Deino (Japanese:モノズMonozu) is a dual-typeDark/DragonPokémon introduced inGeneration V.

Itevolves intoZweilous starting atlevel 50, which evolves intoHydreigon starting at level 64.

Biology

Deino is a small blue quadrupedalPokémon with black fur covering its head and neck, concealing everything but its mouth from view. The fur around its neck also has six purple spots encircling it, which resemble bruises. The hair on the top of its head takes the shape of a single small horn. It also has a short tail that appears to be bitten off. Deino's body is covered in wounds.

As Deino is blind, it figures out its surroundings by ramming and biting. It primarily lives in caves with abundant water sources but little food source, so it will eat anything that moves, and memorizes the scents of its favorite things that it has tasted. It has the vigor and energy to bite constantly, making it dangerous to approach without taking precautions. As seen in thePokémon the Series: Black & White episodeThe Lonely Deino!, it may rear up on its hind legs when happy.

Evolution

Deino evolves intoZweilous, which evolves intoHydreigon.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's Evolution in the games, refer toGame data→Evolution data.)

Trivia

  • Of all the Pokémon thatevolve by level alone, Deino evolves to itsfinal form starting at the highest level, evolving at level 64.
  • According to interviews withKen Sugimori inNintendo Dream, Deino and its evolutionary line were originally intended to have aspects oftanks. These Pokémon were scrapped until late in development, when they were revived and remade to be based onYamata no Orochi.[1]
  • Deino is the only Pokémon whose English name's letters are in alphabetical order.
  • Deino and Zweilous are the only Pokémon who haveHustle as their onlyAbility.

Origin

Deino resembles a juveniledragon orsauropod. Due to its blindness and the fact that it is only found near water in a cave, Deino may also be based on acave salamander.

Name origin

Deino may be a combination ofdino (short fordinosaur) andein oreins (German for one). It may also derive from δεινόςdeinos (Ancient Greek for terrible), which has been used for the names of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals such asDeinosuchus andDeinonychus. Deino is also the name of one of theGraeae, the three sisters in Greek mythology who shared one interchangeable eye, leaving two blind while one could see.

Monozu may be a combination ofmono- (prefix meaning one) and 頭zu (head).
