Pokémon the Series

History
Pre-series

Erika’s love forGrass-typePokémon all began when she was young with herGloom. While wandering the streets of Celadon City, Erika was ambushed by a wildGrimer, but Gloom intervened and rescued its future Trainer from being attacked.
Pokémon the Series: The Beginning
Erika appeared inPokémon Scent-sation!, where she runs a perfumery inCeladon City, which sells scents from essences extracted from her garden plants and her Pokémon. It also sells a special brand of perfume made from the essence of her favorite Pokémon,Gloom.Misty,Brock, andPikachu were enamored with the scents, butAsh insulted the perfume. In protest, Erika had him banned from her store and by extension the greenhouse, which also served as the location of theCeladon Gym.
Later,Jessie andJames were caught trying to steal perfume and were also banned from the Gym. Ash found them and untied them in exchange for help entering the Gym. Disguised as a girl namedAshley, withTeam Rocketdisguised as Ashley's parents, Ash signed up as a student at the Gym. While Erika was reading a fairytale to some Grass Pokémon, Pikachu noticed the eerily familiar Ashley and exposed Ash's disguise. Even so, Erika agreed to his request for a battle.
Erika sent out herTangela againstAsh's Bulbasaur. Ash quickly recalled Bulbasaur after it wasparalyzed by a close-rangeStun Spore.Charmander then defeated Erika'sWeepinbell before being overwhelmed by Gloom's scent. However, before the match could continue, it was interrupted when Team Rocket started a fire in the Gym as revenge for being thrown out. While Misty, Brock, and Erika'sGym assistants worked together to douse the fire, Ash ran into the Gym and successfully rescued Gloom. Out of gratitude, Erika awarded theRainbow Badge to Ash.
She reappeared in a flashback in the Japanese version ofPikachu's Goodbye.
Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

She hosted aPokémon Flower Arrangement class which Ash attended alongsideGoh andChloe. Erika’s class helpedGoh's Pinsir andChloe's Eevee improve their confidence.
InHeroes Unite!, Erika and Leafeon reappeared in a fantasy, alongside other Trainers Chloe and her Eevee met.
Character
Erika is kind-hearted and readily accepts students to teach them about being a goodTrainer and perfume manufacturing. However, she also possesses a temperamental side, particularly when her perfume is insulted.
She is confident and gracefully composed inbattle. Her key strategy to bring out the best in her Pokémon is empathy. She usesstatus moves likeStun Spore to overwhelm her opponent's Pokémon. She also used Gloom's stench to overcomeAsh's Charmander, aFire-type with a type advantage againstGrass-type Pokémon.
