Briar (Japanese:ブライアBriar) is a character introduced inThe Teal Mask inPokémon Scarlet and Violet. She is a teacher atBlueberry Academy, the descendant of historianHeath, and also the one in possession of the originalScarlet BookS/Violet BookV.

In the core series games

Briar first appears after the Treasure Hunt main story starts. The player learns that Briar is a descendant ofHeath, the author of theScarlet BookS/Violet BookV.[1] She owns the original copy of the book, which contains unredacted information on the PokémonTerapagos.[2] As Heath was discredited for his writings in the book, Briar seeks to find Terapagos to prove Heath's theories correct. While waiting for her request to enterArea Zero to be approved, she leads theplayer and several other students on a class trip toKitakami.

DuringThe Teal Mask story, Briar does research on the land whileCarmine,Kieran, the player, and other students explore Kitakami. Briar appears atCrystal Pool after the player and Carmine defeats aMilotic. She explains that the crystals found in Kitakami emit energy similar toTerastal energy found inPaldea. Briar believes she can find a way to use theTerastal phenomenon usable outside of Paldea, bringing her closer to finding Terapagos. After the player defeats Carmine at Loyalty Plaza, Briar calls Carmine and the player to meet up in the community center. Briar reveals that she, Carmine, and Kieran are returning toBlueberry Academy earlier due to a development at theGreat Crater of Paldea. Due to this, the trip to Kitakami ends earlier. Between the end of The Teal Mask andThe Indigo Disk, Briar has traveled to many different regions with Carmine assisting her. Eventually, she was able to create a special "Terarium Core" that hung on the top of theTerarium, allowing Terstalization to occur in Blueberry Academy.

Briar returns inThe Indigo Disk after the player defeats Kieran. She later was permitted byGeeta to finally start a new expedition to Area Zero alongside the player,Kieran, andCarmine. During the trip, she discovers theArea Zero Underdepths and the 19th Tera Type,Stellar-type. After reaching the deepest part of the Area Zero Underdepths, she and Kieran awaken Terapagos. After Kieran captures Terapagos, she encourages him and the player to fight to see Terapagos's true power. After Kieran loses, Briar suggests he Terastallize Terapagos to see its full power. Upon seeing Terapagos Stellar Form, she declares this is the Hidden treasure of Area Zero. However, this causes Terapagos to lose control and cause havoc. She then watches the player, Carmine, and Kieran defeat Terapagos, resulting in the player's capturing of it. She then apologized for her reckless behavior and obsession. After returning to Blueberry Academy, she writes abook containing the information she learned from Area Zero. Upon talking to the player in Classroom 1-4, she apologizes and reveals that the player, Carmine, and Kieran'sTera Orbs have been powered up due to Terapagos, allowing them to Terastalize without the need to recharge. She then reveals thata man in a blue suit was waiting to meet the player at the academy's entrance. She then leaves to meet her publisher and asks to see Terapagos when she meets the player again.

Pokémon animated series

Pre-series

At some point in the past, Briar alongside Carmine encountered aTerapagos, capable of using theStellar-type form. This encounter led to Briar becoming a expert for this species of Pokémon.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Briar was first mentioned inInto a New Sky! The Brave Olivine!,Raifort indicated thatLiko,Roy, andDot needed to meet her because of their current research onTerapagos.

InRoy is Crocalor, and Crocalor is Roy!, it was revealed by her studentCarmine, that Briar was at theCrystal Pool. InEncounters at the Crystal Pool, Briar metFriede, Liko, Roy and Dot at the Crystal Pool, she immediately wanted to studyTerapagos upon seeing it, and with the group she soon discussed information on Terapagos, its forms, andArea Zero. Briar additionally started talking about her ancestorHeath's discoveries and research regarding Area Zero, which she intended to prove to be true despite them having been publicly dismissed as fiction. When Friede asked her information onLaquium, Briar had not heard of it before, but was nontheless interested in finding out more about it.

InEntei's Fierce Battle Cry!, Briar contacted theRising Volt Tacklers, informing them of the sighting ofa Pokémon resembling Entei made within Area Zero and asking them to meet her back atPaldea. InTotal-lie Awesome Pokémon in Area Zero?!, Briar met up with the Rising Volt Tacklers and showed them around Area Zero, before settling down for camp she informs Liko, Roy and Dot about the calls Scream Tail makes.

InThe Pillar of Fire, Briar witnessed the battle between the Rising Volt Tacklers and Lucius's "Entei". Upon witnessing its unusual appearance, its use ofBurning Bulwark, resistance to Water-type moves and further research into the Scarlet Book, she realized that Lucius's "Entei" was really a Gouging Fire. After the Rising Volt Tacklers pass Gouging Fire's test, Briar witnessed Gouging Fire showing off its memories and how it met Lucius, before going back into its Ancient Poké Ball.

InBeyond the Shining Rainbow, Briar witnessed Liko and the Rising Volt Tacklers' battle against Rayquaza. Initially, she was taking care of Terapagos, but when Liko's Tera Pokémon entered the battle, Briar witnessed the Pokémon's enormous power. At the end of the battle, Briar said goodbye to the group and said that everything she witnessed will help her in her personal research forher book.

Briar reappeared in a flashback inThe Pokémon Paradise of Laqua!.

A year later, inTaking the Next Steps, Briar was contacted by Liko to answer some questions, however Briar revealed that with the increasingly tight deadline for the delivery of her book, she was unable to respond at that moment and promised to contact Liko in the future.

Briar andPagogo

Some time later, inBetter, Farther, Stronger!, Briar returned Liko's call and revealed that she had completed her book, with the free time, she invited Liko and the other Rising Volt Tacklers to visit theBlueberry Academy.

InHZ115, Briar spoke with Liko and her friends viaRotom Phone, revealing that she couldn't meet with them because she was helping with maintenance on the Blueberry Academy's Terrarium. The following day, Briar and Carmine gathered Liko, Roy, Dot, andUlt to begin her studies at theStrong Sphere,Laquium, and especiallyTerapagos.

InHZ117, Briar contacted the Rising Volt Tacklers andPenny again to inquire about Pagogo's eating habits and personal details. During the meeting, Liko helped Briar with her research, much to Carmine's displeasure.

InHZ119, Briar reunited the group to present the partial results of her research. UsingDiana's andJacq's research and her own personal experience, Briar theorized that the Rising Volt Tacklers would need to gather alleighteen existingTera-types for Pagogo to be able to use his full power and thus end the Laquium existing on the planet. According to her, these eighteen types must come from Pokémon with strength comparable to that of theSix Heroes. After Roy's battle againstDrayton, Briar bid farewell to Pagogo and the Rising Volt Tacklers, asking to be updated on anything they might discover in the future.
