Lucilia sericata (Meigen 1826)
Identification
Males are distinguished by the combination of
Pale basicosta (brown to black in about half of the species)
3 pairs postsutural acrostichal bristles (see figure; only 2 pairs in about half of the species; if 1 pair seeNeomyia cornicina)
Frons about 1/10 head width (broader inL. cuprina and narrower inL. thatuna; this only works for males)
Range
holarctic & neotropical; in the New World, so. Canada to Argentina(1)
Food
Larvae feed on carrion. Adults take nectar and have been used as pollinators of onions, cabbages and also other Brassicaceae,
Life Cycle
Remarks
Larvae are used in forensics to determine the age of a corpse, and in medicine to clean up wounds (they feed on partially decomposed tissue, leaving the healthy one alone)
