Barry (Japanese:ジュンJun) is a major recurring character inPokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. He is aPokémon Trainer fromTwinleaf Town and one ofAsh'srivals. He first appeared inBarry's Busting Out All Over!.

History

Pre-series

Barry at the beginning of his journey

Before leaving for hisjourney, Barry had always participated in theTwinleaf Festivals, in one of which he sang a duet withDawn.

Eventually, Barry became aPokémon Trainer and he was able to capture soon aHeracross and, with a lot of effort, Barry had won in threeGym battles. Two of these victories were againstByron andGardenia, the latter being won in a hard battle of hisEmpoleon versus a powerfulCacnea withDrain Punch where Empoleon needed the powerful moveHydro Cannon to have a chance of winning the matchup

One day, Barry watched theHearthome City Tag Battle Competition and became quite in awe ofPaul's performance at the event, sparking a deep respect for the trainer and an interest in emulating him.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Barry debuted inBarry's Busting Out All Over!, where he intended to challengeFantina for aGymbattle, but he instead metAsh at the door of theHearthome Gym. He challenged Ash to a battle to prove histraining methods wrong, but Ash came out as the victor. Afterwards, Barry stayed to watch Ash challenge Fantina inA Shield with a Twist!. At times, he was skeptical about Ash's strategy in the battle, but by the end of the fight, he realized that his techniques were excellent. He later stated that he would be hisrival if Ash could defeatByron, whom Barry had previously beaten.

Barry and Palmer

After staying with the group forthe following episode, he departed to train atIron Island, but appeared again inSteeling Peace of Mind! andSaving the World From Ruins! at Iron Island, where after being caught up inTeam Galactic's plot to use the island as a radar to scan for theSpear Pillar he and Ash put aside most of their differences and became friendly rivals.

InStopped in the Name of Love!, Barry announced his plans of entering the upcomingPokémon Ping Pong Tournament and invited the group to join the competition. Later, whenDawn's Piplup fled thePokémon Center, he helped to search for him. It was also revealed in this episode that he is good friends withDawn's rival,Kenny. He reappeared inOld Rivals, New Tricks!, in which he watched Dawn and Kenny participate in theSandalstrawContest and shared with Ash andBrock that it was his first time watching a Pokémon Contest live.

InTo Thine Own Pokémon Be True!, Barry entered the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament withEmpoleon as his partner Pokémon. He made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to famousping pong playerO.

He returned home for the annualTwinleaf Festival. InHistorical Mystery Tour!, Barry decided to have a battle with Ash, but he became side-tracked when he spotted a familiarXatu. Ash, Dawn and Barry were all transported toXatu's Forest, an odddimension that enabled them to each relive one of their earliest memories; in Barry's case it was how he met his Heracross. After returning, he bumped into his father,Palmer. InChallenging a Towering Figure!, he entered theFestival Battle Challenge as part of the Twinleaf Festival in the hope that he would get to battle Palmer, but lost to Ash. At the end of the Festival, Barry decided to travel alone to get theSunyshore CityBadge.

Barry and Ash

InGotta Get a Gible!, Barry battled Ash and his newly-caughtGible. Barry won his first battle against Ash, but Ash didn't take it harshly, praising Gible anyway and instructing it to listen next time. Barry celebrated his win as he held up his ticket to challenge Fantina, but Gible bit his hand and ate the ticket.

Barry and Paul

InFighting Ire with Fire!, Barry revealed that he had acquired all the necessary Badges to compete inSinnoh'sLeague Conference. During this event, he finally met his idol Paul for the first time and challenged him to a battle, but to his dismay, Paul refused and suggested he battle Ash instead. Barry initially said Ash was not at their level since Ash was still at seven Badges compared to himself and Paul having eight, but later agreed to battle him. He chose his Empoleon to face off againstAsh's Monferno. However, the battle was put on hold whenTeam Rocket attacked.

InAn Old Family Blend!, Barry showed up for theLily of the Valley Conference where he was seen in the stadium along with all the other competitors. InLeague Unleashed!, he passed the preliminary round.

InCasting a Paul on Barry!, he battled Paul in the third round of the tournament, and even though he put up a strong effort and used good strategies with two newer Pokémon on his team,Skarmory andHitmonlee, along with his partner, Empoleon, he ended up falling before the superior strength, endurance, and tactics of Paul and his team, not knocking out one of Paul's Pokémon in the process, though Paul commented afterwards that it had been a great battle. Barry then stayed and watched Ash's battles with Paul andTobias, and he parted from the group inThe Semi-Final Frontier!, promising to be reunited with Ash and become as strong as him.

Barry made a cameo appearance in the ending credits ofZoroark: Master of Illusions.

Character

Much likehis game counterpart, Barry possesses a hyperactive personality that often goes well past impatience. To this end, whenever something or someone gets in his way, annoys him, or causes him any minor inconvenience, Barry will lose his temper and shout for the cause of his ire to be fined, however implausible it might be. This attitude is so recurring and extreme that hisEmpoleon often shows exasperation at hisTrainer's wild behavior.

Barry admiresPaul and histraining methods, and wants to be a strong Trainer like him. Initially he also appeared to be developing a rather similar mentality to Paul in regards to catching Pokémon, such as preferring tocatch immediately strong Pokémon for training and hypothetically suggesting that he would just look for a more powerful Pokémon if Empoleon wasn't strong enough instead of training Empoleon to become stronger. This latter trait was notably not expressed again after Barry's first loss to Ash in his debut episode, and while Barry didn't stop admiring Paul for his strength, in his later appearances he was consistently seen to care about his own Pokémon in a manner closer to Ash, praising them for their hard work and showing concern when one of them is injured, such as when Empoleon was afflicted by the sound-waves caused byTeam Galactic's actions while onIron Island.
