Explosion (Japanese:だいばくはつGiant Explosion) is a damage-dealingNormal-typemove introduced inGeneration I. It isTM47 in Generation I and isTM64 fromGeneration IV toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, as well as inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Effect
Explosion inflicts damage, and causes the user to faint.
Sturdy or a heldFocus Band orFocus Sash does not prevent the user from fainting.
This move cannot be used when a Pokémon with the AbilityDamp is on the field.
Generation I
| This move effect may be in need of research. Reason:Check whether this line applies to bothPokémon Stadium (Japanese) and the internationalPokémon Stadium: "In Pokémon Stadium, if Explosion breaks a target's substitute, the user will faint. The base power listed in Stadium is the one after halving Defense, i.e. 340." You candiscuss this on the talk page. |
Though itspower is listed as 170, the target'sDefense will be halved duringdamage calculation (unless it is at a value of 1), effectively doubling the power to 340.
The user of Explosion will faint even if the attack misses or the opponent is immune to it (due to beingGhost type).
If Explosion breaks a target'ssubstitute, the user will not faint, though its sprite will be replaced by a blank image. If the user of Explosion had a substitute at the time of such a situation, uses Substitute later, or switches out, its regular sprite will once again become visible.
If the user of Explosion attacks first and faints itself, the opponent will not act or be subjected to recurrent damage during that turn.
In Pokémon Stadium, if Explosion breaks a target's substitute, the user will faint. The base power listed in Stadium is the one after halving Defense, i.e. 340.
Generation II
Explosion's power isincreased to 250. The target's Defense is still halved, effectively doubling the power to 500.
The user of Explosion will now faint even if the target is behind asubstitute, or isprotected against it.
If the user of Explosion attacks first and faints itself, the opponent will not attack this turn, but is subjected to end-of-turn damage such as fromsandstorm.
Unlike in the previous game, Stadium 2 lists Explosion's power before halving Defense.
If Explosion is selected, but fails due toconfusion, then the user takes more confusion damage as well.
Generation III
The user's sprite no longer disappears upon using the move.
If the user of Explosion attacks first and faints itself, all other Pokémon may still attack this turn.
Generation IV
If all targets of Explosion have already fainted this turn such that there is no target when Explosion is being executed, Explosion will fail and the user will not faint.
Explosion's temporary Defense drop no longer boosts confusion damage.
Generation V
Explosion no longer halves the target's Defense. The user faints before dealing damage, unlike in previous generations.
If all targets of Explosion have already fainted this turn such that there is no target when Explosion is being executed, the user of Explosion will now faint regardless.
Generation VI onwards
Explosion returns to damaging the target before the user faints.
Explosion can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points ifBlock,Mean Look orSpider Web were used in the prior turn.
If used in aMax orTera Raid Battle, Explosion fails, and the user does not faint.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Explosion causes a 5×5 explosion centered on the user, that targets all Pokémon in the range; ally or enemy. FromSuper Mystery Dungeon, the move is instead classified as astatus move and the user will first give itself theExplosion status condition. With this, the user will only explode if attacked on the next turn.
Regardless of the user, the explosion deals 40 HP damage to enemy Pokémon and halves the current HP of the player's Pokémon (dealing at least 1 HP of damage).Fire-type take half the usual damage from Explosion. In Super Mystery Dungeon, the explosion will immediately defeat enemies in range, though Fire-type enemy Pokémon will only lose 50% of their HP. Damage to the player is the same as in previous games.
Explosion also destroys all items and wall tiles (other than those on the edge of the floor and in locked chambers) in range. It does not destroy walls inGates to Infinity. This move cannot be used if the current weather on the floor is rain, or if there is a Pokémon withDamp somewhere on the floor. When used by aGigantic Pokémon in Super Mystery Dungeon, the move's range is unchanged, however as it is calculated from the user's center, Explosion will only affect the one tile around the user.

Trivia
- Explosion is the only move with a base power of 250. It has the highest base power of all moves with fixed base power, surpassing evenZ-Moves,Max Moves, andG-Max Moves.
- However, other moves can reach a higher base power than Explosion under certain conditions:
- Last Respects can reach the highest base power of all moves if Pokémon faint 100 times on the user's side, with 5050. This can be done by usingreviving items on fainted Pokémon and having them faint again.
- Rollout andIce Ball can reach 960, ifDefense Curl is used before.
- Stored Power andPower Trip can reach 860 if all of the user'sstats are raised by six stages each.
- If the user has been hit six times,Rage Fist will reach a power of 350.
- IfStockpile is used three times beforeSpit Up is used, the latter will reach a base power of 300.
- However, other moves can reach a higher base power than Explosion under certain conditions:
- If Explosion is upgraded into theZ-MoveBreakneck Blitz, Breakneck Blitz will have a lower base power than Explosion (200 versus Explosion's 250).
- InGeneration I, ifSelfdestruct or Explosion knocks out the last remaining Pokémon on both sides of the field simultaneously, the player willblack out as normal, but the victory music still plays.
- Self-Destruct, Explosion, andMisty Explosion are the only three damaging moves whose battle animations play out even if they would miss or have no effect.
- All Pokémon that can have theAbilityAftermath can learn Explosion.
