Trivia
- InPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum, the Bag sprite for the HM containing Defog is mistakenly that of aWater-type HM, rather than aFlying-type one.
- LikeFlash was in GenerationsI,II, andIII, Defog is not critical to the completion of the game, as a player can traverse foggy areas without using the move. However, unlike with dark caves requiring Flash to light them, foggy areas affect battles within them.
- In theanimated series,Gust andWhirlwind have sometimes been used in a similar manner to Defog.
- If a player teaches a Pokémon the move Defog by HM in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, and then trades it toPokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver, the Pokémon can be freely imported toPokémon Black or White via thePoké Transfer, due to Defog not being needed outside of battle in HeartGold and SoulSilver. The same can be done withWhirlpool by transferring a Pokémon that learned it by HM in HeartGold or SoulSilver to Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum.
- Despite being able to learn Defog in previous generations,Charizard,Ledian, theTorchic evolutionary line,Seedot,Nuzleaf,Volbeat,Illumise, theSwablu evolutionary line,Castform,Chimecho,Rayquaza,Carnivine, andRotom are all unable to learn Defog inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- Kartana's ability to learn Defog might be a reference toorigamipinwheels, as Kartana itself is based on origami.
