Pokémon world locations

TheDragon's Den (Japanese:りゅうのあなDragon's Den) is a location inBlackthorn City in theJohtoregion.

In the games

The Dragon's Den is inaccessible before defeatingClair in theBlackthorn Gym, as it is blocked off by a man in front of the cave. After defeating Clair, it must be traversed to obtain theRising Badge.

InPokémon Crystal,HeartGold and SoulSilver, severalTrainers can be found in the cave. TheDragon Shrine (Japanese:りゅうのほこらDragonShrine) is located in the south end (blocked off by awhirlpool), where theMaster will quiz theplayer on their attitude towards and treatment of theirPokémon. After the quiz is completed, they will be rewarded with aDratini. If they got all the answers right the first time, the Dratini will knowExtremeSpeed.

Silver can be found here contemplating his training onTuesdays andThursdays. Clair will visit to reward the player with the Rising Badge she refused to award in the Blackthorn Gym, as well asTM24 (DragonBreath)GSC orTM59 (Dragon Pulse)HGSS. This requires completing the quiz described above. InPokémon Gold and Silver, where the Dragon Shrine is closed and everything related to it is unavailable, Clair will instead give the Rising Badge to the player after they collect theDragon Fang. If the Dragon Fang from Dragon's Den is not obtained, but the player has one anyways, usually from trading from another Trainer, Clair will call the player a cheater and refuse to give the badge.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, after the player battles Silver atMt. Moon, they can participate in aMulti Battle with him againstLance and Clair here. Additionally, in these games, if the player receives the Rising Badge from Clair and then leaves the Dragon's Den withDig,Teleport, or anEscape Rope, then they must return to her Gym in order to collect theTM.

Of note is thatPokémon Crystal's redesign of the Dragon's Den addedHeadbutt trees to the back of the Dragon Shrine. Despite this, noPokémon can be foundhiding in them. InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver's redesign, the Headbutt trees are absent, much like in its original design fromPokémon Gold and Silver.

Trivia

  • Dragon's Den is the only location where the player obtains aGym Badge that is not aGym.
  • InPokémon Crystal, if the playerwhites out due topoison damage while still inside the Dragon Shrine after receiving theRising Badge, they can return to theBlackthorn Gym to receive the rewardTM from Clair. However, if the player then returns to Dragon's Den and stands on the tile directly in front of the Dragon Shrine's door, Clair will appear again and give the player anotherTM24.
