Paldea.

InThe Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Friede, Liko, Roy, andLudlow went to an island to check out a suspicious watchtower, after theyhad just learned the Explorers were planning to summon and capture the Black Rayquaza. Friede went in first, only to realize it was a trap set by Spinel in order to keep him at bay while the plan rolled out somewhere else. Due to the small space, he sent out Captain Pikachu against his opponent'sUmbreon. Despite initially struggling due to Umbreon'sFoul Play andReflect countering Pikachu's physical attacks, they managed to escape after craftily forming a plan to use said moves in their favor. Friede arrived at the correct place in thefollowing episode, only to witness as Rayquaza was sent crashing into the Brave Olivine after a Self-Destruct from Coral's Glalie. Once the Explorers retreated, Friede joined Liko, Roy, and Dot in battling Rayquaza. Amethio soon joined the fray and teamed up with Friede, with them Terastallizing Ceruledge and Charizard, respectively, but were eventually defeated by a devastatingDragon Ascent.

Friede investigating the Treasure of Eternity withYanga

While Liko, Roy, and Dot were undergoingNaranja Academy'sTera Training course, Friede followed a hunch back to his old workplace,Exceed. InThe Treasure of Eternity, he asked the company's director and his former boss,Cervantis, about the "Treasure of Eternity", suspecting a connection to Terapagos, but the man was unable to give him satisfying answers. Upon reuniting with his old colleagueYanga and discovering that his access to the database had been blocked as he tried to look for the Treasure of Eternity, Friede decided to check on the vault where the mineral was being kept. He managed to barely sneak in, only to find an empty vault labeled "Laquium", and quickly made his escape. InLiko and Amethio, Friede learned from Liko's first-hand experience about the actual power of Laquium and relayed the little information he had to the children.

Before leaving Naranja Academy, following the conclusion of their Tera Training, the children had been informed byRaifort aboutBriar, a Terapagos researcher currently stationed in the land ofKitakami, so the Rising Volt Tacklers decided to head there next. They arrived in Kitakami inRoy is Crocalor, and Crocalor is Roy! and participated in theCountryside Harvest Festival while gathering information. While there,Carmine'sSinistcha caught Friede's attention, which led to her constantly challenging him through the night, including to a battle, which ended in Friede's victory. Later, Carmine told the Rising Volt Tacklers that Briar was at theCrystal Pool. Over the next days, Friede accompanied Liko, Roy, and Dot as they travelled to the Crystal Pool inTinkatink's Hammer Wasn't Made in a Day, met Briar inEncounters at the Crystal Pool, searched aroundTengu Mountain forLucius's Kleavor inThe Search for Kleavor! andKleavor the Solitary Warrior, and learned about the original Explorers through Diana andRystal inThe Three Explorers andThe Wonders of this World!.

After following leads fromWy-Yes andSiskel, Friede and the young Rising Volt Tacklers found what was presumed to be Lucius'sEntei inEntei's Fierce Battle Cry!, in an archipelago off theOlivine City coast. Although they failed to defeat it, Entei still recognized their strength, but was revealed to be a wild Pokémon unrelated to the Six Heroes. Their continued search for Lucius's Entei led them to Paldea'sPokémon League building inOver the Top!, after Briar notified them about recent sightings of an Entei inArea Zero. While Friede was easily granted permission to enter, the children had to prove themselves in battle againstGeeta first. Then, they searched around Area Zero for Entei until it decided to appear before them inThe Pillar of Fire, revealing itself to actually be aGouging Fire. Much like in the battle against Entei, Friede teamed up with Liko, Roy, and Dot to face off against Gouging Fire and, in thefollowing episode, the Black Rayquaza.

With the Six Heroes gathered, the Rising Volt Tacklers headed towards Laqua, guided by Rayquaza. Friede and the young members finally arrived there inThe Pokémon Paradise of Laqua! and were ambushed by the Explorers, who were following them for a while. InThe Rising Volt Tacklers vs. The Explorers!, Friede had aDouble Battle against Spinel, whose tricky strategy of swappingAbilities managed to throw off him for a while before he outsmarted him with pure intuition. Despite his victory, Captain Pikachu and Charizard were left exhausted, which allowed for the Laquium mist to affect them infollowing episode, forcing Friede to recall them and only watch from the sidelines as Liko, Roy, and Dot, later joined by Amethio, fought againstGibeon'sWhite Zygarde.

Friede andCharizard disappearing to parts unknown

InWhere the Adventure Leads, after Pagogo, in itsStellar Form, purified Laqua with the help of the Six Heroes, Lucius and Gibeon faded away. Though the situation seemed over, Spinel used some Laquium mist he had stored on the Six Heroes, causing them to go berserk, except for Rayquaza. The rampaging heroes began attacking both friend and foe, causing the earth below everyone to become unstable and collapse. Urged to flee by Rayquaza, Friede aided the children in escaping, but they got caught in a heavy gust of wind as they attempted to board the Brave Olivine. At the last moment, Friede managed to get Captain Pikachu onto the ship before he and Charizard were blown off, as they are sent tumbling back towards Laqua, leaving their status unknown.

The Rising Volt Tacklers searched for Friede before the area around Laqua got closed off by the Explorers, but did not manage to find him. His fate after this incident was only revealed inHZ122, after he and his crew reunited, a year later. According to him, Charizard managed to save him from the fall, and, while in the air, he came to the realization that Laqua resembled the crater of a meteor crash. Friede collected some samples from the soil and then traveled all the way toHoenn'sDevon Corporation to meet withSteven Stone and confirm his suspicions. Following this, he headed toMossdeep City'sSpace Center in order to go to space and learn about the extraterrestrial origin of Laquium first-hand. During his training period, he befriended and caught aStarmie, which he nicknamed Instructor Starmie, obtained aMega Ring, and became a user ofMega Evolution with Charizard and Starmie. Before he left the planet, Friede sent a message to the Rising Volt Tacklers' app, but since the group was disbanded, the message wasn't found untilWe Are the Rising Volt Tacklers!, a month after it was sent, confirming to them that he and Charizard had managed to survive the fall, but were hiding somewhere due to heavy surveillance by the Explorers.

The Rising Volt Tacklers reunited

InHZ121, Friede suddenly contacted the Rising Volt Tacklers, informing he was on his way back from space. His returning trip, however, did not go according to plan, with the returning module going off-trajectory and the built-in parachutes failing to work. The Rising Volt Tacklers at the Brave Olivine acted quickly, predicting the exact location of his fall and slowing the module down withmoves from all Pokémon, but this inadvertently pushed it away from the airship. At this moment, Captain Pikachu rushed in and, due to Pagogo'sTerastal energy, Terastallized into aFlyingtype, allowing him to catch the module and bring it back. Friede reunited with Captain Pikachu and his friends. He also introduces Instructor Starmie to everyone.

InHZ122, Friede learned about the Rising Volt Tacklers' temporary disbandment, metUlt for the first time, and got caught up in the new developments regarding Laquium and Pagogo. Then, Friede challenged Roy to a battle in order to test his resolve as the new founder of the Rising Volt Tacklers, claiming that, if Roy lost, the group would be disbanded. After both sides Terastallized,Roy's Skeledirge managed to win over his Charizard, which officially made Roy the leader of Rising Volt Tacklers. As night fell, Friede told his teammates he needed to travel to Hoenn, in order to pass by Mossdeep Space Center and have Devon Corporation analyze the data he gathered while in space, and gave Roy a briefcase containing something that would be useful to Rayquaza, before leaving on the back of his Mega Charizard Y.

Character

Friede and Captain Pikachu enjoying Murdock's donuts

Friede appears to be a young and competentTrainer, albeit rather distracted and forgetful, as he forgets to mention certain things to his friends sometimes. Despite this, Friede is quite protective of his team, whether putting himself in danger to protect the ship or protecting his teammates from opponents, especially the younger members. InThe Treasure After the Storm!, Friede has stated that he doesn't like to be acknowledged as aPokémon Professor. If someone were to say his name in any type of formality, he would rather change the subject. When he introducedLiko andRoy as official members of the Rising Volt Tacklers, they both said their thanks and both referred him as "Mister Friede", which Friede quickly corrects them, preferring to be called simply by his name. However, Friede didn't mind being called "Master Friede" byUlt.

Friede also has a more immature and silly side, like when he eats the donuts made byMurdock for his nieceDot together withCaptain Pikachu, or when he is tricked by a merchant to buy his wares to remember two people who asked him about aBlack Rayquaza, however without getting any useful information. He also does not appear to takeAmethio seriously, often making snarky remarks before their routinely battles. Nonetheless, he is a formidable Trainer with access toTerastallization and has shown to be very wise, such as inSpecial Training with Cap!, when he offered advice and training for the younger members of the Rising Volt Tacklers in order to become great Pokémon Trainers.

Friede respectsLucca as she was his homeroom teacher and had done a lot for him, as he won't have met Captain Pikachu, regain his passion for researching and formed theRising Volt Tacklers without her help and guidance. Friede also seems to be close withOrla, due to being friends with her since childhood. Although they were apart for many years, Friede's friendship with Orla remain strong, as he immediately went to her for help in making an airship and accepted her request in joining him on his adventures. In addition, Friede has a very good relationship withLudlow and sees him as a mentor. Friede seems to be great friends with Murdock and enjoys hanging out with him. Friede even gets along really well with Mollie and his former teammateWy-Yes. However, Friede is very fond of the younger members, especially Liko and Roy, and does what he can to help them through their goals. Upon seeing Roy's growth in the past year and having a battle with him inHZ122, Friede acknowledge him as the teams new leader and equal.

Friede doesn't like to talk about his past and his life before forming the Rising Volt Tacklers, as seen inFlying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, when he didn't give the younger members any answer as to how Captain Pikachu was flying during a battle. However, after Orla told everyone that he was going to share as to how he met Captain Pikachu and the formation of the Rising Volt Tacklers with everyone, Friede gave in and decided to open up to his teammates about his past. As time passed, Friede has become more open to his teammates.

Pokémon

Friede's team consists of strong and independent Pokémon, typically viewed as leader figures by the younger Pokémon. He also has a tendency to give titles to his Pokemon, such as Captain Pikachu and Instructor Starmie.
