Captain Stern (Japanese:クスノキ館長Director Kusunoki) is an oceanographer who lives inSlateport City.

In the games

Due to his occupation, Captain Stern is responsible for a lot of the town's livelihood. He constructed theS.S. Tidal, a ship transporting people to and fromLilycove City and Slateport City. He also built theOceanic Museum, and runsStern's Shipyard.

He ordered theDevon Goods/Parts fromRustboro City.Team Magma orTeam Aqua will threaten him in the Oceanic Museum to try to recover the Devon Goods, which are plans for a new submarine engine for Stern's next project —Submarine Explorer 1.

After gaining access to the HMsDive andSurf, the player can go to theAbandoned Ship^RSE/Sea Mauville^ORAS in hopes of finding aScanner. ForRuby, Sapphire, andEmerald, in exchange for that item, Captain Stern will offer either aDeepSeaScale orDeepSeaTooth in return, both of which are required forClamperl to evolve intoGorebyss andHuntail, respectively. InOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Captain Stern instead gives the player theClear Bell^OR orTidal Bell^AS, which is required to encounterHo-Oh^OR orLugia^AS on Sea Mauville.

History

Captain Stern's appears in thePokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire episodeThe Spheal of Approval. He is the curator ofSlateport'sOceanic Museum, a marine biologist and runs alocal shipbuilding business.

He was introduced toAsh andMax when his young friendMarius battled them and lost. Captain Stern stepped in and mentioned he had been looking for Marius before taking the boys on a guided tour of the museum. The museum had many sculptures ofWater-type Pokémon and models of submarines. Captain Stern also showed off his latest find, a volcanic rock formed by underwater volcanoes, supposedly created by theLegendary Pokémon,Groudon.

While the kids went to go get snow cones, members ofTeam Magma broke into the museum and stole the stone. Ash helped Captain Stern handleTabitha and his accomplice grunts while Max and Marius were ordered to alertOfficer Jenny to the situation. Ash managed to gain possession of the case, but soon dropped it trying to avoid aShadow Ball from aMightyena. As a result the stone broke into two pieces, and Team Magma fled with the larger portion. Later, Ash apologized to Captain Stern for letting Team Magma escape, but Stern was grateful to just keep half of the stone so he could study it.

Captain Stern sent outSealeo to take care ofTeam Magma. It battled with their threeMightyena by teaming up withAsh's Pikachu andCorphish. When Captain Stern told Ash to take the briefcase with him, Sealeo continued the battle on its own by distracting all but one of the members.

Sealeo's known moves areAurora Beam andBlizzard.

Pokémon Adventures

In thePokémon Adventuresmanga, Captain Stern appears in a supporting role.Ruby came to Slateport to enter aPokémon Contest whenTeam Magma attacked, looking for Captain Stern. They kidnapped Stern, Ruby, thePokémon Fan Club Chairman, andDock.

Team Magma wanted to use Submarine Explorer 1 to reach theSeafloor Cavern, the deepest part of Hoenn's ocean. However, a special starter developed by theDevon Corporation and transported in the Devon Goods was needed. Ruby saved Captain Stern but ended up drifting away in the submarine. During the conflict, Stern ended up being poisoned by aTorkoal.

Later, Captain Stern was able to informNorman, andGabby and Ty of Ruby's location.

WhenKyogre flooded half of Hoenn, Stern helped evacuate the people of Slateport into ships, including theS.S. Tidal.

Captain Stern is apparently friends with bothSteven Stone andWallace.

He later appears inSwampert Smashes, where he and Dock were seen watching the news about themeteor that was about to hit the planet in several days.
