Biology

Emboar using its flaming beard to set its arms on fire

Emboar is a bulky, bipedalPokémon with pig-like features. It has a red nose, large bushy black eyebrows, and two tusks protruding from its lower jaw. Constantly burning flames cover the front of its neck and shoulders. The fire beard comes from the body flame within its body. It has short legs and thick arms. Its arms have orange upper portions while the legs have red upper portions. All of its limbs have black lower portions with thin yellow lines where the upper and lower colors meet. These lines are straight on the arms and spiked on the legs. The arms have red lines around the wrists and tufts of fur on the elbows. The hands are tipped with three claws, while the feet have two claws. A large, dark horizontal stripe on the chest of Emboar has swirled yellow markings. Its small tail ends in a tuft of hair.

Using the wreath of flames on its neck and shoulders, Emboar will set its hands on fire. It uses its power and speed to master fighting moves. This power can be increased when Emboar's neck flame intensifies. The more dire the situation is, the more excited Emboar becomes to the point of enjoying itself. Though very tough and relentless when fighting, it shows deep affection for those it considers friends. It can also unleash powerful blasts of fire using only its nose and cloak its body in a fire to use many powerful attacks.

Prior toGeneration VIII, Emboar and its pre-evolved forms were theonly known Pokémon capable of learning the moveHeat Crash.

Forms

Emboar canMega Evolve into Mega Emboar.

As a result of Mega Evolution, Mega Emboar has become even more powerful, both in physical strength and in fire energy.[1] Mega Emboar's flaming beard has grown to envelop its whole upper body as a piece of armor, blazing mostly as red fire, with yellow flames at the shoulders, upper back, and chest. The black fur previously covering only Emboar's arms and midsection has spread to the rest of Mega Emboar's body, except for the head, which remains orange. The swirled markings on its abdomen have been slightly reorganized, with two of them symmetrically positioned on the front and the remaining one on the center of its back. Its waist and tail are covered in red, jagged fur. There is a yellow and a red line on both of its wrists and knees, with the ones on its wrists being circular and the ones on its knees being angular. Mega Emboar's eyebrows take on sharper, triangular shapes, accompanied by a curled brow above each eye, and it has gained a tuft of hair similar to a topknot on the back of its head. Two pairs of tusks sprout out of its mouth, with the outer ones being much longer.

In battle, Mega Emboar wields a serpentine, halberd spear shaped from blazing flames it emitted from its palms.[1] The spear is made of red fire with a yellow stripe running through the middle in its entirety. The upper half of the spear is more jagged than the lower half and ends in a split, with both ends curving slightly inward. This Pokémon is strongly driven by emotion, which are said to be running high due to the effects of Mega Evolution. As such, it tends to act alone and relentlessly challenges anyone it sees, but still retains a strong sense of duty, to the point of risking its own life in order to rescue an emperiled friend. The more riled up Mega Emboar is, the hotter the fire on its beard and spear burns, with the latter being able to reach temperatures of 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit (10,000 degrees Celsius).[1] When Mega Emboar unleashes a punch with its enhanced muscles, this single-fist blow is strong enough to destroy half of a reinforced concrete building.[2]

Trivia

Emboar in Pokémon Battle Chess
  • Emboar,Samurott, andSerperior all share the same base stat total of 528.
  • In some games, thePokédex states that Emboar can "throw a fire punch". However, this was first said inPokémon Black, while Emboar was unable to learn the moveFire Punch untilPokémon Black 2 and White 2.
    • In the Japanese version of the Pokédex entries, the "fire punch" is written as 「ほのおの パンチ」 (in the kanji version, the equivalent is 「炎の パンチ」). Except for the addition of a space, this is almost the same as 「ほのおのパンチ」 (the Japanese name of Fire Punch). Similarly, the English Pokédex text mentions "fire punch" in lowercase, while moves like "Fire Punch" are written intitle case instead.
  • Emboar appears inPokémon Battle Chess BW Version. Along withVictini, it is the only piece that has its power raised when damaged. Also, along withZoroark, Emboar doesn't behave like any traditional piece in chess.
  • Emboar has the highest baseHP stat among all fully evolvedfirst partner Pokémon.
  • Mega Emboar is theonly Pokémon with a base stat total of 628.

Origin

Emboar is based on a boar. Additionally,Ken Sugimori has said that Tepig, Pignite, and Emboar were designed in a Chinese style, specifically mentioning the character ofZhang Fei fromRomance of the Three Kingdoms as Emboar's inspiration.[3] Zhang Fei was assassinated by his own subordinates, and had his head severed and presented for the opposing faction, which may be alluded to in Emboar's design, as its head is "separated" from its body by a wreath of fire. The wreath of fire also resembles a cape or a scarf. Emboar may also be based onZhu Bajie, a pig demon from the Chinese taleJourney to the West.Serperior, Emboar, andSamurott's evolutionary lines are collectively based on Western, Chinese, and Japanese culture respectively, to represent the diversity of theUnova region.[3]

Appearance-wise, Emboar looks much like awild boar with elements of aBritish Saddleback in awrestling singlet. The swirl pattern around its abdomen resembles the patterns on ading orancient Greek pottery.

Emboar's Fighting typing might be a reference towar pigs, more specifically incendiary pigs, a form of ancient warfare reported by a couple of Greek military writers.

Mega Emboar seems to emphasize the aforementioned inspiration from Zhang Fei, as he was said to own a "1.8zhang long serpent spear", a weapon similar to the one Mega Emboar obtains upon Mega Evolving.

Name origin

Emboar may be a combination ofember, emperor, andboar.

Enbuoh may be a combination of 炎en (flame), 豚buta (pig), 武bu (martial arts), ブー (oink), 王ō (king), and possiblyember andboar.
