Ash's Fearow (Japanese:サトシのオニドリルSatoshi's Onidrill) is aPokémon thatAshcaught inThe Electric Tale of Pikachumanga.

In the manga

The Electric Tale of Pikachu

Ash's Fearow is one of the major alterations from theanimated series inThe Electric Tale of Pikachu. It is the firstwild Pokémon Ash caught in thiscanon. It stayed as Ash's majorFlying type throughout the manga, as hisPidgeotto abandons him early on.

Fearow was a leader of a group ofSpearow, which attacked and exhaustedAsh's Pikachu. However, Pikachu defeated Fearow with aThunder Shock, so Ash was able to catch it, turning Fearow into one of his most used Pokémon in this manga, staying with him the entire way. InPlay Misty For Me, Ash attempted to have itbattle againstMisty at theCerulean Gym (during which he had to get hishat back from her), but it came out with a sign around its neck saying, "Sleeping. Do not disturb." Only when Ash threw its favorite food, a soy sauce-covered dumpling, at Misty, did it actually do anything.

Later, Ash uses Fearow against theBlack Fog, agiantHaunter that was terrorizingLavender Town.

Fearow was also used to rescueMahri and herDewgong inYou Bet Your Wife, though neither it nor Ash got credit for the act.

As a Spearow

History

In thefirst episode of the animated series,Ash andPikachu were attacked by a flock of wildSpearow. The leader of the flockevolved into Fearow at some point during Ash'sjourney throughKanto.

When Ash returned toPallet Town inPallet Party Panic, this Fearow was again causing trouble, this time for a flock ofPidgey andPidgeotto. After his own Pidgeottoevolved into aPidgeot, Ash attempted to capture the Fearow while riding on Pidgeot's back. Despite its weakened state, he was still unable to capture it, and left Pidgeot behind to guard against any future attacks.

Fearow briefly reappeared in flashbacks inFighting Flyer with Fire,Betrayed, Bothered, and Beleaguered!, andThe Same Moon, Now and Forever!.

Personality and characteristics

Fearow is depicted as quite aggressive and serves as the leader of a flock of Spearow. Their aggressive nature is evident in their ability to intimidate even the flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto, prompting the latter to seek safety in the dense leaves of trees. Fearow's formidable power is demonstrated when it easily defeats Ash's Pidgeotto with a single strike and attempts to attack the flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto. Upon the Evolution of Ash's Pidgeotto into Pidgeot, Fearow displays resilience by enduring multiple attacks and even withstanding an electric attack from Pikachu. Despite being weakened, Fearow remains determined to fight and swats away the Poké Ball, signaling its refusal to give up. However, when faced with a united front as the flock of Pidgeotto and Pidgey join forces to retaliate, Fearow chooses to retreat, showcasing a sense of self-preservation.
