Crobat hanging upside-down with their wings folded
Crobat is a purple, chiropteranPokémon with a small, round body. It has long, pointed ears, yellow eyes with red pupils, and a small mouth that usually has its teeth bared. On its body are two pairs of wings: an upper pair that is slightly larger and a lower pair that developed from its hind legs. Both pairs have green-blue membranes, but the lower pair's membranes are only visible from the back. The upper wings have two claw-like fingers near the middle. On the bottom of its body are what appear to be a pair of stubby feet or tufts of fur.
Crobat is capable of flying long distances by alternating between its two sets of wings. The extra set of wings has also improved its flight speed without sacrificing its ability to fly silently. It can also travel through cramped caves without ever slowing. The combination of silent flight and sharp fangs allows it to bite down on prey without being noticed and drain their blood. If unable to consume blood, it becomes lethargic and unable to fly. Due to its lack of legs, it is clumsy on the ground and only able to crawl around with its wings. Crobat is rarely found in the wild, though it is typically found incaves or on tree branches, where it hangs upside-down by its rear wings. It is a nocturnal Pokémon.
Evolution
Crobat evolves fromGolbat and is the final form ofZubat.
It flies so silently through the dark on its four wings that it may not be noticed even when nearby.(Pokémon Red, Silver, or Crystal inserted) The development of wings on its legs enables it to fly fast but also makes it tough to stop and rest.(Pokémon Blue, Gold, or Yellow inserted)
If thisPokémon is flying by fluttering only a pair of wings on either the forelegs or hind legs, it's proof thatCrobat has been flying a long distance. It switches the wings it uses if it is tired.
Crobat sneaks up on its intended prey using wings that barely make a sound. ThisPokémon rests by hanging on a tree branch with its rear legs that serve as wings.
Over the course of evolution, its hind legs turned into wings. By alternately resting its front and rear wings, it can fly all day without having to stop.

Its hind limbs have become another set of wings. Crobat expertly maneuvers its four wings to dart in exquisite fashion through even the most confined caves without losing any speed.
Sure, Crobat’s a speedy flier, but I hope you also noticed how quiet its four wings are! It sometimes lands to rest, but it’s not very good at walking.
InControl Freak!,Brock's Crobat evolved from his Golbat, thus also marking the species' debut. After theJohto saga, he gave it to his younger brotherForrest but has since reclaimed it.

Pokémon Adventures
Crobat debuted inCrossing Crobat, whereJanine used one tobattleSuicune. After Suicune countered its first attack, Janine ordered Crobat to useDouble Team. Suicune was able to see through this as well, however, due to the shadow cast by the real Crobat and Janine, and Crobat was frozen.
A Bat Pokémon that evolves fromGolbat, Crobat's hind legs have evolved into a second pair of wings, which allows it to fly at great speeds but limits its ability to rest. The affection a Golbat has for itsTrainer is vital for the evolution process: if a novice Trainer has a Crobat, it shows that he or she cares for Pokémon well.
Trivia
Prior to its debut, Crobat's cry existed inPokemon Red/Blue's files and is one of the possible cries forMissingno.

Crobat's evolutionary line has several similarities withSwoobat's. All of the members of both lines are based on bats and reach their respective final evolved form byfriendship.
Although Crobat's Pokédex entries imply that its only pair of hindlegs have developed into wings, Crobat is sometimes depicted with an additional pair of tiny legs/feet.
Origin
Crobat seems to be based on abat, particularlyvampire bats, which bite other animals tofeed on their blood. It may also be inspired by mythologicalvampires. Its extra set of wings may be based on the fact that a bat's front legs and hindlegs are connected by theirpatagium, essentially incorporating all of their limbs into their wings. Its very highSpeed stat may be based on theMexican free-tailed bat, which purportedly has the fastest horizontal flight speed of any animal. ItsPoison type may be inspired by either theanticoagulant properties of vampire bat saliva or the fact that bats are infamous for spreading deadly diseases such asrabies.
Name origin
Crobat may be a combination ofcross andbat. It may also involveacrobat (referring to its agility in the air).
