TheDragon type (Japanese:ドラゴンタイプDragon type) is one of the eighteentypes. Dragon-typemoves are super effective against Dragon-typePokémon, while Dragon-type Pokémon are weak to Dragon-,Fairy-, andIce-type moves.

Interacting with the Dragon type
A Pokémon withProtean orLibero will become a Dragon-type Pokémon if it uses a Dragon-type move. A Pokémon withColor Change will become a Dragon-type Pokémon if it is hit with a Dragon-type move.

Pokémon Sleep
Unlike in the core series games, inPokémon Sleep, each Pokémon can only have one type, which determines the kind ofBerry that the Pokémon will gather forSnorlax to feed on. Dragon-type Pokémon will gatherYache Berries, and typically have the Dozingsleep type.

In the TCG
- Main article:Dragon (TCG)
Introduced in theDragon Vault set, previously many Pokémon in this set were listed asColorless-types. Dragon-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Dragon (prior to theXY expansion) orFairy (from XY toCosmic Eclipse) with no Resistances. Starting with theEvolving Skies expansion, all Dragon-type Pokémon in the TCG have no Weakness. Dragon-type Pokémon can be strong against other Dragon-types (prior to the XY expansion), and there are no types that resist them.
Dragon is one of two types to lack aBasic Energy card, and the only one where an Energy of the type simply does not exist within the rules. Dragon-types use other Energy types in the costs of their attacks instead, often having two different Energy types in the costs. Often, the types used are of the Pokémon's non-Dragon type, or those based on the Pokémon's body color.
Trivia
- Generation IX introduced the most Dragon-typePokémon of anygeneration, with fourteen, whileGeneration II introduced the fewest Dragon-type Pokémon, with only one,Kingdra.
- Generation VIII introduced the most Dragon-type moves of any generation, with nine, whileGeneration I introduced the fewest, with only one,Dragon Rage.
- The Dragon type is the onlytype for which a move was not introduced inGeneration VI. This is also the first instance of any generation not introducing a move for a type after that type's introduction.
- The Dragon type, tied with theFire type, also has the lowest number of non-damaging moves out of all of the types, with only three.
- On average, Dragon-type Pokémon have the highest baseHP,Special Attack, andSpeed of all types.
- The Dragon type is super effective against the least amount of types afterNormal, only being super effective against itself. Because of this, no Pokémon can have a double weakness to Dragon-type moves except for those who areFairy- andSteel-type inInverse Battles.
- The Dragon type is the only pre-Generation IV special type that does not resist itself (instead being weak to itself), unlikeFire,Water,Grass,Electric,Psychic,Ice andDark.
- InGeneration VI onwards, the Dragon type is tied with theGhost type for being the least resisted type, with both types being resisted by only one other type. So, it is impossible for a Pokémon to have a double resistance to Dragon.
- InGeneration I, there was no way to deal super effective Dragon-type damage, since Dragon Rage always deals 40 HP of damage. There was also no way to getSTAB from a Dragon-type move in Generation I for the same reason.
- No type resisted or was immune to the Dragon type, making it the only type to have ever had this distinction. However, because there were no Dragon-type moves that utilized thestandard damage formula in Generation I, this would be a moot point.
- The Dragon type is the most common type forpseudo-legendary Pokémon, with only two of them not being part-Dragon type (Metagross andTyranitar, although the latter has dragon-like characteristics and can learn Dragon-type moves). It is also the most common type amongversion mascots, with eleven Dragon-type Pokémon having served as mascots for twelve games of thecore series.
- Sinnoh is the only region without a notable Dragon-typespecialist.
- The Dragon type has the mostElite Four members of all types, with five.
- InGeneration III, all Dragon-type moves wereCool moves.
- Dragon-type moves have the mostheld items that boost their power: theDraco Plate,Dragon Fang,Dragon Gem, all threePokémon of myth orbs, and theSoul Dew (as of Generation VII).
- The Dragon type resists all three of the traditional primary types of core seriesfirst partner Pokémon:Grass,Fire, andWater. In addition, it resistsElectric, which was the type of theplayer's first Pokémon (Pikachu) inPokémon Yellow.
- Dragon has the mostMega Evolutions with 17.
- All Dragon-type moves are eligible to be used inSky Battles.
- Dragon andGhost share some characteristics. They both:
- originally had three Pokémon in Generation I, then gained only one more in Generation II.
- are the only types that are weak to themselves.
- have one type immune to them and one type resistant to them.
- The Dragon type is the only type to have all of its Pokémon introduced prior toGeneration IX obtainable inPokémon Sword and Shield, excluding Mega Evolutions andArceus holding aDraco Plate.
- The Dragon type and the idea of "dragons" are not always the same in thePokémon world, as some Pokémon which are not Dragon-type sometimes are referred to as dragons. This idea is further supported byLance'sPokémon Masters EX dialogue, stating that not all dragons are Dragon-type Pokémon.[1] Some non-Dragon-type Pokémon which have been referred to as dragons include:
- Charizard, in promotional materials and literature for theDragon Majesty TCG expansion;[2] and in theSuper Smash Bros. series. However Charizard can become part Dragon type byMega Evolving into Mega Charizard X using theCharizardite X.
- Horsea andSeadra, by theircategory of "Dragon Pokémon". However, Seadra'sEvolution,Kingdra, is a Dragon-type.
- Gyarados, by theHisui Pokédex;[3] and byLance inPokémon Masters EX.[1]
- Aerodactyl, by a man in thePewter Museum of Science.[4]
- Lugia, by a man inEcruteak City.[5]
- Iron Jugulis (implicitly, being a robotic version ofHydreigon).
- There is also aDragon Egg Group, which contains other draconic Pokémon that are not Dragon-type. HoweverSceptile, who is part of thisEgg Group, can become part Dragon type by Mega Evolving into Mega Sceptile using theSceptilite.
- Considering onlyPokémon Leagues with a fixedGym Leader order, more Leagues end with a Dragon-type Gym Leader than any other type, with three (Johto,UnovaBW andGalar).
- Including every Pokémon League, it is tied with theWater type, for this distinction (Hoenn,UnovaB2W2 andPaldea*).
- The Dragon type, along with theNormal type, deal non-neutral damage to the least types, those being three.
