It is based onPokémon Red and Blue, featuringGeneration I Pokémon. It was released on February 24, 2000. Base Set 2 is composed of reprints of theBase Set andJungle expansions.
Base Set 2 was the first English expansion to use the Cosmos Holofoil.
The following cards from the original Base Set were not re-printed in Base Set 2: Machamp (08/102), Porygon (39/102), Koffing (51/102), Ponyta (60/102), Clefairy Doll (70/102), Devolution Spray (72/102), Pokémon Flute (86/102), and Revive (89/102).
The Jungle expansion had 16 cards that were numbered in the set but were duplicates with one being the standard version and the other being Holofoil. Base Set 2 only includes either the Holofoil or standard print of several of these cards and omits several of them all together. Additionally while Jungle introduced new versions of Electrode and Pikachu, the versions in Base Set 2 are reprints of the Base Set version. Several other cards from the Jungle expansion were not included.
