Delphox is a bipedal, fox-likePokémon. It is covered in a coat of long fur that resembles a robe. This "robe" is primarily dark red with red-orange, flame-like markings near its knees. There is also a thin tuft of white fur on its torso, which is flanked by yellow fur draping down from its shoulders. Its forearms feature long red fur resembling sleeves, and its hands and feet are dark gray with three clawed fingers and toes, respectively. A tail covered in yellow fur protrudes from its "robe". Its head is yellow with longer white fur on its cheeks. It has red eyes and a slender snout with a pinkish nose. Three tufts of red-orange fur protrude out of each ear. When its mouth is open, two pointed teeth can be seen on its upper jaw.
Delphox carries a stick that it uses like a magic wand. When in use, the tip is set alight, and when not in use, the stick is hidden away in its sleeve-like fur. Delphox gazes into the flame at the tip of its wand to achieve a focused state of mind that allows it to see into the future. It can use its psychic power to ensnare its enemies in a fiery vortex capable of reaching 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit (3,000 degrees Celsius).[1] Delphox uses the stick to leave burn marks on the ground. In ancient times, people used the shapes of Delphox's burn marks for divination.
As Mega Delphox, it more closely resembles a stereotypical witch on a broomstick. The ends of the flame-like fur in its ears have become darker, in addition to two long strips of black fur extending from the back of its head. The red fur of its "robe" and "sleeves" also take on a black gradient. The white fur on its chest and underside of its face have lengthened, resembling a long beard, while the yellow fur flanking its chest has receded. It sports a patch of flame-shaped red-orange fur on its forehead. Mega Delphox rides a large "broomstick", with a mass of flames serving as the broom's "head". It is flanked by two smaller flame-ended broomsticks that resemble a regular Delphox's fiery wand.
Mega Evolution has enhanced Mega Delphox's psychic abilities. Its fighting style consists of disorienting onlookers with its magic all the while remaining calm and collected, enabling it to deliver precise blows to dazzled opponents. The two lit branches that float beside it move by their own as if they were alive, but can be skillfully controlled by Mega Delphox, allowing it to coordinate moves with them and even combine their flames to the ones it spits from its mouth into a massive, all-consuming fireball.[2]
Delphox, the Fox Pokémon, and the final evolved form of Fennekin. When Delphox stares into the flame on the tip of its branch to achieve a focused state, it creates a white-hot spiral of fire with its psychic power.

Due to the absence of a thirdKalos-centeredcore series game, Delphox became the first fully evolved first partner Pokémon to be owned by an antagonist inPokémon Adventures.

In Japanese, the hiragana category "きつねポケモン" (Fox Pokémon) is shared by the evolutionary lines of Vulpix and Nickit, while the katakana version "キツネポケモン" (Fox Pokémon) is shared by Fennekin and its Evolutions.
Mega Delphox, Mega Chesnaught, and Mega Greninja were the last Mega Evolutions revealed before the release ofPokémon Legends: Z-A, along with Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y.
Origin
Delphox'sevolutionary line is based on a fox,[3] specifically resembling thefennec fox. It also shares characteristics withkitsune andkitsune-mochi,witches in Japanese folklore that inherit their powers from foxes. Additionally, the wand-like branch it utilizes for battles is likely a reference toEuropean witchcraft and robe-like fur and 'sleeves' derived frommages, while its prophetic abilities may be based onoracles. Delphox and its pre-Evolutions may also draw inspiration from the magecharacter class inrole-playing games, which uses various powerful magical spells to attack their opponents, while sacrificing brute physical strength.
Its witch-like characteristics and appearance, along with itsFire typing, are possible references to commonwitch-hunts that involved burning a victim for the accused practice of witchcraft.
Besides witches, Mega Delphox also appears to take inspiration from the general imagery of wizards with its long beard. The fire branch it rides upon is reminiscent of aflying broomstick.
