Dusclops (Japanese:サマヨールSamayouru) is aGhost-typePokémon introduced inGeneration III.

Itevolves fromDuskull starting atlevel 37 and evolves intoDusknoir whentraded while holding aReaper Cloth.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer toGame data→Evolution data for these details.)

Biology

Dusclops is aPokémon with a roundish gray body with two stubby legs. Its body is hollow and wrapped in bandages. It has a single red eye and three tooth-like projections. The red eye is said to be the true form of Dusclops, but no one has yet to see this claim. It has two wispy, light gray growths coming out of its shoulders and one on top of its head. Its light gray hands are almost always depicted as being directly attached to its body, though inPK15 and in several panels ofPokémon Adventures they can be seen floating independently.

Its body can absorb anything much like ablack hole, pulling through the gaps between the bandages and wrapping it. It is unknown what happens when something is absorbed in Dusclops, as nothing ever comes back out. It will wave its hands and eyes to hypnotize opponents and then force them to do as it desires. Dusclops preys on driftingwill-o'-the-wisps, sucking them into its body. It lives inforests and mountainsides, and is generally active during nighttime.

Evolution

Dusclops evolves fromDuskull and evolves intoDusknoir.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Dusclops has its own mini-game on the Sapphire Table, which can be accessed the first time the three Poké Balls in the middle of the table are lit up. Dusclops will not appear until 20Duskull have been hit. After that, Dusclops must be hit five times to win. However, it will suck up the ball for a brief period if attacked from the front so it must be hit from behind or while it is moving.

Trivia

  • Dusclops can be seen as a parallel toBanette. Both areGeneration IIIGhost-type Pokémon that evolve from their pre-evolved forms at level 37. Both also have the same base stat total. Wild Dusclops are exclusive toPokémon Ruby, while wild Banette are exclusive to Pokémon Sapphire.
    • However, with the introduction ofDusknoir inGeneration IV and Mega Banette inGeneration VI, the similarities between the two evolutionary lines have become less notable, as Dusknoir has not received a Mega Evolution and Banette cannot evolve further.

Origin

Dusclops' hollow and horizontally segmented body, containing a ball of fire inside (presumably anonibi orhitodama) may hint at it being based on aChōchin-obake — a hauntedJapanese paper lantern. Itscylopean single eye is a common feature of manyyokai, including versions of the Chōchin-obake.

Dusclops' body being described as being covered in bandages suggests it is also based on amummy.

Name origin

Dusclops may be a combination ofdusk andcyclops.

Samayouru may be a combination of 彷徨うsamayou (to wander about) and 夜yoru (night).
