Biology

The skeleton of a Dragonite inPokémon Adventures

Dragonite is adraconic, bipedalreptilianPokémon with light orange skin. It has large, grayish-green eyes and a round snout with small nostrils. A pair of long, thin antennae sprout from the top of its head with a small horn set between them. Its striated underbelly is cream-colored and extends from its neck to the tip of its long, tapering tail. It has thick arms and legs ending in three claws each. The leg joints are well defined, while its arms have a smooth, rounded appearance. Dragonite's wings are small relative to its body with teal wing membranes. As mentioned inPokémon Sleep, Dragonite is known to sleep soundly while displaying its belly.[1] This rare sight is said to be an exhausted Dragonite resting after flying over the vast seas.

Despite its bulky build, Dragonite is capable of flying faster than the speed of sound, being able to circle the globe in sixteen hours. A kind-hearted Pokémon with human-like intelligence, Dragonite shows signs of altruism: it is said to save humans from drowning and lead lost or foundering ships to safety. As demonstrated inGreat Bowls of Fire!, however, it will go on an uncontrollable, destructive rampage if its environment is threatened. Dragonite will usually calm down and be satisfied after smashing down anything that has angered it to smithereens. It is known to engage in fierce battles withKingdra whenever they meet. Dragonite has been referred to as the "sea guardian" and the "Sea Incarnate"; as such, there are many ships with figureheads decorated with Dragonite's look.Drayden stated inThrash of the Titans! that Dragonite's power is capable of affecting the weather. InFiore, Dragonite used byPokémon Rangers to travel to different areas in the region, this flying service is called theDragonite Bus. Dragonite is very rare in the wild, typicallyliving near the sea. Some claim that there isan island somewhere in the ocean that only Dragonite inhabit.

InGeneration II, Dragonite and its pre-evolved forms were theonly known Pokémon capable of learning the moveOutrage, but other Pokémon could still inherit it viabreeding.

Forms

Mega Dragonite firing aHyper Beam from the pearl near the tip of its tail

Dragonite canMega Evolve into Mega Dragonite.

As Mega Dragonite, it gains features that are distinctive ofDragonair. Dragonite's antennae grows into large feathery wings on its head, which are light tan in color with white tips. These head wings function as feelers, while also allowing Mega Dragonite to fly.[2] Conversely, the wings on its back have shrunk and become purely teal. Feathery wing-like structures also sprout from Mega Dragonite's shoulders and legs. Mega Dragonite's tail is longer and has a multi-colored pearl near the tip; this pearl glows when Mega Dragonite performs certain attacks. Mega Dragonite's horn is white and now located on its forehead, and it has teal-green eyes. Its cream-colored underbelly no longer extends to its tail, and the numerous straight lines segmenting it are replaced with only five V-shaped ones.

Mega Dragonite's speed and strength have increased significantly from its regular form, but the process of Mega Evolution has also deluged its kindness and helpful nature. Its merciful nature makes it prefer to end matches quickly, smiling as it attacks its opponents with powerful techniques. Likewise, it will rush to help someone it senses to be in trouble, even while it isbattling.[2] As seen in thePokémon Horizons: The Series episodeFriends as Two, Me and You, Mega Dragonite can fire moves likeHyper Beam from the pearl near the tip of its tail. According to theMega Nidothing's Mega Mega! Mega Evolution short inBetter, Farther, Stronger!, Mega Dragonite possesses the power to blast throughmountains, causing significant destruction in the process.

Trivia

Cultural impact

The design of Dragonite has been compared by Chinese Pokémon fans to theMoomins, a Finnish story series. The phrase 快龍就是嚕嚕米Kuailong jiùshì Lǔlǔmǐ (lit. "Dragonite is Moomins") is a meme among Chinese fans, and was even shown on the side of theTaipei 101 during the 2023-24 New Year's Countdown in Taiwan.[3]

Origin

Dragonite's benevolent behavior and its description as the "guardian of the sea" may suggest inspiration fromChinese andJapanese dragons being portrayed as auspicious creatures with their power to control over water and weather. Its yellow coloration may allude to theYellow Dragon, commonly portrayed as the fifth symbol among theFour Auspicious Beast in Chinese mythology. Its wings may be a reference to theYinglong, a type of dragon in Chinese mythology that is commonly described to be winged.

Physically, Dragonite resembles a classicEuropean dragon, but its design also parallels giant monsters fromkaijū films.

Mega Dragonite's design incorporates features from its pre-EvolutionDragonair, namely the head wings and the pearl on its tail.[2] Its Shiny coloration also resembles Dragonair's standard colors. Its design may also invokeangels — the six wings Mega Dragonite gains upon Mega Evolving may reference theseraph, a type of angel described in the Christian Bible to have six wings, with two wings covering its face and two wings covering its feet.

Name origin

Dragonite may be a combination ofdragon andknight, night, ordraconite (a mythical stone said to be found in the heads of dragons and are pyramidal in shape, similar to Dragonite's horn).

Kairyu may be derived from 海竜kairyū (sea dragon). It may also involve 怪獣kaijū (monster), 快kai (cheerful), and 破壊hakai (destruction).
