Emma (Japanese:マチエールMatiere) is a character introduced inPokémon X and Y who plays a major role in its post-game's side story. She is an orphaned young girl inLumiose City who was found and taken care of by the detectiveLooker.
In Pokémon X and Y, she is the only character in the games to have theTrainer classesSuspicious Woman (Japanese:あやしいおとなSuspicious Adult),Suspicious Child (Japanese:あやしいこどもSuspicious Child), andSuspicious Lady (Japanese:あやしいおねえさんSuspicious Miss).
InPokémon Legends: Z-A, she inherits the head role at her detective agency from Looker in Lumiose City and she is the only character in the game to have the Trainer classDetective (Japanese:探偵Detective).

Pokémon X and Y
In Pokemon X and Y, Emma is a young girl with tanned skin, blue eyes and black long hair that is tied into twin tails. Her attire consists of a white shirt under a blue sweater with a yellow M-shaped patch on her right hip, an orange short skirt, black leggings, and orange Mary Jane shoes.
As Essentia, she wears a tight full body suit called the Expansion Suit. The suit is mostly black with orange shoulders. She wears a black full-face helmet with an orange visor covering her face. Parts of a visor glow a bright yellow in the shape of the letter E.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Emma is now older and her hair is cut into a bobcut. She now wears her Expansion Suit all the time with a beige cropped trenchcoat over it. On the left side of her head is a yellow hair ornament shaped like an eye. HerKey Stone is embedded on her Expansion Suit's chest.
History
Pokémon X and Y
In X and Y, Emma is a young girl living in the dark alleyways ofLumiose City with herEspurr friend Mimi (Japanese:もこおMokō). She is initially an illiterate orphan who doesn't even have enough money to buyPoké Balls. She meets Looker and the player during their first case, where concerned mothers reported that their children have been hanging out in suspicious alleyways. In reality, the children were playing with and protecting Emma and Mimi. Looker invites Emma to live at theLooker Bureau and work as his assistant. Though she is interested, Emma doesn't want to leave Mimi behind. Looker extends the invitation to Mimi as well, but Mimi is terrified of adults and runs off. After the player has found and befriended Mimi, Emma is much friendlier towards Looker and accepts his invitation, heading back to the Looker Bureau with him, Mimi, and the player. Emma then begins to learn how to read, write, and do basic arithmetic under Looker's tutelage.
During the following case, Emma returns to the Bureau to find a hystericalTourist angrily shouting insults in English (Japanese if the language is set to English) about Looker, who had left moments ago under the assumption that the woman wanted tea. Speaking in the language of the tourist, Emma defends Looker while Mimi translates their conversation telepathically for the player and Looker, revealing that the woman had her Pokémon stolen at theLumiose Station. When Looker returns and learns of the situation, Emma tries to discourage him from helping the woman, but Looker insists that anyone in distress deserves their help and quickly leaves for the station. Emma then begs for the player to help Looker, revealing that he is defenseless because hisonly Pokémon died during a past case.The culprits at the station turn out to be theLumiose Gang, a trio of gangsters, who stole the Pokémon in order to lure Looker to their turf for a challenge. Emma had unintentionally become their boss after beating them in a fight, and they recognized her strength as leadership, but she stopped hanging around them once she took up residence at the Looker Bureau. Once the gangsters are defeated by the player, Emma shows up and demands that they return the stolen Pokémon and apologize to Looker.
Emma steadily grows worried that she and Mimi are a financial burden on Looker, though he assures her that they have enough money to get by and encourages her to focus on her studies. Still feeling guilty, Emma sets off to look for part-time work at a café that she saw was hiring. It turns out that the café was actuallyLysandre Café and Emma was tricked into being a test subject forXerosic's invention, the Expansion Suit. This leads to her disappearing for long stretches of time, which worries Looker greatly.
When in the Expansion Suit, Emma is given the codenameEssentia (Japanese:エスプリEsprit). The suit enhances her physical abilities to superhuman levels, gives her the ability to override a Poké Ball's programming, and allows her to change her appearance. While running his tests, Xerosic finds that Emma has no experience as aTrainer and teaches her the basics, also allowing her to borrow his Pokémon. However, the Pokémon prefer playing with Emma instead of battling, which forces Xerosic to control the suit remotely. Emma falls unconscious while the remote-control function is engaged, and she has no memory of anything that happens while she is "asleep".
During her tests as Essentia, she behaves like a robot and follows Xerosic's every command. The first test has her sneak into theLumiose Museum and vandalize a painting. Afterwards, she begins lurking in dark alleys and challenging unsuspecting people to battle, stealing their Poké Balls afterwards. This catches the attention of Looker, who works with the player to bait and catch the perpetrator. When she gets cornered, Mimi runs in, tipping Looker off to Essentia's true identity. Xerosic's control over the suit starts to malfunction after Essentia tries to attack Mimi, only to accidentally hurt Looker. Essentia flees the scene and the tests are temporarily suspended.
The following day, the player is sent to apprehend Xerosic at Lysandre Labs. After the player defeats Essentia in a series of battles, Looker arrives and demands that Xerosic release Emma. After the suit's remote-control function starts glitching again, Xerosic agrees, letting Emma go and allowing Looker to take him into custody.
After Xerosic is brought to justice, Looker reveals to Emma that he is a member of theInternational Police and that he must leave to continue his civic duty. However, he feels strongly towards Emma and in order to ensure that she has a bright future, purchases the entire building where Looker Bureau was located, and instructs Emma to use it however she sees fit. As the new head detective, Emma vows to keep Lumiose City safe with her identity as Essentia, using the suit and Pokémon that Xerosic gave her.

After completing the Looker storyline, the player can have arematch with Emma in her Expansion Suit once per day on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, she will not be wearing the Expansion Suit and talk about her duties as the head of the Looker Bureau.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Five years after Pokémon X and Y, Emma lives inLumiose City and works as a detective. She is said to have inherited the head role at her detective agency in Lumiose, where the player assists her by tracking down missing Pokémon, locating lost items, and partaking in the occasional Pokémon battle. Her hair has been cut to a short bob, and she wears her Expansion Suit under a cropped trench coat. Her suit now has aKey Stone embedded in it.

InPokémon X and Y, after Emma was brainwashed into "Essentia", Mimi still recognized her, but ended up being attacked by her, but saved by Looker just in time, which actually helped Emma regain control. InPokémon Legends: Z-A, 5 years after X and Y, Mimi and its psychic abilities proved vital in assisting the Emma in her detective work inLooker Bureau, acting as a translator and tracker.
Noticeably, in Legends: Z-A, duringSide Mission EX 1: "Shine Bright like a Gemstone", Mimi picks up on some sort of psychic energy from the player'sDiancite and successfully locates aDiancie accompanied by twoCarbink at a rooftop inMagenta Sector 8.

History
Pre-series
Emma grew up in the streets ofLumiose City and never knew either of her parents. One day, she met a man namedLooker, who took her in and taught her how to read and write. Eventually, Looker left Lumiose City and allowed Emma to keep living in the building in which he owned. At some point, Emma met a young boy namedUlt who, much like herself, lived in the streets of Lumiose City and she kindly decided to invite him to live with her, while also teaching him how to read and write, just as Looker had done for herself.
Episode: Mega Evolution
Emma first appeared inMega Evolution - Ult, where she hosted Ult and his friendRoy at her home, cooking them a feast and kindly encouraging Roy to enjoy it as much as he can. After Ult left to challenge theYellow Blast, Emma shared his past with Roy and asked him to become friends with Ult, noticing that he's never cared about anyone as much as he did currently, which Roy gladly complied.
InMega Evolution - Bonds, Emma said goodbye to Ult and Roy, during the farewell with Ult, Emma wished Ult a good trip and that he will always have a home with her, and that he is like family to her. With Roy, Emma thanked him for everything he did for Ult and then used Mimi to senseCaptain Pikachu's feelings for Roy and highlighted how much Roy was becoming likeFriede. Some time later, Emma and Mimi found Roy's hat and placed it next to a picture of her with her Pokémon and Roy and Ult.
Character
Emma is a good-natured young girl, allowing Ult to live with her and teaching him how to read and write, and finding his sharp-tongued demeanor quite amusing. She's also a good hostess, going to great lengths to make Roy feel welcomed at her home and even pushing herself a little too hard to serve him and Ult during dinner. Emma is also quite a klutz, almost dropping all of her plates (with the food still on) because of the heavy weight she was carrying. She's also quite forgetful, forgetting to mention to Roy that she dreamed of becoming a detective, so much so that her forgetful nature remindedCaptain Pikachu ofFriede.

Pokémon Adventures
Emma debuted inTrevenant Pokes. She was originally a normal child that lived with cruel parents, but ran away from home to live as a street urchin in theLumiose City alleyways. She banded together with other children and Pokémon that had similar experiences, eventually forming the Lumiose Gang. Emma would later end up befriendingCassius and joined his group, but due to her lack of computer skills, she took on odd jobs to support her friends and avoid feeling like a burden.
Emma first appeared as Essentia atShalour City, where she attacked theTower of Mastery to obtain the secrets ofMega Evolution. She attempted to steal the building by covering the surrounding area with herTrevenant's roots. To prevent Mega Evolution from falling into the wrong hands,Korrina andGurkinn were forced to activate the tower's self-destruct mechanism, destroying the building and allowing them to escape.
Emma debuted as herself inMorphing Manectric, where she was introduced toX and his friends. Emma traveled with Cassius and his gang as they traveled aroundKalos maintaining thePokémon Storage System in various places like theBattle Chateau. InShooting Frogadier, Cassius was informed that Emma went missing, which he noted had happened before.
InTying Trevenant, Essentia provided support forCelosia, who used mind-controlled residents ofVaniville Town to move the dormant tree form ofXerneas to theTeam Flare Secret HQ. X and his friends confronted the villains, but the former's attempt to Mega Evolve two of his Pokémon at once ended in failure, giving Essentia the opportunity to capture them. The heroes were freed by Gurkinn, who came to help alongside Korrina andDiantha. With theGengar he received from Gurkinn, X defeated Essentia, forcing her to flee under Xerosic's orders.
InGyarados Changes, Emma followed X toGeosenge Town after finding out herMimi crawled into X'sKanga's pouch. They went inside the Team Flare Secret HQ, but were separated when X stepped on awarp panel and was teleported away. Emma continued on by herself, eventually reaching the underground section. There, Emma found a very tall man namedAZ locked in a jail cell and befriended him. InFlabébé Blooms,Trevor,Tierno, andShauna managed to sneak inside the Secret HQ. After Emma introduced everyone to each other, Tierno freed AZ from his cell. The group headed towards theultimate weapon's control room, where they found that X failed to defeatLysandre, but was able to free Xerneas. Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna tried removing the ultimate weapon's key, but couldn't pull it out in time before it fired. To Lysandre's frustration, the combined efforts of X, his friends, and theKalosGym Leaders successfully weakened the ultimate weapon and prevented it from taking any innocent lives.
InRhyhorn Charges, AZ let himself be captured, buying time for Xerneas and allowing it to take Emma and the others back to the surface. Xerneas joinedY's team and wasnicknamed Xerxer. Y ordered Xerxer to destroy the ultimate weapon, but were interrupted byMalva and herYveltal. Due to Xerneas and Yveltal being evenly matched, Xerosic announced that Lysandre ordered a ceasefire. Xerneas confirmed this and retreated, taking Y and the others with it.
InHawlucha Attacks,Professor Sycamore was attacked by a group ofHawlucha under Essentia's command. When X's group rescued the professor, they realized the Hawlucha had a Trainer and went around to find them. Upon being found by Y, Essentia used her suit's Poké Ball Jack function to take control of Y's Xerxer. X and Y fought with their Mega-Evolved Pokémon, but the battle was interrupted by the arrival ofZygarde, who aimed to suppress Xerxer's power. While Zygarde charged itself with the power of nature, it was left defenseless, giving Essentia the chance to catch it, losing control of Xerxer in the process. Essentia fled, but the repeated damage to her suit prevented Xerosic from being able to communicate with or control her.
InYveltal Steals, Lysandre summoned Essentia and Zygarde to battle X,Blue, andBlaine at thePokémon Village. With a remote control device designed by Xerosic, Lysandre controlled Essentia's body like a puppet instead of her usual AI and forced her to command Zygarde's attacks. While Zygarde foughtMewtwo, X decided to take out Essentia to stop her from controlling it. He hadMarisso attack Essentia, shattering her helmet, only to be horrified to learn it was Emma in the suit. X tried to help Emma out of the suit, but she refused, noting how the suit made her feel safe and protected. When asked if defeating Team Flare would make people treat Emma better, X was left speechless.
InZygarde Agitated, X told Emma that despite how hard life is, she still has people who care about her. Hearing X's words, Emma became encouraged to fight Lysandre, but she was still under his control. Cassius arrived and destroyed the remote, freeing Emma. Before Emma could give a command to Zygarde, she was attacked by Lysandre, who took Zygarde's Poké Ball and used it to send everyone flying away. Emma and Cassius survived, but were left unable to continue fighting.
InXerneas Gives, after the defeat of Team Flare, Cassius gave X and his friends a ride back to Lumiose City. After they arrived, Emma and Cassius waved X's group goodbye as they parted ways.

Mimi (Japanese:もこおMokō) was originally part of a group of four Espurr used by a Team Flare Grunt to distractX and his friends. While three of the Espurr were caught by Cassius and hisGourgeist, Mimi was simply left confused and wandered around before being found by Emma and given its nickname.

Trevenant is Essentia's first known Pokémon and was taken from a Trainer through the usage of the Poké Ball Jack function. It was used to attackGurkinn andKorrina at theTower of Mastery. It kept Korrina distracted while Essentia talked to Gurkinn. Due to its typing, Korrina's MegaLucario was unable to do any damage to it. When Trevenant began covering the tower in its roots, Gurkinn and Korrina destroyed the tower to protect it from being taken by Essentia. While overseeing the plan to moveXerneas to Team Flare's base, Trevenant was used to patrol the forest and keep out any intruders. There, it battled X and Y and managed to defeat them both by binding them and their Pokémon with the forest's plants. After being freed, X fought Trevenant with his newly-obtainedGengar, Garma. By Mega Evolving Garma into Mega Gengar, Trevenant was easily defeated.

These fourHawlucha were used to attack Professor Sycamore at Anistar City. When X and his friends arrived, they battled the Hawlucha to save the professor. X sent out hisRute, which easily dodged the Hawlucha's moves before sending out the rest of his team to battle all the Hawlucha at once. During her battle against Y, Emma used a single Hawlucha to battle her. By throwing stones, it managed to knock Y out of the air. Without their team member, the other three Hawlucha lost their teamwork and were easily defeated by X's team.

Zygarde, also known as Kalos's "Overseer" (Japanese:監視者Watcher), first appeared inAnistar City. When Essentia attempted to capture it by having Trevenant bind it with vines, Zygarde attempted to retaliate by summoning the forces of nature and absorbing them into its body. Doing so left it completely defenseless, allowing Essentia to easily capture it and escape. At the Pokémon Village, Lysandre controlled Essentia so that he may use Zygarde to battle against X,Blue, andBlaine. As it battledMewtwo, X had hisMarisso smash Essentia's helmet in the hopes that it may sever Lysandre's connection to Zygarde. After Emma decides to fight Lysandre, he steals Zygarde's Poké Ball, allowing him to directly command it.
Controlled

With her Poké Ball Jack, Essentia took control of Y'sXerneas, Xerxer. She used Xerneas to battle against X and Y, but was unable to fully control it. During the battle, X damages Essentia's helmet, causing her to lose further control over Xerneas. When Zygarde interrupts the battle, Essentia focuses her attention on capturing it, causing her to lose control over Xerneas entirely.

- A replica of Emma's Expansion Suit helmet can be bought fromAtticus atPorto Marinada inPokémon Scarlet and Violet.
- The yellow hairclip that Emma sports in herPokémon Legends: Z-A appearance resembles the organs found under anEspurr's ears.
- In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Emma implies that herMalamar is the same oneXerosic gave her five years earlier,[6] although it is a lower level than its latest appearance inPokémon X and Y.
- This can also be extended to theCrobat she uses in aMulti Battle duringSide Mission 155: "Hyperspatial Scuffle vs. Team Flare Nouveau" being the same one given to her by Xerosic.
- Emma,Urbain/Taunie, andKorrina are the only non-player characters in the core series to have used multipleMega-Evolved Pokémon in a single battle.
- All Pokémon in in Emma'sparty have a Mega Evolution each, a trait she shares with Korrina. However, unlike Korrina, she does not Mega Evolve all of them.
