Barry (Japanese:ジュンJun) is therival character inPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum andPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. His name is chosen by the player at the start of the game.
In the core series games
Role
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl
Barry, like theplayer, lives inTwinleaf Town and is also the player's childhood friend (and soon-to-berival). Barry is always in a hurry and extremely impatient, and because of this, often crashes into other people (usually demanding a fine from them) or misses important details.
Barry is incredibly determined and it is very difficult to discourage him; the only thing that has done this so far was his crushing loss to theTeam GalacticCommander,Jupiter atLake Acuity, although this defeat lead to a major positive change in Barry's character, causing him to become slightly more serious, realistic, and mature. He is also quite the braggart, often boasting about his battling prowess or how cool his Pokémon are. Barry does have a soft side, however, as seen after the wild Starly attack.
Barry is also one to take risks and quickly jump into action; it was this behavior that caused the player and himself to be attacked bywildStarly, setting off the chain reaction that would result in the player receiving their first Pokémon.
After becoming theSinnoh LeagueChampion, the player can find him training atStark Mountain during the week, and at theFight Area on weekends, ready to battle. Unlike the player andLucas/Dawn, Barry did not receive a Pokédex, due to him rushing out ofProfessor Rowan's lab before Rowan could give him one.
Barry's father isPalmer, one of the SinnohBattle Frontier's fiveFrontier Brains. Barry wants to be like him, which is the reason he is so determined and trains hard. Barry is actually very much like his father characteristic-wise. Both he and Palmer are constantly in a hurry, running into people (including the player), and both seem to react the same way when they happen to run into people.
InPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Barry can be encountered and fought at theBattle Tower. He teams up with his father in theDouble Battle mode, revealing that he actually succeeded in defeating him.
Pokémon Platinum
In addition to his hyperactive personality, it is also shown that in the beginning of Platinum, he gets distracted very easily. In the events of Platinum, Barry suggests going to visit Professor Rowan at his lab rather than go to the lake in search of a Pokémon of the same rarity as ared Gyarados (as happened inDiamond and Pearl). When Professor Rowan questionsLucas/Dawn and Barry onRoute 201 about going into thetall grass without any Pokémon, deeming it reckless and wondering if such people were well-suited for Pokémon, Barry admits it was his idea and says that his friend should at least get a Pokémon if not him. After this, Professor Rowan gives them both Pokémon, much to Barry's excitement.
After the player completes theStark Mountain sidequest, Barry can be found at theSurvival Area every day, but can only be battled on weekends. He desires to get into theBattleground, even asking for help fromCrasher Wake. If the player enters the Hall of Fame 20 times, his team's levels increase by 20.
Pokémon
Barry'sfirst partner Pokémon depends on theplayer's choice (he will choose the one that is strong against the player's), and the remainder of his team will be filled out based on this choice.

Trivia
- Barry has achieved a high score of 2,000 atPal Park, which serves as the default high score.
- Among the default names for Barry in the Japanese version ofPokémon Diamond is Shigeru, one of the default names in bothPokémon Red andPokémon FireRed forBlue. "Gary" is also one of the optional names for him in the German and Italian versions of Pokémon Diamond. Gary's Korean name, 바람Baram, is among the optional names for him in the Korean version.
- All Japanese default names for Barry come from game staff members' first names, all of whom are listed in the game's credits. Jun is fromJunichi Masuda, production director and music composer. Shigeru is from Shigeru Ōmori, game design leader. Kōji is fromKōji Nishino, a game designer. Toshinobu is fromToshinobu Matsumiya, game scenario author. Hisashi is from Hisashi Sogabe, battle system programmer. Sōsuke is from Sōsuke Tamada, field system programmer. Akito is from Akito Mori, communication system programmer. Nozomu is from Nozomu Saito, also one of the programmers.
- Although Barry can only be battled on weekends, if theplayer saves the game in front of him on a Sunday inPokémon Diamond and Pearl, he can still be battled on weekdays if the player does not leave the Fight Area during the periods of time in between. This was corrected inPokémon Platinum.
- Barry has an orangePokétch, but an old lady inOreburgh City states that blue and pink are the only colors that are produced by thePokétch Company.
- In the code of Pokémon Platinum, there exists a variation of Barry'sSurvival Areateam that's 10levels higher than his initial weekend battle team, but it is completely inaccessible through normal gameplay. The levels of this team approximately match Barry's weekend battle team from Diamond and Pearl once the player has entered theHall of Fame 10 times. This battle also features pieces of dialogue from Barry that go unused as well due to the battle's inaccessibility. The reason behind this battle's inaccessibility is unknown. Due to it being unused, Barry's Survival Area team is only upgraded following 20 Hall of Fame entries, which increases its levels by 20.[5]
- At the time of the release of Pokémon Platinum, Barry'sfirst partner Pokémon was the highest-level Pokémon owned by arival character, being able to grow up to level 85. This record wasn't broken untilPokémon Scarlet and Violet'sDLC expansion, whereNemona andKieran's Pokémon were given higher levels, with her first partner Pokémon and hisHydrapple reaching level 87 at their strongest.
- InPokémon Masters EX,Barry reveals that he keeps trying to fine people because he wants to gather money for his ownBattle Tower so he could challengehis father there.
