Durant (Japanese:アイアントAiant) is a dual-typeBug/SteelPokémon introduced inGeneration V.

It is not known toevolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

A typical Durant nest

Durant is an insectoidPokémon with a steel body that has three distinct sections. Its ovoid abdomen is dark gray with a light gray band wrapping around the middle, and two circles resembling rivets near a jagged seam on either side. Durant's thorax is slightly smaller, but identical in design with its abdomen — the only difference being one circle on either side instead of two. Its head is spherical and similar in appearance to its body, being mostly light gray with dark gray sections on each side, and two circular rivet-like circles on the forehead. On each side of its head are large red eyes with hollow black pupils. Durant has two round mandibles that it uses to grab things and feed itself. The mandibles are attached below its eyes and are situated in front of its horizontally opening mouth. Atop its head are two long antennae, each tipped with small spheres. Durant has six black legs sprouting from its thorax. Each leg has one claw at its tip, except the front legs that each have two.

Durant are extremely territorial. They form colonies and use their mandibles, which can crush rocks, to dig underground nests through mountains. These nests are designed to be maze-like, with complicated, interconnected tunnels. When a Durant colony is threatened, each individual performs their own different roles together in order to keep out and fight back intruders, such as their natural predatorHeatmor or aSandaconda looking to eat the eggs in their nest. Durant protect themselves from Heatmor by covering their bodies in steel armor and using their mandibles to attack. As seen in thePokémon the Series: Black & White episodeBattling the Leaf Thieves!, Durant prefers to eat vegetation, namely leaves. It will attack swiftly and aggressively if bothered, but will not pursue intruders once outside of its colony.

Trivia

Origin

Durant is based on anant.[1] It may specifically be based on thetrap-jaw ant for its prominent jaws, or either the silver spiny sugar ant (Polyrhachis schlueteri) or theSaharan silver ant (Cataglyphis bombycina) for their silver colorations. ItsSteel-type might have been chosen to be weak to its rival anteater Pokémon's type,Heatmor, which isFire-type and has a tongue made out of flames. Durant'sAbilities,Hustle andTruant, may reference scientific researches showing that in an ant colony, some workers will exhibit diligent hard-working behavior while others will showcase lazy behavior.[2]

Name origin

Durant may be a combination ofdurable ordurus (Latin for hard) andant.

Aiant may be a combination of アイアンaian (iron) andant.
