Bede (Japanese:ビートBeet[2]) is one of therival characters inPokémon Sword and Shield, the others beingHop andMarnie. He initiallyspecializes inPsychic-typePokémon, but is eventually scouted byOpal to succeed her as aFairy-typeGym Leader, and thus changes his specialty type accordingly. As the Gym Leader ofBallonlea Stadium, he gives theFairy Badge to Trainers who defeat him.

In the core series games

Bede is one of theplayer'srivals. He is an arrogant, rude young man who had been personally sponsored byRose, who gave Bede his first Pokémon, later revealed to be hisHatterene, upon visiting his orphanage when he was a child. The player andHop first meet him when signing up for the Gym Challenge, though his name is not revealed at the time. He is immediately dismissive of Hop and the player character, believing that his connection to the chairman gives him privilege. While he is competing in the Gym Challenge to becomeChampion, he has been gatheringWishing Stars in large quantities to help the Chairman realize his ambition. However, in his zealous pursuit of Wishing Stars, Bede brings harm to a historic landmark inStow-on-Side, and Rose disqualifies him from the Gym Challenge in disappointment.

After the player returns fromBallonlea toHammerlocke with theFairy Badge, Opal notices the sulking Bede and is struck with inspiration, asking him to become her successor. Bede reluctantly agrees, believing he will become stronger in the process. Bede eventually returns as aGym Leader, interrupting the finals of theChampion Cup and demanding to battle the player, staking his career on his victory. After losing, Bede, who had begun to regret accepting Opal's offer, reveals he was planning on using the result of the battle as an excuse to get away from his mentor. However, after hearing the crowd cheer him on despite his loss, he feels obligated to continue training, figuring he will be able to completely surpass Opal soon.

After the player becomesChampion, the player, Hop, and former Gym LeaderPiers head toBallonlea Stadium while trying to stopSordward andShielbert, but in the lobby, Bede confidently declares that he has taken care of most of theDynamax Pokémon running rampant in his Stadium already. The player's group attempts to leave, but Bede refuses to let them go until he has a battle with the new Champion. After some assurance from Opal, the group decides to indulge Bede. During the battle, Bede acknowledges the player's strength, and after being defeated, accepts them as Champion. A more humble Trainer now, Bede swears he'll overcome his weakness and, in his words, "reach the pinnacle of what Fairy types can do."

League Cards

This is a transcript of the back of Bede'sLeague Cards inPokémon Sword and Shield.

Normal League Card
"Bede spent some time living in an orphanage after his family ran into some trouble when he was young. He always had difficulty getting along with others and would constantly get into fights. That is until one dayRose visited the facility. Rose gave Bede a Pokémon, which changed Bede's life forever. He showed talent as aTrainer and threw himself intoPokémon battles, becoming stronger by the day. He has joined theGym Challenge with an endorsement from the chairman himself, and Bede plans to prove that the chairman's faith was not misplaced."
Rare League Card
"He was appointed by the formerGym LeaderOpal to become the newGym Leader ofBallonlea Stadium. The general consensus is that Opal's harsh training has in fact mellowed him out. Though he himself has never confirmed nor denied this, it should be noted that he no longer refuses to give autographs. Additionally, it seems his skills as a Pokémon Trainer have also increased rather dramatically. Recently, his intrusion during the Finals of the Champion Cup has gained popularity, and fans wish to see that kind of performance again. Bede himself is not sure how to react."

Pokémon Adventures

Bede debuted inWatch Out!! Strong Rivals. He was first seen in front of theGalar Mine, unable to enter due to a large boulder blocking the entrance.Casey,Hop, andMarnie combined their Pokémon's attacks to move the boulder. After the others went inside,Henry pointed out that Bede was protecting the boulder and speculated his goal was to obtainWishing Stars found inside the mine. Later, everyone gathered atTurffield Stadium, where they each fought a Gym battle againstMilo and won.

InBlazing!! Bede's Feelings, Bede learned thatRose had dinner with Henry inHulbury, infuriating him. Wanting to have Henry retire from the Gym Challenge, Bede challenged him to abattle but lost. Despite this, Bede revealed the reason he was collecting Wishing Stars was to help Rose.

InTeary!! The Voice of the Master, Bede watched Henry's Gym battle againstAllister inStow-on-Side, but felt the former's performance was lacking and quickly left. Afterward, he used Rose'sCopperajah to try and destroy the Stow-on-Side mural, but was found by Casey,Marvin,Professor Magnolia, and Allister. Bede was then caught by severalLeague Staff at the request of Rose, who reprimanded Bede for damaging an important piece of Galar's history. As punishment for his actions, Bede was disqualified from the Gym Challenge.

InRising!! Opal of Ballonlea, inHammerlocke, Bede finished his forced withdrawal from the Gym Challenge. He was given a letter fromBallonlea Gym Leader,Opal, but crushed it in his hands without reading it. He was then alerted to a loud rumbling and wondered if it came from the HammerlockeEnergy Plant. At the plant, Bede metSonia and witnessedLeon trying to enter the building only to be turned away by theLeague Staff. Worried for Rose's safety, Bede attempted to break in, but was warned byRaihan that his behavior would potentially lower Rose's opinion of him even further should everything be fine.

InCracking!! Brilliant Tap-Dancing, Bede accepted Opal's invitation and visited her at theBallonlea Stadium. Opal, having taken a liking to Bede's personality, accepted him as a successor for her title of Gym Leader. He subsequently started undertaking the training necessary to be ready for this position at the Gym.

Bede after training with Opal

InRumble!! The Horrific Darkest Day, the Galar Gym Leaders agreed to gather atRose Tower to find out whether or not Rose intended on bringing harm to the region. Bede and Opal arrived first, but were stopped by Oleana. While Oleana kept the Gym Leaders busy, Bede, Henry, Casey, Hop, and Marnie headed up the elevator to meet with Rose, only to learn he wasn't in the building. Appearing on a video screen, Rose revealed that he would be restarting theDarkest Day in order to ensure Galar has a future. Power Spot lights then began appearing all over Galar, causing Pokémon to beginDynamaxing at random. While some went back to their hometowns to help deal with the rampaging Dynamax Pokémon, Bede traveled with the others to the Hammerlocke Energy Plant, where they were joined by Leon's group. Upon entering the building, everyone found Rose ecstatic that his plan was a success.

InShock!! Chairman Rose's Plan, Rose explained he meant no harm to Galar and sentSordward andShielbert to defeat Eternatus and prevent the Darkest Day from spiraling out of control. Despite their claims of being descendants of the heroes that once stopped the Darkest Day, Sordward and Shielbert were unable to win, forcing Rose to take their place. Oleana explained that Rose's actions were for the benefit of Galar and requested that everyone help stop Eternatus. The group agreed and made their way to the summit, only to find Rose had already been defeated. Bede kept Rose safe while the others faced Eternatus. They managed to take Eternatus down, but it got back up, changed into its Eternamax form, and quickly overwhelmed them.Zacian andZamazenta arrived to save everyone, but when they tried using theRusted Sword andShield, Eternatus grabbed them as well as Henry.

InOh My!! The Disappearance of Henry, Zacian and Zamazenta struck Eternatus with a doubleGiga Impact, causing a massive explosion of energy and light. Once the light cleared, Henry, Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus had all vanished. Casey andMarvin reviewed footage of the incident and discovered somethingteleporting Henry away just as Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus clashed. By tracking samples of Eternatus's poison on Henry's body and the material of the rusted artifacts, Casey found matching signals on both theIsle of Armor and theCrown Tundra. With no idea where Henry ended up, Oleana sent Bede, Casey, Marvin, Hop, and Marnie to both locations.

InBoom!! Reunion in a New Land, while riding a train to the Crown Tundra, Bede, Marnie, and Hop encounteredPeonia, a girl trying to escape from her overbearing father,Peony. They agreed to help, but upon noticing Peony's resemblance to Rose, Bede's dedication to the chairman led him to exposing Peonia. Later, at the station, Marnie challenged Peony to a battle, stating that if she won, Peonia would be allowed to go free. After Marnie won and Peonia left, Bede and the others agreed to take her place as part of the Peony Exploration Team. The four traveled toFreezington, where their home base was located.

InRrmbll!! Serious Tower Battle, Bede, Marnie, and Hop arrived atDyna Tree Hill, where they found aGalarianArticuno,Zapdos, andMoltres. Detecting traces of the rusted items in the area, Bede and the others split up to determine which of the Legendary bird Pokémon knew where it was located. Hop and Marnie went after Moltres and Zapdos respectively, leaving Bede with Articuno. InCrackle!! Retrieve the Sword & Shield, after an encounter with Moltres, Henry was taken to the Crown Tundra, where he reunited with Bede. Henry was introduced to Peony, only for the man to immediately take a disliking towards the boy. When Peonia returned to participate in the adven-tour, a delighted Peony also agreed to let Henry join as well. That night, Peonia found her father floating in midair. Bede explained that it was the work ofCalyrex, the King of Bountiful Harvests, in order for it to communicate with humans. The three agreed to help restore Calyrex to its former glory in exchange for it locating theRusted Sword.

InClip-Clop!! The King's Horse, Bede's group tried reuniting Calyrex with its former loyal steed,Spectrier. With theBlack Mane Hair collected from Spectrier and theRadiant Petal Calyrex made, Henry forged theReins of Unity. The group lured Spectrier to theCrown Shrine, but they were interrupted by a GigantamaxedCorviknight andButterfree. Realizing the Darkest Day had restarted, Bede, Henry, Peony, and Peonia fought off the rampaging giants. With the reins, Calyrex reforged its bond with Spectrier and changed into itsShadow Rider form, allowing it to find and retrieve the Rusted Sword.

InShing!! Final Form, Bede and Henry returned to the Galar mainland, where they reunited with Casey, Hop, and Marvin. There, they witnessed Zacian and Zamazenta use the rusted tools to become theirCrowned Sword and Shield forms. They traveled to Hammerlocke to confront Eternatus again, only to find a trio of nobles demanding that Sordward and Shielbert have their status as nobles reinstated and blocking the entrance to the city with theirGigantamaxed Pokémon. By Gigantamaxing their own Pokémon, Henry, Casey, and Hop defeated the nobles, allowing Bede to use his GigantamaxHatterene to determine where Eternatus was hiding. With Eternatus exposed, Zacian and Zamazenta combined their strength and finally took down theGigantic Pokémon, ending the Darkest Day.

InFwoom!! Goodbye, Galar, Bede paid Rose a visit in jail. Rose apologized for his earlier mistreatment of Bede during the Gym Challenge and explained he was only trying to keep the boy from being an accomplice to his crimes.

Trivia

Logo ofRose Tower
  • Bede's uniform number is "908", which can be read in Japanese asgoroawase for クレバーkurebā, meaning "clever".
  • According to his concept art, Bede is left-handed.
  • The logo ofRose Tower can be seen on the back of Bede's jacket. The same logo is printed on the uniforms of certainMacro Cosmos employees.
  • Bede is currently the onlyTrainer to permanently change his type specialization during a game, going fromPsychic-type toFairy-type, though his party still has three Psychic types.
    • He is also the second Trainer known to have changed his type specialization overall, followingJasmine, who used to trainRock-type before becoming theSteel-type expert she currently is.
  • Bede is the only Trainer with multipleLeague Cards to have his signature change between the two.
  • Bede is the only rival from the release version ofPokémon Sword and Shield not to appear inPokémon Journeys: The Series.
  • Bede getting recruited byOpal might be a reference to concept of changelings. In folklore, fairies were known to kidnap children and replace them with deformed fae children of their own. Opal is theFairy-type gym leader and Bede's original type,Psychic, is replaced by theFairy-type.
