Publije Ovidije Nazon (Publius Ovidius Naso) poznatiji kaoOvidije, bio je antički pjesnik. On se, poredHoracija iVergilija, ubraja među tri najveća pjesnika klasične rimske književnosti.[1] U svojoj ranoj fazi, Ovidije je pisao ljubavne pjesme, u zrelijoj fazi bavio se epskim ciklusima, da bi u kasnoj fazi pisao tužbalice (jadikovke).
Njegova dobro očuvana djela i radovi nisu bila dovoljno cijenjena i poštovana u kasnoj antici. Međutim, uSrednjem vijeku ibaroku, ona su imala izuzetno snažaj utjecaj na pjesništvo, likovnu umjetnost i muziku tog perioda. Ipak, u perioduromantike, taj utjecaj je opao, oživjevši opet u drugoj polovini 19. vijeka.[1] Iako je njegov cjelokupni rad duboko urastao u kulturnu svijest današnje civilizacije, ipak se "Preobražaji" ("Metamorfoze") smatraju za njegovo najveće djelo.
Ovidije je pisao više o svom životu nego većina drugih rimskih pjesnika. Podaci o njegovoj biografiji crpe se prvenstveno iz njegove poezije, posebno izTristije 4.10,[2] koja daje poduži autobiografski prikaz njegovog života. Drugi izvori uključujuSeneku Starijeg iKvintilijana.
Ovidije je prvih 25 godina svoje književne karijere proveo prvenstveno pišući poeziju uelegičnom metru sa erotskim temama.[3] Hronologija ovih ranih radova nije sigurna, ali naučnici su utvrdili okvirne datume. Smatra se da su njegovo najranije sačuvano djeloHeroides, pisma mitoloških heroina njihovim odsutnim ljubavnicima, koja su možda objavljena 19. godine prije Hrista, iako je datum nesiguran jer zavisi od obavijesti uAm. 2.18.19–26 koji izgleda opisuje zbirku kao rano objavljeno djelo.[4]
