InEntranced by Entei, during the Gym Leaderexhibition match at theIndigo Plateau, Blue faced his former mentor,Chuck. During this battle, Blue decided to only use Rhydon. Rhydon first went up against Chuck'sMachamp, which let Rhydon hit first so that it could useVital Throw, which always makes the usergo last. Next, Chuck switched Machamp with hisHitmonlee, which usedMind Reader to dodge Rhydon's attacks. Rhydon managed to grab Hitmonlee's stretchy legs and attacked withStomp, only to be countered withReversal.
Chuck then switched Hitmonlee forHitmontop, which greatly damaged Rhydon with his ability to attack multiple times while spinning. Eventually, Chuck had Hitmontop attack from the air by using his horn as a drill. Rhydon countered with his ownHorn Drill and caused Hitmontop to slow down by reversing the rotation of his drill, leading to Hitmontop's defeat and Blue's victory. After the battle, Blue revealed he trained Rhydon to a high level with a book titledSecrets of the Earth, which was written bythe previous Viridian Gym Leader, who had been aGround-typespecialist.
InThe Last Battle IX, Blue had Rhydondig a tunnel toIlex Forest so that he andRed could help their allies confront theMasked Man. During the trip Rhydon had a quick battle againstKoga and hisTentacruel, but it was stopped when Koga revealed he wasn't there to fight.
InDouble Dealing with Deoxys, Rhydon participated in Blue's battle against Red to determine which one would learn one of the ultimate moves fromUltima. With hisLightning RodAbility, Rhydon redirected theElectric attacks fired byPika to prevent them from hittingMachamp, though the battle ended in a tie before he could play any further role.
InDon't Doubt Deoxys, Rhydon battledOrm and hisShuckle onSix Island. With his drills, Rhydon broke the horde of Shuckle Orm was using to keep Blue pinned down, and defeated Orm's Shuckle, which had been giving the horde orders.
InPhew for Mew, Blue gaveSilverSecrets of the Earth, telling him that the book suggested that Rhydon could evolve further and that theEvolution involvedtrading. Since trading was Silver's specialty, Blue tasked Silver with discovering the process. Shortly after this, Rhydon and Blue found themselves petrified bySird, along with the four otherPokédex holders and their Pokémon.
InThe Final Battle VII, Rhydon appeared alongside the rest of Blue's team when he was checking to make sure they all survived the petrification caused byMewtwo andDarkrai.
The Protector Rhydon used to evolveRhyperior while under Silver's ownership
InRaising the Stakes with Rhyperior, it was revealed that Blue and Silvertraded Pokémon. With theProtector he received from Silver, Rhydon evolved into a Rhyperior. Afterward, Blue then decided to give Rhyperior to Silver so that he may fill the missing slot in his party. Rhyperior was first seen with Silver battlingAriana onRoute 38. With anEarth Plate-boostedEarth Power, he distracted Ariana long enough for Silver to escape and head toEcruteak City to meet withMorty. When Silver arrived at theEcruteak Gym, he was stopped byFalkner,Bugsy, and Chuck, who were protecting the Gym from suspicious people under Morty's request. Having no time to explain the situation, Silver battled the three Gym Leaders in order to force his way into the Gym. Chuck used his Hitmontop to battle Rhyperior, but the two Pokémon stopped when their drills collided, both realizing that they had fought each other in the past. After Silver explained who Rhyperior originally belonged to, Chuck decided to trust Silver and allowed him into the Gym.
InAll About Arceus VIII, Rhyperior battledGiratina to protect Silver's father. Silver then revealed that he decoded Giovanni's book, which allowed him to teach RhyperiorRock Wrecker.
InPinsir Glares, it was revealed that Blue took Rhyperior back from Silver in order to help him findZygarde. Rhyperior was first seen helpingDiantha emerge from underground, where she was put in order to escape the blast of theultimate weapon. He, along withCharizard,later ledX's group toAnistar City. While doing so, they were admired byRhyrhy andSalamè. After exitingRoute 17, they left them and returned to Blue.
InYveltal Steals, Rhyperior tried to help suppress Mewtwo's rage at thePokémon Village alongside Charizard,Marisso, and Salamè. Despite their numbers, Mewtwo kept the advantage, easily knocking them away withPsywave.
Personality and characteristics
Rhyperior, like all ofBlue's Pokémon, is serious and determined. He has a high amount of loyalty to hisTrainer due to the amount of training he received and the care Blue gave him. Because of this training, Rhyperior is very powerful Pokémon and was the powerhouse of Silver's team when he was with him. Rhyperior has a tough exterior and can walk through magma of up to two thousand degrees without taking any damage. He has the ability to sense things underground, shown when he found a buriedDiantha.
