DJ Mary (Japanese:クルミKurumi) is aDJ inGoldenrod Radio Tower. She co-hosts the famous radio program,Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk, withProfessor Oak.
In the core series games
Mary is a famous celebrity in both theJohto andKantoregions. Due to her popularity, many people travel from Kanto to Johto to listen to her show. She can be found at theGoldenrod Radio Tower, where she also winds up as one ofTeam Rocket's hostages when the organization invades the tower. Once Team Rocket is defeated, she will thank theplayer with aPink BowGSC/BrightPowderHGSS. After the player has defeatedLance at theIndigo Plateau, Mary will show up with Professor Oak, attempting to interview the player before Lance takes them to theHall of Fame.
According to the player'sPokégear calls withBuena, Mary has a weight problem. Despite not being aTrainer, Mary hascaught one Pokémon,Drowzee, but since it was always making her drowsy, shetraded it with one of her fans for aMeowth.

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver
DJ Mary debuted inAir Time!, where she was first seen at theGoldenrod Radio Tower.Ash appeared on her show to talk about his Pokémon and his aspirations. She was due to narrate the next radio segment, a drama series, butTeam Rocket had earlier destroyed the radio station's tape reels. Team Rocket, disguised as theDugtrio Trio, and Ash's group helped fill in the voice actor roles while DJ Mary narrated the radio drama about "Prince Goldenrod". She was forced to improvise after Team Rocket added their own twists to the script, but she managed to tie everything together.
InWill the Real Oak Please Stand Up?, DJ Mary andProfessor Oak were going to do a live show inMaroon Town, but Team Rocket got wind of this and disguised themselves as Oak and Mary. With the help ofNurse Joy, a quiz show determined who was the real Oak and DJ Mary.
Pokémon Chronicles
InOaknapped!, DJ Mary informedTracey that Oak disappeared before he could tape a segment for her show. Tracey andRitchie later caught up with her andOfficer Jenny atSeafoam Island's TV station. Together, they located Oak and defeated his kidnappers,Butch andCassidy.

DJ Mary is well known for her celebrity interviews and radio segments, which are broadcast across theKanto andJohtoregions. She is good friends withProfessor Oak and often works with him. She is also a celebrity in her own right and has her own fan-club.
DJ Mary worries about her broadcast schedules, though she is composed and upbeat during her performances. She is quick-thinking and can easily go impromptu during a radio interview, as seen inAir Time!, when she noticedAsh's overwhelming nervousness.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc
Mary is first seen hosting a radio show whenGold, a fan of hers, bursts into the recording session. Gold reveals that Mary'sSmeargle, Smea-Smea, painted his face earlier and wishes to have his revenge on it. Gold's anger leads into an argument withWhitney, who was the one who gave Smea-Smea to Mary in the first place. After the argument gets good ratings for the show, theRadio Director, Hirō, decides to market it by organizing a race with Gold and Whitney as the competitors. Although confused at the whole situation, Mary acts as one of the hosts covering the event.
Later, Mary joins Whitney, Hirō, and thePokémon Association Chairman in traveling to theMahogany Gym in order to warnPryce ofSuicune, which had been challenging all of theGym Leaders inJohto.
At theIndigo Plateau, Mary appears as one of hosts of the Pokémon League. She gets caught up in theMasked Man's attack of the League with his army of mind-controlledTeam Rocket Grunts. With Smea-Smea'sFire-type attacks that it copied fromEntei, Mary helps stop one of the Masked Man's ice dolls permanently. After the Masked Man was defeated, Mary returned to her life as a radio show host.
Emerald arc
InEpilogue, Mary appears as one of the people that came to visit theBattle Frontier as a result ofScott wishing onJirachi.
HeartGold & SoulSilver arc
Mary appears as a commentator at thePokéathlon. There, she meets with Gold again, who had come to compete.

Smea-Smea (Japanese:ドブルくんDoble-kun) is Mary's only known Pokémon. It was given to Mary from her friend,Whitney. It first appeared subjecting Gold to a prank while he was sleeping by using its tail to draw over his face. Gold subsequently chased after Smea-Smea all the way to Goldenrod's Radio Tower, where he found out that it belonged to Whitney and DJ Mary. Smea-Smea appeared again along with Mary while Whitney was battling againstPryce'sSuicune ice sculpture. During the final battle against theMasked Man, Smea-Smea was seen mimickingEntei's flames via its Sketch, making it capable of permanently melting the Masked Man's re-freezing ice. In theHeartGold & SoulSilver arc, Smea-Smea was revealed to have been returned to Whitney.
Smea-Smea's only known move isSketch.

DJ Mary appears inLet's Use Fighting Type Pokémon!!. In the English translation, she is still referred to by her Japanese name, Kurumi. She hosts a Pokémon tournament organized by thePokémon Day Care.

DJ Mary appears inShowdown at the Radio Tower!!. She ends up becoming a hostage ofGiovanni's during his takeover of the Radio Tower. She is rescued byRed and his Pokémon in the end.
