Baxcalibur (Japanese:セグレイブSeglaive) is a dual-typeDragon/IcePokémon introduced inGeneration IX.

Itevolves fromArctibax starting atlevel 54. It is the final form ofFrigibax.

Baxcalibur canMega Evolve intoMega Baxcalibur using theBaxcalibrite. Mega Baxcalibur was introduced with theMega DimensionDLC forPokémon Legends: Z-A.

It is referred to as apseudo-legendary Pokémon by fans.

Biology

Baxcalibur is a large,theropod-like Pokémon whose body is predominantly navy blue in color. It has a series of hexagon-shaped ice patches located near its chest area, on its kneecaps, and underneath its tail. It also has squarish polygonal light blue patches underneath its feet. It has long muscular arms and three sharp white claws on its hands and feet, along with three red quills protruding from each of its wrists. It appears to be wearing an icy mask on its face, with a pair of ice spikes pointing upward on its snout and icicles pointing downward on its chin. The only part of the face not covered in ice is its yellow eyes. The black, ice-coated sail on its back resembles the blade of an axe or polearm.

Baxcalibur can spew cryogenic air from its mouth, which is cold enough to freeze liquid-hot lava. Baxcalibur uses its icy, cold breath to freeze foes and pulverizes them with a blow from its tail. In battle, Baxcalibur flips upside-down while supporting itself with its head and forelimbs, and uses its frigid breath to launch itself sail-first towards its opponents, finishing them off.

Baxcalibur is theonly known Pokémon capable of learning the moveGlaive Rush. Baxcalibur and its pre-evolved forms are also theonly known Pokémon that can haveThermal Exchange as anAbility.

Forms

Mega Baxcalibur flipping upside-down for attack

Baxcalibur canMega Evolve into Mega Baxcalibur.

The axe-like sail on Mega Baxcalibur's back has expanded and fused with an icy growth on the front of its stomach, specifically around the solar plexus area. This icy column formation resembles the hilt of a sword, thanks to the energy from Mega Evolution.[1]The sail now more closely resembles a large sword, with its frosted edges taking on a slight bluish gradient. The same goes for Mega Baxcalibur's mask, now wrapping around its eyes and the back of its head with additional hexagon-shaped ice patches. More of these ice patches add to its belly armor, with one patch separate from the main plating on each side, closer to Mega Baxcalibur's neck.

Due to Mega Evolution, Mega Baxcalibur can generate significantly more ice energy than before. Mega Baxcalibur channels its ice energy through its solar plexus nerve, enhancing its abilities. This upgraded nerve helps stabilize its center of gravity, supporting the enlarged sail of its giant sword. Mega Baxcalibur can absorb ice energy from its hilt at the solar plexus and unleash beams from it. Thanks to Mega Evolution, ice energy permeates its entire body, impacting its internal organs and nerves. Its reaction speed and muscle agility are enhanced, increasing the power of its attacks and explosive movements. As a result, Mega Baxcalibur is more powerful than the standard version of itself. The redness of its pupils indicates that the ice energy has also affected its optic nerves. Mega Baxcalibur can use its larger blade's immense weight to cut through nearly anything in half or smash it to pieces.[1] Curiously, the "hilt" of Mega Baxcalibur's blade seems to resemble the symbol forTerastallization.

Trivia

  • Baxcalibur and its pre-evolved forms are the onlyIce-type Pokémon in theDragon Egg Group.
  • Baxcalibur is the only pseudo-legendary Pokémon whosecatch rate differs across its entire evolutionary line.
  • Baxcalibur has the highest baseHP andAttack stats of allpseudo-legendary Pokémon.
    • Furthermore, Baxcalibur has the lowest baseSpecial Attack stat of all pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
  • Mega Baxcalibur has the highestAttack stat of allIce-type Pokémon, and is tied with Black and WhiteKyurem for the highest base stat total of all Ice-type Pokémon.

Origin

Baxcalibur may draw inspiration fromkaiju. Its upright posture may allude to how mostkaiju are humanoid in shape, due to the need to fit a human actor inside thecreature suit inkaiju films. It also has traits of certain species of dinosaurs, most notablyConcavenator, a theropod dinosaur which had a crest on its back and quills on its forelimbs. Fossils of the genus were first discovered inSpain, and the crest is hypothesized to have functioned as a tool ofthermoregulation.

Baxcalibur may also be based on other sail-backed prehistoric animals, such asSpinosaurus,Ouranosaurus,Arizonasaurus, andDimetrodon. The diamond shape of its sail may allude to the plates on the back ofstegosaurids. Its overall design may also reference old depictions of non-aviantheropod dinosaurs inpaleoart.

Based on Baxcalibur's Japanese name and the way it utilizes its sail through the moveGlaive Rush, this sail may be inspired by the head of aglaive. On Mega Baxcalibur, the sail combined with the growth on its stomach resembles a sword instead.

Baxcalibur evolving at level 54 could be a reference to 1954, the yearthe firstGodzilla movie was released.

Name origin

Baxcalibur may be a combination ofback andExcalibur (mythical sword belonging toKing Arthur).

Seglaive may be a combination of 背se (back) andglaive (referring toa polearm weapon with origins in Europe, or short swords such as theGladius).
