It is:

Contents

Effect

In battle

The user digs underground and becomes immune to almost all moves during the first turn, known as asemi-invulnerable turn. On the following turn, Dig will do damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used.

Once Dig is selected, the user will not be able to switch out until the move is disrupted or fully executed. If Dig is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used.

If the user is holding aPower Herb, this item is consumed and Dig is executed in one turn.

During the semi-invulnerable turn, the user is also immune against damage fromsandstorm andhail.

Dig can be disrupted by fullparalysis, infatuation, or self-inflicted damage due toconfusion.

Some moves still work on a semi-invulnerable Pokémon:

A semi-invulnerable Pokémon can also be hit if either it or the Pokémon targeting it hasNo Guard or if it is under the effect ofLock-On orMind Reader.

IfMirror Move is used on a Pokémon that is currently on a semi-invulnerable turn, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using Dig (or fail if it cannot).

Instruct fails when used on a Pokémon whose last move was Dig.

Generation I

If the user is fully paralyzed during the mostly-invulnerable turn of Dig, the semi-invulnerable part will not be reset until the user switches out or fully executes Dig.

InPokémon Stadium, fullparalysis will reset the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig.Mirror Move will copy Dig on either of the turns it takes to execute.

Pokémon can becaught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dig.

Dig has a power of 100 in Generation I.

Generations II and III

Dig's powerchanged from 100 to 60 in Generation II.

In Generation II only, due to a glitch, whenLock-On orMind Reader are in effect, the movesAttract,Curse,Foresight,Mean Look,Mimic,Nightmare,Spider Web, andTransform cannot hit targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, and moves cannot lower stats of targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig (status moves such asString Shot will fail, andadditional effects of moves such asBubble will not activate).

Generation IV onwards

Dig's power changed from 60 to 80.

Pokémon can no longer becaught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dig.

Generation IX

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

The user cannot be targeted while underground, granting full immunity to attacks until the user surfaces.Earthquake cannot hit a target that is underground.

Outside of battle

Generation I

When used inside of a cave or certain buildings, theplayer is transported to the last Pokémon Center they healed at, or to their own house if they never healed at a Pokémon Center. NoBadge is required to use this move outside of battle.

Due to anoversight inPokémon Red and Blue, this can be used to escape from from theSea Cottage or theVermilion CityPokémon Fan Club. This was fixed inPokémon Yellow.

Generations II to VI

When used inside of a cave or certain buildings (includingGyms), theplayer is transported to the entrance they used to enter the cave or building.

Generation VII

Dig can no longer be used outside of battle.

Generation VIII

InPokémon Sword and Shield, Dig cannot be used outside of battle. InPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it is once again afield move and functions as it did in Generations II to VI.

Generation IX

Dig once again can no longer be used outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Dig gives the user thedigging status on the first turn. While the user is underground, the Pokémon cannot be hit by moves exceptEarthquake andMagnitude. Unlike the core series games,Fissure will not hit Pokémon in the digging status. Projectiles will also pass the user as if their tile was empty. On the second turn, the user attacks the enemy in front. In theRescue Team,Explorers andAdventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation.

This move can be used only on a land tile; it will fail if used on any other type of tile (including the shallow water in water dungeons; while the animation will play, the move will fail regardless). Due to being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Dig cannot be used in aPokémon Tower in theAdventure Squad series.

When used by agigantic Pokémon inSuper Mystery Dungeon, Dig hits 10 tiles away instead of 1 and also pierces through enemies and walls.
