Reason: Can Metal Powder, Eviolite, or Marvel Scale decrease confusion damage?

Confusion causes a Pokémon to sometimes attack itself instead of executing the selected move for a random 2-5 turns. This includes attempting to useSnore orSleep Talk whileasleep, as well as moving again viaInstruct. On the final turn of confusion, a Pokémon will snap out of its confusion and attack normally. Like all other volatile status conditions, confusion wears off when the confused Pokémon is taken out of battle or a battle is over.

Turns spent recharging (such as after usingHyper Beam) and turns in which the Pokémon is unable to attack due tosleep, freeze, orflinching will not lower the remaining number of turns of confusion. Pokémon may hurt themselves in confusion during either turn of multi-turn moves such asFly andDive. When a Pokémon is unable to attack for other reasons (such as from beingasleep or fullyparalyzed), it will not hurt itself in confusion.

Confusiondamage is calculated as if it were atypelessphysical move with apower of 40; it cannot score acritical hit, and does not receiveSTAB. Confusion damage is unaffected byWonder Guard,Technician, and a heldLife Orb.Badges affect confusion damage when they boost the user's physical Attack or Defense. Other things may affect confusion's damage depending on the game, as detailed in the table below.

Damage factorGeneration
IIIIIIIVV+
Randomdamage factor like normal moves
Damage halved byburn
Defense halved ifExplosion orSelfdestruct was selected to be used
Defense doubled from opponent'sReflect
Defense doubled from ownReflect
Power boosted by 10% if the user holds atype-enhancing item and a move of that type was originally selected
Power boosted by 50% ifHelping Hand is in effect
Power boosted by 10%/20% if the user holds aSilk Scarf
Attack boosted byChoice Band, and possiblyThick Club orLight Ball
Attack or power boosted byAttack-increasing Abilities
Stat modifications caused byPower Trick,Power Split, orGuard Split
Power boosted by 25% if the user hasRivalry and is notgender unknown

In addition, one of the possible outcomes fromdisobedience is that a Pokémon can appear to hit itself in confusion. This behaves the same way as actually being confused, except that it doesn't linger beyond the turn, and in Generation IV,Technician applies (increasing the power to 60) if the Pokémon has that Ability.

Confusion is transferred byBaton Pass.

Generation I

During confusion, Pokémon have a 50% chance to damage themselves instead of executing the selected move.

Generation II

TheFocus Band cannot prevent a Pokémon from knocking itself out due to confusion.

Generation III

Focus Band can now prevent a Pokémon from knocking itself out due to confusion.

Generation IV

Focus Sash can also prevent a Pokémon from knocking itself out due to confusion.

In this generation only, due to anoversight, if a confused Pokémon has usedRage and then selects a different move, it will snap out of confusion, but its rage will still be building.

Generations V and VI

Sturdy now prevents a Pokémon from knocking itself out due to confusion if it had full health beforehand.

Generation VII onward

Pokémon now have a 33% chance to damage themselves during confusion.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

InPokémon Legends: Z-A, confusion causes Pokémon to move irregularly on the battlefield.

Other causes

An activatingAguav Berry,Figy Berry,Iapapa Berry,Mago Berry, andWiki Berry may confuse the holder if they dislike a specificflavor. After fully executingThrash,Petal Dance,Outrage, orRaging Fury, the user becomes confused due to fatigue or, only inPokémon Legends: Arceus, becomes fixated on using the move.Pecharunt's signature AbilityPoison Puppeteer causes Pokémonpoisoned by its moves to also become confused. TheBerserk Gene confuses the holder upon activation for a duration of 256 turns. Instead of obeying a command, adisobedient Pokémon may sometimes hurt itself in confusion, inflicting confusion damage to itself.

Curing

In Generation I only, usingHaze cures confusion for both active Pokémon.

Confusion-healing items

These are the items that only heal confusion.

Status-healing items

Starting from Generation II, confusion is the only volatile status condition that is able to be cured by items that heal all non-volatile status conditions. TheFull Heal andFull Restore were introduced inGeneration I, but only gained the ability to cure confusion in Generation II.

TheRage Candy Bar was introduced inGeneration II, but its effect to cure status conditions was introduced inGeneration VII.

These are the items that cure confusion as well as all non-volatile status conditions.

Prevention

Pokémon with theOwn Tempo Ability are immune to being confused.

The moveSafeguard will protect the party from status conditions for five turns. Starting inGeneration VII, whileMisty Terrain is present, grounded Pokémon cannot become confused. A Pokémon behind asubstitute cannot usually become confused; however, it can become confused by damaging moves' side effects in Generation I, byBerserk Gene in Generation II, or byconfusion-inducing Berries in Generation III.

Advantages

Moves used against confused Pokémon with the AbilityTangled Feet will have theiraccuracy halved.

In the spin-off games

Mystery Dungeon series

The Pokémon will move in a random direction, and turn in a random direction before attacking. However, thrown items will still travel in the desired direction. Allies are treated as foes (except inGates to Infinity), unless the Pokémon has the NontraitorIQ skillRBTDS or is holding alooplet with the Self ControlemeraSMD. For example, if the Pokémon uses moves such asSweet Scent orEarth Power, teammates will be affected, and moves likeAgility will also benefit the opposing side. The Pokémon may not switch places with the team leader*.

Confusion lasts 7-12 turnsRBTDS or 8 turnsGtISMD. Other than as an effect of moves, it can be caused by aTotter Orb,Totter Seed, Dizzying Payback and Dizzying Stareemera,Spin Trap, orstepping on a disguisedDittoSMD.

Confusion can be protected against by wearing aPersim Band.

Pokémon Conquest

InPokémon Conquest, confusion is a non-volatile status. At the beginning of a turn, A confused Pokémon has a 50% chance to randomly move on its own and attack other Pokémon, including allies. If a Pokémon moves in its confusion, theWarrior is prevented from using an item or activating aWarrior Skill that turn. Confusion may wear off in the first turn.

In the TCG

In theTrading Card Game, Confusion, calledConfused, is one of the fiveSpecial Conditions along withPoisoned,Burned,Asleep, andParalyzed. Of them, Confused is the only one where nothing occurs duringPokémon Checkup. Confused's effect was changed with the release ofEX Ruby & Sapphire.

In its original incarnation, if a Pokémon is Confused, its card is turned upside-down. If that Pokémon tries toattack, the player must flip acoin. If the coin is heads, the attack proceeds as planned. However, if the coin lands on tails, the attack is not used.[1] Instead, the Pokémon attacks itself for 20 damage. This is affected by Weakness and Resistance. Additionally, if a Pokémon tries toretreat, it had to discard the energy cards before flipping a coin to see if the retreat was successful. If heads, the Pokémon retreated as normal, if tails, the energy cards were wasted and the Pokémon stayed in play.

Pokémon recover from Confused when they move to theBench in some manner, if the Pokémon is inflicted with Asleep or Paralyzed (which are mutually exclusive with each other and Confused), or if another effect directly cures Confused.

Starting with EX Ruby & Sapphire, Confused no longer puts any restrictions on retreating. The effect for getting tails on a coin flip caused by attacking while Confused was changed. The player now puts 3 damage counters on the Pokémon that attempted the attack. There are alsocards that change the number of damage counters to be put on a Confused Pokémon.
