Dream Eater (Japanese:ゆめくいDream Eat) is a damage-dealingPsychic-typemove introduced inGeneration I.
It is:
- TM42 in Generations I andII.
- TM85 fromGeneration IV toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- TM59 inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TM127 inPokémon Legends: Z-A.
Effect
Dream Eater only works if the target isasleep; otherwise, it does nothing. Dream Eater inflicts damage, and 50% of the damage dealt to the target is restored to the user asHP (up to the user's maximum HP). However, if this attack deals 1 HP of damage, 1 HP will be restored to the user.
Dream Eater also affects targets with theComatose Ability, which act as though they are asleep without the status condition.
If the user is holding aBig Root, the HP restored is increased by 30% (making the restored HP 65% of the damage dealt). Big Root does not increase the damage dealt.
When used on a Pokémon with theLiquid Ooze Ability, the user will lose the amount of HP it would have gained instead.
A Pokémon under the effect ofHeal Block is unable to use Dream Eater. If there are no other usable moves, it will useStruggle.
If HP is restored to the user when its current HP is greater than its maximum HP, its current HP will be set equal to its maximum HP.
Generation I
In the localized versions of the Generation I games, if Dream Eater breaks asubstitute, no HP will be restored to the user. In the Japanese version ofGeneration I games and all versions of thePokémon Stadium series games, Dream Eater will always miss if the target has a substitute.
Generations II to IV
Dream Eater fails if the target has a substitute.
Dream Eater can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points ifCalm Mind orHypnosis was used in the previous turn.
Generation V onwards
Dream Eater can now hit a substitute and will properly heal the user when damaging a substitute, even if it was broken.
Dream Eater can be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if a sleep-inducing status move (exceptPsycho Shift andRest) was used in the prior turn.

Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Dream Eater isGengar's second move. It is obtained by evolving intoHaunter at level 5 and upgradingLick into it instead ofHex. The user shoots forward a mysterious orb, sleeping enemies when it hits. If used again when a nearby enemy is asleep, the user teleports behind them and attacks: dealing damage to the enemy, healing the user, and reducing the cooldown of Shadow Ball or Sludge Bomb. At level 11, its damage and healing is increased.
