Chess

(and chess variants)
In the western world,Chessis everyone's first abstract game, and also one of the most widelyavailable games in virtually any game related context.  As theworlds best known abstract, it's also the focus of unlimited numbers ofvariants and related games.   Some are just for fun, others arethe focus of serious play.   A few variants are at Boardspace.

  • Chess960, also known as Fisher Random Chess.
  • Ultima A truely different kind of  chess,
  • King's Color is a wild chess-like game on a Hex board.
  • Atomic Chess is a super-explosive variant - all captures have a 3x3 kill radius.

Robots: They play ok, but are not intended to be world class opponents.

The back story:
Chesswas the first abstract game I learned, so has to be a sentimentalfavorite even though I no longer play it regularly.  Ultima isaninteresting case; I remember being shown the game by a chess playingfriend while in high school, which would have been shortly after it wasfirst published.  It's stayed with me.  RichardHesey, areyou out there?   Chess960 is another case, I learned and played itfor a many-games tournament, and it's played the way I prefer to playall my games - just work it out from first principles.
