TheDarkinium Z (Japanese:アクＺEvil Z) is a type ofZ-Crystal introduced inPokémon Sun and Moon. It is thetype-specific Z-Crystal associated with theDark type and allows Pokémon to upgrade their Dark-type moves toZ-Moves.

Allows the holder to upgrade itsDark-type damaging moves to theZ-Move Black Hole Eclipse or upgrade its Dark-typestatus moves into Z-Moves.

Unaffected by item negating effects (such asEmbargo andKlutz). Item manipulating effects (such asTrick andFling) cannot remove a Z-Crystal from a Pokémon.

Multitype changes anArceus holding this item to its Dark-typeform.Rayquaza cannotMega Evolve if it holds a Z-Crystal.

Outside of battle

A held Darkinium Z is automatically removed if the Pokémon istraded between players.

Team Rocket obtained a Darkinium Z inA Team-on-Team Tussle!, which someTeam Skull Grunts also tried to obtain from a nest ofAlolan Rattata andRaticate, with one of the Raticate being aTotem Pokémon. The sameZ-Crystal reappeared inActing True to Form!;Jessie andJames believed that they could use it with theAlolan Meowth they had just met, but discovered that they needed aZ-Ring to do so. They were finally able to performBlack Hole Eclipse withJames's Mareanie inWhy Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime? after obtaining aZ-Power Ring fromNanu. When Team Rocket left Alola inThank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, they left their Z-Power Ring behind, along with their Darkinium Z.

Nanu used a Darkinium Z inGuiding an Awakening! to have hisAlolan Persian perform Black Hole Eclipse during hisgrand trial battle againstAsh. After Ash defeated Nanu, Nanu contemplated giving Ash a Darkinium Z as a prize, but then quickly decided to give him aLycanium Z instead.

A full set oftype-specific Z-Crystals, including the Darkinium Z, appeared inA Grand Debut!, whereHapu allowed Ash to choose his grand trial prize from them.

A full set of replicas of the type-specific Z-Crystals, including the Darkinium Z, also appeared inA Team-on-Team Tussle!, where they were shown to Ash andhis classmates byProfessor Kukui.
