Dream Eater (Japanese:ゆめくいDream Eat) is a damage-dealingPsychic-typemove introduced inGeneration I.

It is:

Effect

Dream Eater only works if the target isasleep; otherwise, it does nothing. Dream Eater inflicts damage, and 50% of the damage dealt to the target is restored to the user asHP (up to the user's maximum HP). However, if this attack deals 1 HP of damage, 1 HP will be restored to the user.

Dream Eater also affects targets with theComatose Ability, which act as though they are asleep without the status condition.

If the user is holding aBig Root, the HP restored is increased by 30% (making the restored HP 65% of the damage dealt). Big Root does not increase the damage dealt.

When used on a Pokémon with theLiquid Ooze Ability, the user will lose the amount of HP it would have gained instead.

A Pokémon under the effect ofHeal Block is unable to use Dream Eater. If there are no other usable moves, it will useStruggle.

If HP is restored to the user when its current HP is greater than its maximum HP, its current HP will be set equal to its maximum HP.

Generation I

In the localized versions of the Generation I games, if Dream Eater breaks asubstitute, no HP will be restored to the user. In the Japanese version ofGeneration I games and all versions of thePokémon Stadium series games, Dream Eater will always miss if the target has a substitute.

Generations II to IV

Dream Eater fails if the target has a substitute.

Dream Eater can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points ifCalm Mind orHypnosis was used in the previous turn.

Generation V onwards

Dream Eater can now hit a substitute and will properly heal the user when damaging a substitute, even if it was broken.

Dream Eater can be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if a sleep-inducing status move (exceptPsycho Shift andRest) was used in the prior turn.

Dream Eater inflicts damage, and 50% of the damage dealt to the target is restored to the user as HP, including excess damage. The move will fail if the target is not affected by a sleep-relatedstatus condition. The move is affected by theMuzzle status condition.

InGates to Infinity, the user will heal based on how much HP the target lost, with excess damage not being accounted for. This is changed back to what it previously was inSuper Mystery Dungeon.
