TheCrystal Pool (Japanese:てらす池Illuminating Pool) is a large pool located atOni Mountain summit in the center ofKitakami. It is one of theSix Wonders of Kitakami.

Origin

The Crystal Pool ofKitakami directly reflects the Terastal phenomenon found inPaldea. Its plaque notes it was "infused with crystalline material from an unknown source." Briar's research reveals that "the Crystal Pool's waters emit energy of the same wavelength as Terastal energy."

Kitakami folklore aboutOgerpon deepens this connection. A man journeyed to Kitakami from a distant land alongside Ogerpon and brought with him gems from somewhere far away. Because their appearance was considered unusual for the standards of Kitakami, they lived apart from the village, settling in a den insideOni Mountain, the very mountain where the Crystal Pool is located. The village mask-maker then crafted four masks using these gems, enabling the pair to blend in during the village festival. This origin implies that the Terastal crystals found their way to Kitakami through human agency. Moreover, the presence ofGlimmora, a species otherwise exclusive toArea Zero, at the Crystal Pool reinforces its role as a mini–Area Zero.

In conclusion, the most likely origin of the Crystal Pool lies in the arrival of foreign gems, arguably Terastal crystals from Paldea. Brought to Kitakami in ancient times and infused into the pool, they seeded the waters withTerastal energy, transforming it into a secondary hotspot that mirrors the properties of Paldea's Area Zero.

Geography

The Crystal Pool is an area at the top ofOni Mountain. A small, man-made bridge has been built around a longer strip of water. Glowing crystals, like the ones found inArea Zero can be found at the bottom of the pool, rising upwards to the surface. When travelling there withCarmine, during the events ofThe Teal Mask, she mentions a rumor about the Crystal Pool where you can happen to meet people here who have passed away.Briar refers to the area as "sacred ground" upon her arrival. According to her, the crystals emit energy of the same wavelength asTerastal energy. She doesn't understand why this is the case, but hopes to figure that out to stabilize theTerastal phenomenon in regions other thanPaldea. After Carmine leaves, Briar also mentions that her research here could bring her one step closer toTerapagos, suggesting the Pokémon and the area itself may be related.

SparklingCrystal Clusters can be found within the pool, with the player receiving one after being attacked by aMilotic during the events of The Teal Mask.

On the far side of the area, there's a small hole beneath the ground that the player can enter. It will take them to an underground lake beneath the river, where Pokémon such as Feebas may spawn.

Following the events ofThe Indigo Disk, a strange mist will appear at the Crystal Pool when the player returns there. The player must haveTerapagos either in theirparty orPokémon Storage System for the cutscene to activate. The player, as well asKoraidon^S/Miraidon^V, is then able to meet the real Professor Sada^S/Turo^V from some point in space-time, who has not yet completed their time machine. After a brief conversation implying that Paradox Pokémon come from parallel timelines, the player will be prompted to exchangeBriar's Book for the Scarlet^S/Violet^V Book. The player cannot deny the request made by Sada^S/Turo^V to trade books. Following this scene, the player will be returned to a permanently differentmain menu, where the Book will be visible again, featuring a new arrangement of the main Pokémon theme.

Even before this point, the player is able to read theProfessor's notes in theArea Zero Underdepths, noting that they received a white book from a child in an eastern land. Since the Professor doesn't seem to have given Koraidon^S/Miraidon^V their name yet at this point in their life, (referring to them as theWinged King^S/Iron Serpent^V) it is implied that this encounter inadvertently triggered abootstrap paradox by telling them what their Legendary Pokémon was called and inspiring the Professor to continue their research on Area Zero or possibly creating an AI, if the player references it in their dialogue.

Talking toArven in his dorm at the Academy (provided the player has formedclose bonds with him) reveals different dialogue about the location of the book as a result of this interaction.

Special encounters

AfterKieran and Carmine's grandpa offers to fixOgerpon's mask, the player and Carmine head to the Crystal Pool to obtain aCrystal Cluster, where aMilotic ambushes them. Milotic's stats are different if the player has not yet finishedThe Way Home, but it always has 20IVs in each stat. It cannot be caught, and is coded to never beShiny.

After it is defeated, it drops aCrystal Cluster.

The Crystal Pool was first mentioned inRoy is Crocalor, and Crocalor is Roy!, whereCarmine revealed thatBriar was currently there. InEncounters at the Crystal Pool,Liko,Roy,Dot, andFriede arrived there and met Briar following a briefbattle against aTerastallized Milotic. TheRising Volt Tacklers members subsequently shared with Briar what they knew aboutTerapagos, and Briar, in return, shared with them the story of her ancestor,Heath, and her research into Terapagos. After nightfall, they visited the shore of the Crystal Pool in the hopes that the legend about the place allowing one to meet those who have died was true and they'd be able to meetLucius. However, nothing happened, so the group left Briar's camp the next morning.

InThe Three Explorers, Liko, Roy, Dot, and Friede returned to the Crystal Pool alongsideDiana, hoping to learn more about one of Lucius's fellow adventurers,Rystal. This time, the pond's rumored power worked and brought Rystal in front of them, along with her baby. From her they learned thatTerapagos had originally been her partner Pokémon. When she referred to her baby asLayla, Dianne identified it as the name of her mother. Rystal then revealed that Layla was the daughter of her and Lucius, meaning that Liko was Lucius's direct descendant, much to her shock. Inthe following episode, Rystal told everyone how the originalExplorers, which consisted of her, Lucius, andGibeon, had discovered theLaqua paradise and what they had experienced there. Just before she and Layla disappeared back into the past, Rystal told Liko to take care of Terapagos. As such, Terapagos subsequently requested to becaught by Liko, which she happily agreed to.

Trivia

The overall layout of the Crystal Pool resembles a smaller version ofArea Zero, with the location resembling a crater surrounded by a ring of jagged mountain-like rocks, akin to theGreat Crater of Paldea, and containing a lower subsurface area in the center filled with crystals, similar to Area Zero's depths.
Although it is never shown to the player in-game, theMilotic in Crystal Pool's special encounter is programmed to have aGhostTera Type, which may be a reference to the fact that the Crystal Pool can allow one to meet the dead.
- Incidentally, inPokémon Horizons: The Series, the Milotic that appears out of the Crystal Pool does Terastallize into a Ghost Tera Type.
