Embargo (Japanese:さしおさえSeize) is a non-damagingDark-typemove introduced inGeneration IV. It wasTM63 from Generation IV toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Effect

Generation IV

For five turns, the target's held item has its effects negated and its Trainer cannot use items from theBag on it. The effect wears off if the Pokémon switches out.

Embargo does not negate item effects that affectprize money, experience, effort values, orfriendship, such as those of theAmulet Coin,Lucky Egg,Power Weight, orSoothe Bell.

The Speed drop from theIron Ball,Macho Brace, andPower items (such as thePower Bracer) is not negated by Embargo. However, thegrounding effect of the Iron Ball is negated.

A Pokémon under the effect of Embargo cannot useFling orNatural Gift. If the target of Fling is under the effect of Embargo, items thrown at it will not activate. If a Pokémon affected by Embargo usesBug Bite orPluck, it will consume the target's held Berry without gaining its effects. If a Pokémon affected by Embargo usesJudgment, it will be aNormal-type move.

Embargo fails if used on a Pokémon withMultitype or a Pokémon holding aGriseous Orb.

Generations V to VII

Embargo can now be reflected withMagic Coat.

Embargo now negates the Speed drop from theIron Ball,Macho Brace, andPower items (such as thePower Bracer).

If the target ofFling is under the effect of Embargo, items thrown at it now activate as usual. If a Pokémon affected by Embargo usesBug Bite orPluck, it will now receive the effects of a consumed held Berry. If a Pokémon affected by Embargo usesTechno Blast orMulti-Attack, it will be aNormal-type move.

Embargo can now be used successfully on a Pokémon withMultitype and Origin Forme Giratina. However, Embargo cannot negate form-changing effects of items.

Embargo does not prevent the Pokémon fromMega Evolving with aMega Stone, undergoingPrimal Reversion with aRed Orb orBlue Orb, or using aZ-Move with aZ-Crystal.

If powered up by aDarkinium Z into Z-Embargo, the user'sSpecial Attack stat rises one stage.

Generation VIII onwards

Embargo cannot be selected in a battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Embargo inflicts theEmbargo status condition, preventing the target from using any items. This includes throwing items or eating edible items. However in theExplorers series, this does not prevent the effects of held items (for example, Mobile Scarf will still allow the user to travel in all kinds of terrain, and Seeds will still influenceNatural Gift). InSuper Mystery Dungeon, the user will also be unable to use held items such asLooplets.
