Eusine (Japanese:ミナキMinaki;Eugene inThe Legend of Thunder!) is a character introduced inPokémon Crystal. He is a researcher and expert on theLegendary beasts who has chasedSuicune to no avail for ten years.
In the core series games
Eusine first appears inPokémon Crystal. He is first seen researching theBurned Tower, together withMorty. Later, he battles theplayer inCianwood City, just north of the Pokémon Seer, after seeingSuicune escaping from the town, hoping that by battling the player he will earn Suicune's respect as a Trainer. After Suicune has been caught in theTin Tower, he returns to his hometown,Celadon City, and can be found in CeladonPokémon Center waiting for the player to catch all threeLegendary beasts. After this is accomplished, Eusine will return to the Tin Tower and wait for the player to summonHo-Oh, and remains there after they have captured or defeated it, stating he will dedicate himself to studying Pokémon more.
Eusine also appears inPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, in which his storyline is almost identical at first but differs in the end. In these games, Eusine follows Suicune toKanto, chasing it around and ultimately to its final destination — theCerulean Cape. Before the player can catch Suicune, they must see it along with Eusine at Burned Tower,Cianwood City,Route 42,Vermilion City, andRoute 14 in that order before being able to catch it at the Cerulean Cape. After urging the player to engage with Suicune after understanding its desires, and whether the player does catch it or defeat it, Eusine expresses no regrets as he bids farewell after having witnessed a breathtaking moment. It is also revealed in these games that when Eusine was young, he was told stories about Suicune by his grandfather, who is very knowledgeable about Johto's folklore. Despite this, Eusine never mentions the Bell Tower, Ho-Oh, or his hometown in these games.

Pokémon the Series
History

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver
Eusine debuted inFor Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!, where he challengedAsh for daring to say that he met thelegendary beastSuicune. This might just have been a form of jealousy on his part, for Ash had also seenHo-Oh as well, while he had yet to encounter it himself. He managed to calm himself down long enough to work withMorty, Ash, andhis friends in their quest to retrieve theTin Tower's sacredCrystal Bells, which had been stolen byTeam Rocket. He later encountered Suicune and was set oncatching it for himself. However, Suicune usedRoar, which sentAlakazam back to itsPoké Ball to end the encounter before leaving. The brief encounter left a great impression on Eusine, and he quickly leftEcruteak City to chase Suicune.
The Legend of Thunder!
InThe Legend of Thunder!, Eugene[note 1] assistedJimmy,Marina, andVincent in theirbattle againstAttila andHun. Marina fell for him because he wore a cape, though he was quick to remind her that no one can touch his cape. While he was intent on meetingRaikou, Eugene kept Jimmy and his friends calm throughout the entire ordeal.
Character
Eusine is portrayed as a bold individual with an overwhelming obsession forLegendary Pokémon likeSuicune. However, he comes across as arrogant with a slight superiority complex. Due to his immense pride over his knowledge of myths and legends, Eusine is unprepared to listen to others and often assigns himself the leading role, such as when he relegatedKudo to the sidelines as he trackedRaikou inThe Legend of Thunder!.
He is apparently very close friends withMorty, who is also an expert on theEcruteak legends. Morty acts as Eusine's voice of reason, trying to convince him to calm down and ease up, but to no avail. When Eusine left suddenly at the end ofFor Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!, Morty's lack of surprise indicates that this has happened before.

History
Gold, Silver & Crystal arc
Eusine is first mentioned byMorty inMisdreavus Misgivings. Morty states that Eusine asked him to use his clairvoyance to search for theLegendary PokémonSuicune. Due to Suicune's Legendary status, Morty was unable to locate where it slept. After facing and losing to Suicune in battle, Morty calls Eusine to tell him about the encounter.
Eusine physically debuts inJumping Jumpluff!, where he meetsCrystal, another person searching for Suicune. After they introduce themselves to each other, Eusine deems Crystal his rival for their similar goal and proceeds to leave. He accidentally ends up crashing into a barn at theMoomoo Farm, angering the farmhands, who demand that Eusine leave and pay for the damages. By tricking the farmhands by healing theirMiltank with what he claims to be "magic", Eusine gets out of having to pay for the broken roof and earns himself free milk in the process. He is immediately approached by Crystal, who saw through the trick and knew that Eusine used aBerry to heal the Miltank. Eusine assumes Crystal had followed him to get a chance at getting close to Suicune, but she states that it was pure coincidence, as she is tracking Suicune with herPokédex.
Soon after, Suicune appears and attacks the two. Crystal deduces that the Suicune who attacked them is a fake and uncovers its true identity, aDitto sent to throw them off from the real Suicune's whereabouts. They realize that if someone sent a diversion, the real Suicune must currently be pursued by whoever sent the Ditto. Crystal and Eusine make their way to find Suicune by using Crystal's Pokédex to track its location. Upon spotting the people after Suicune, Eusine leaves Crystal to face the pursuers in battle. He tells Crystal to go after Suicune, who is heading toEcruteak City. Eusine finds out the pursuers are theTeam Rocket Elite Trio and faces them in battle. Eusine succeeds in defeating the trio and steals theClear Bell they had in their possession. Eusine heads to theBell Tower, where Crystal is facing Suicune in battle. He arrives just as Crystal had been defeated and blocked from accessing the tower due to Suicune's Crystal Wall. With the Clear Bell, Eusine bypasses the Crystal Wall and heads up the Bell Tower in hopes that Suicune is still there, only to find it already gone. After Crystal wakes up, Eusine realizes that Suicune was heading to the Bell Tower to meets its master,Ho-Oh. Eusine then leaves Crystal to continue his journey to capture Suicune.

During the final battle against theMasked Man, Eusine arrives to rescueMisty and an injured Suicune from being trapped in the Crystal Wall. Due to Misty's injuries, she tells Suicune that it will have to continue the battle against the Masked Man with a new partner. Although Eusine hoped to be chosen, he is disappointed when Suicune chooses Crystal as its new partner. Later, Eusine meets up with Morty, who asks if he is disappointed that he wasn't chosen by Suicune. Eusine confidently states that Suicune will choose him one day, as he did save its life.
HeartGold & SoulSilver arc
Eusine appears at theJohto Safari Zone selling crudely-drawn photos and poems of Suicune to visitors. There, Eusine encountersSilver, who had arrived to search for someone. The meeting is cut short when they are attacked byPetrel ofTeam Rocket. Eusine is incapacitated by tear gas created from Petrel'sKoffing, leaving Silver to battle the villain alone. After facing Petrel and defeating him, Silver obtains the twoPlates that were in Petrel's possession. Later, Silver reveals to Eusine about everything he learned from his battle with Petrel. Silver also reveals that the creator of Team Rocket is his father,Giovanni, and that it was created after Silver was kidnapped as a child by the Masked Man. Feeling bad for Silver's plight, Eusine recommends that Silver meet Morty and his clairvoyance to help him find the Plates.
Eusine is immediately attacked by a group of schoolchildren who accidentally mistook him for a Pokémon. The caretaker of the children is revealed to be Crystal, who was leading a school trip. Crystal decides to go with Silver on his journey to find the Plates and stop Team Rocket. Eusine is left behind to tend to the children, much to his frustration. At the end of the ninth chapter, Eusine encounters Suicune again and chases after it, much to Suicune's annoyance.

Trivia
- There is data inPokémon Crystal for the gender of everyTrainer class in the game, used to select which dialogue pool to sample from when randomly choosing the opponent's dialogue, with the exception of Eusine.
- Despite being mistakenly known as "Eugene" in the English and Spanish dubs ofThe Legend of Thunder!, Eusine was correctly named in theIsraeli dub, just as in theoriginal series, because the error was caught by the director of the series dub, Maya Bar Shalom. His situation matches that ofVincent.
- His HeartGold and SoulSilver artwork adds several diamond shaped patterns to his clothes, which resemble those seen on the body ofSuicune.
