Grey 「グレイ Gurei」, whose real name is unknown,^[1] is a commoner and a 3rd Class JuniorMagic Knight of theClover Kingdom'sBlack Bull squad.^[4][5]

Appearance[]

Grey is a young woman of average height. She has light blue hair in a bob cut with some strands hanging in the front. She wears a white, sleeveless shirt and a pair of dark blue, high-waisted pants that cinch just below her knees. The pants have five connected flowers on the waist with the middle flower being the largest and the ones on the side getting smaller. There are also three flower-shaped buttons vertically above the middle flower. In addition, she sports a brown belt, connected to a pouch, in which she carries hergrimoire, on her left side. She also wears a pair of dark blue flat shoes with flowers on the strap, similar to those on her pants.

As a member of the Black Bull squad, she dons the squad's signature robe. The hooded robe is short with the Black Bull insignia on the left side.

In her first transformation, she appears as an extremely large, heavy-set man with slicked-back black hair, sphere earrings with links that connect to other small spheres that hang, and glowing eyes. The rest of her appearance is not shown because of it being shaded.

Personality[]

Grey is an extremely shy person in her true form and becomes easily embarrassed. While transformed into someone else, Grey is friendly with others and enjoys working together with her squad mates. In addition to this, Grey typically imitates the attitude and actions of the person she is transformed into, suggesting impressive observational and acting skills.

Grey is also shown to be both incredibly kind-hearted but at the same time slightly naive. Despite being regularly abused and verbally taunted by her stepsisters and stepmother, Grey still harbors the slight hope that she could mend their relationship and become closer to them. She attempts to befriend her two elder stepsisters by transforming to look more like them, showing her sense of naivety due to not recognizing their shallow and violent personalities and for not considering their possible violent reaction to her Transformation Magic.

It is strongly implied that her shyness is based on insecurity and lack of confidence de Grey in itself, born from all the physical and verbal abuse Gray suffered from his stepmother and stepsisters during his youth.

Biography[]

Grey was born in the Common Realm of theClover Kingdom.^[5] After her father remarries, Grey is mistreated by her stepmother and two elder stepsisters and forced to do all of the household chores. Several years after receiving hergrimoire, Grey demonstrates her magic for her stepsisters andtransforms to look more like them, hoping they would accept her more as a sister. Outraged that she would dare to impersonate them, the stepsisters scream at Grey and threaten her with their magic, chasing her out of the house. While Grey is wandering, three men try to rob her, butGauche Adlai knocks them out withReflect Refrain. Gauche explains that it washis sister's wish to save Grey and that Grey should prepare to do everything herself if she commits to run away from home.^[6]

Yami Sukehiro invites her to join theBlack Bull squad of theMagic Knights.^[7] When Gauche is later invited to join the squad, Grey is in a different disguise and does not tell him her real identity.^[8]

Years later, at the Black Bulls base, Grey is sitting on a couch whileMagna Swing andLuck Voltia bicker about something.^[4][9] When Captain Yami returns, Grey and the other members of the squad greet him. After the introduction ofAsta, Grey joins her squadmates to watch Magna preform anintiation ceremony on the new member. When Asta is acknowledged and given his robe, Grey and some other members congratulate him.

During the next day's breakfast, Grey joins her squad mates for a meal. When Asta asks what Magic Knights do, Grey transforms into Asta and says that it is interesting work and that she is looking forward to working with Asta.^[10]

Months later, Grey joins her squad mates atRaque. During their time on the beach, Grey spends most of her time transforming into other people. When Yami shows up, Grey and the rest are punished by being buried in the sand. Grey then listens when Yami explains about theSeabed Temple and how they are going to get there.^[11] A week later on the night of the their departure, Grey joins the rest of her squad in encouragingNoelle Silva to do her best.^[12]

When Noelle's resolve wavers during her training, Grey (disguised as Magna) and the other Black Bulls appear and cheer her on.^[13] Encouraged, Noelle completesSea Dragon's Cradle but then loses her concentration and control over the spell, drenching the Black Bulls.^[14] They then assemble in Noelle's spell and travel to the Seabed Temple. Once they pass through the temple's barrier, they are greeted by a group of citizens, who direct them into the temple. They enter to meet theHigh Priest, who invites them to play a game in exchange for a magic stone.^[15] Yami accepts the game invitation, so Gifso summons the other priests and then separates all the competitors to different sections of the temple's maze. Grey wonders who should be her next transformation.^[16]

Members of theEye of the Midnight Sun infiltrate the temple, so Yami charges the Black Bulls with defeating the terrorists and Gifso changes the rules of the game.^[17] Grey meets up with Gauche and transforms into him, pretending to be hisReal Double. She distractsZarick long enough for Gauche to hit the terrorist withLarge Reflect Ray. She mocks the terrorist and makes silly faces, and Gauche tells her not to do such things with his appearance.^[18]

Because Grey hurt her ankle during the fight, Gauche has to carry her while they look for the others. They noticeCharmy Pappitson sleeping at the other end of a tunnel; however, when they approach her,Zuta'sBind Vine trap ensnares them. Gauche devises a plan and has Grey transform a nearby boulder into a piece of meat. He then yells at Charmy that someone is trying to take her food. The awoken Charmy unleashes her magic and easily defeats Zuta, freeing Grey and Gauche from the vines. Charmy bites down on the meat but it turns back into a rock. Meanwhile, Gauche compliments Grey's ability to transform things other than herself, which surprises her. Suddenly, Grey's own disguise falls away revealing her true appearance. Deeply embarrassed, she tells them not to look at her and tries to hide her face behind her hands.^[19]

The three arrive to the main battle too late, as Yami has already killedVetto. The Black Bulls are given beds in the infirmary to recover from the fight, and Grey hides under the bedsheet. When the temple's citizens show up to cheer for the Black Bulls, Grey pokes her head out and expresses her desire to get over her embarrassment.^[20] The next day, the Black Bulls leave the Seabed Temple and return to their base.^[21]

A few days later, Yami throws a feast for the squad because they have managed to reach zero stars. After Asta leaves early,Finral Roulacase reveals to the others that the curse on Asta's arms could not be cured.^[22] The Black Bulls are spying on Asta when he declares that he is not giving up.^[23] The next day, Grey and Charmy travel to a jungle in search of a cure for Asta's cursed broken arms.^[24] However, they return unsuccessful, embarrassed, and covered in magical mushroom parasites.^[25]

A few weeks later, Grey tries to socialize with Gauche andGordon Agrippa. However, they are interrupted whenRades Spirito,Sally,Valtos, and an army of corpses attack the Black Bulls base.^[26] When Sally tries to attack Gordon, Grey usesher new spell to transmuteSticky Salamander intoCrystal Magic, allowing Gauche to destroy it. Rades then summonsNo.0 - Michael Caesal and easily defeats the Black Bulls, but Grey refuses to give up after reflecting on what the squad and base mean to her.^[27]

Grey is surprised whenHenry Legolant appears, and admonishes Gauche when he talks over Henry.^[28] Rades attacks the Black Bulls, but Henry protects his squadmates with part of the base and thanks them while introducing himself.^[29][30] Grey is terrified when Henry transforms the base into agiant minotaur^[31][32] and displays its destructive potential.^[33] After Sally enlarges her salamander and uses its increased viscosity to pin down the base, Gauchemultiplies Grey and she transmutes the gel intoPlant Magic so that Gordon's magic is more effective. Taking advantage of their distraction, Rades attacks again but Henry punches the corpse, defeating it.^[34]

The Black Bulls are celebrating their success when Valtos returns having collected themagic stone, and the Eye of the Midnight Sun members then retreat. Grey is relieved that they and the base are safe.^[35] After being saved from theArrows of Judgment, Grey and the other Black Bulls notice light coming from the horizon. Suddenly Gauche begins glowing^[36] and turns on his squadmates.^[37] After they are defeated, theelf leaves.^[38] Later, some other Black Bulls return to the base and find Grey, Gordon, and Henry sitting among the rubble.^[39] When Charmy returns and finds her garden destroyed, she feeds her squadmates withSheep Cook: Master Chef's food, which restores their magic power. Once the base reassembles, the Black Bulls head out to protect the kingdom.^[40]

When they reach Hecairo, Grey saves townspeople by transmuting the magic holding them captive.^[41] After Asta exorcises the elves, the Black Bulls' celebration is interrupted by Rades, Sally, and Valtos.^[42] Once all three are convinced to help save the kingdom, Valtos teleports the base to the capital.^[43]

When they see a group of elves attacking from the floating dungeon, the base is warped inside Clover Castle and combats and defeats the elves.^[44] In retaliation,Reve pulls part of the base into herGlamour World while Drowa andPatollicombine spells to break apart the rest of the base.^[45]

As Grey, Gordon, Henry, Asta, Rades, and Valtos fall, Gordon creates a large cloud of poison which Grey transmutes into cotton, cushioning their fall. Yami orders the Black Bulls to handle the elves as he heads into theShadow Palace. However, before the Black Bulls can act, Drowa andEclatimmobilize them all.^[46] Asta'sDemon-Destroyer Sword frees him, Grey, Gordon, and Henry from the enchantment, and Grey transforms a piece of rubble into a mirror, reflecting back Drowa's attack.^[47] Following Asta to the top of the dungeon, Grey and Gordon ride atop Henry'smini base and protect an immobilized Asta with a mirrored curtain of transmuted poison.^[48]

Drowa creates a mirror ball to scatter light and distract Asta's black form and then tries to catch them all with a large reflection of Eclat's eye, so Henry has them cram into the base and Grey transmutes the outside into mirrors. Before Drowa can destroy the mini base, Henry jettisons the other three and then throws himself at the elves.^[49] Grey transforms herself into the Demon-Slayer Sword so that Asta can throw her to catch the falling Henry. She transforms part of the ground into cotton, cushioning their fall.^[50]

Grey watches as Asta exorcises the two elves. She leans over Gauche waiting for him to wake up, and he accidentally headbutts her when he is startled by Gordon's face. Gauche thanks everyone for saving him and Marie, and they all pile onto him in a hug. Suddenly Charmy and the other Black Bulls drop down on top of the dungeon in a large pile of cotton, and she begins handing out more of Master Chef's food.^[51] The Magic Knights gather together down in the Clover Castle. As the group recovers before following Yami into the Shadow Palace, they are attacked by two elves, butFuegoleon andMereoleona Vermillion arrive and defeat the elves.^[52] As the gate to the Shadow Palace is shrinking, more possessedGolden Dawns attack, so the Black Bulls andKirsch Vermillion remain to hold them off while the captains, Asta, Noelle, andMimosa Vermillion fly to the gate.^[53] Shortly after, Yuno and a group of Magic Knights arrive and quickly defeat the elves.^[54]

A few days later, the Black Bulls barge into theMagic Parliament Courthouse to rescue Asta and Secre.^[55]Damnatio Kirashrinks their spells, but Asta uses the Demon-Destroyer Sword's ability to remove the effect. Nozel and Fuegoleon then interrupt the fight and pass on a mission from Julius: The Black Bulls will be exiled while the squad investigatesdevils and monitors Asta and Secre.^[56]

Grey, Gauche, and Asta accompany Gordon when he visitshis family. Grey is terrified by the creepy nature of the house and family. During dinner, Roxanne hands Grey a bizarre creature, which cause Grey to scream internally. Afterward, Nathan shows the Black Bulls his workshop, which further terrifies Grey.^[57] Nathan then reveals that he has been studying curses and poisons to create cures and treatments. Nathancreates a map that senses the locations of curses, and Grey and Gauche notice that one is at the Black Bull base, indicating that Henry is cursed. The map then registers a particularly powerful curse in theHeart Kingdom.^[58]

Grey, Gauche, and Asta return to the base, while Gordon remains with his family.^[59]

Six months later, Grey hides behind a couch and greets Asta and Finral when they return to the base with fruit from theHeart Kingdom. After Finral leaves to retrieve Yami,Dante Zogratis attacks the base.^[60] During the fight, Dante breaks into the base, andVanessa Enoteca tells Grey and Gauche to stand behind her andRouge.^[61] After drawing on 60% ofhis devil's power, Dante immobilizes Grey, Vanessa, and Gauche in midair. In order to draw out Asta's darkest emotions, Dantecreates a sword and impales Gauche with it, which horrifies Grey. Overcome with rage, Asta lashes out at Dante^[62] and inadvertently erases the magic holding his squadmates.^[63] The three fall onto a cushion of cotton, and as Gauche bleeds out, Grey cries over her inability to help.^[64]

Grey remembers the first time she met Gauche and resolves to save him. She uses her magic to remove the sword and close the wound, which impresses Dante. He requests both Grey and Vanessa to be his women, but Yami arrives and blocks Dante's path.^[65] Grey and Vanessa are overjoyed to see their captain.^[66] Finral joins them in watching Yami fight Dante.^[67] She and her squadmates panic when Dante delightedly reveals his plan to recreate theTree of Qliphoth and unleash devils on the world.^[68]

After Yami and Asta defeat Dante,^[69] Gauche regains consciousness, and Grey hugs him as he sits up.Zenon Zogratis then ambushes Yami and captures him. The Black Bulls watch helplessly as Zenon carries Yami through a spatial portal.^[70]

That night, the Black Bulls later return to theRoyal Capital. AfterOwen checks Asta's injuries, Grey requests that the healer inspect Gauche as well. Owen is surprised to see that Gauche's tissues were reassembled rather than simply healed, and speculates that her magic may not truly be Transformation Magic. He then tells them all to rest.^[71] Owen later determines that her magic isTransmutation Magic.^[72]

The next day, Grey and the others are sitting in the base when the squad's vice-captain,Nacht Faust, briefly visits them. Nacht informs them of the coming mission to infiltrate the Spade Kingdom and criticizes the members' reputations. Grey argues that he should not judge them based on their appearances, but Nacht counters that they should change their appearances if they do not want to looked at as bad people. As he leaves, he advises them to get stronger if they want to help save Yami.^[73]

Three days later, Asta uses his newUnite to defeat thedemon sent from the Spade Kingdom. He suddenly drops out of the form but is saved by Finral, who uses portals to drop him onto the roof of the base. Grey and some of the other Black Bulls greet him.^[74] They travel to the Spade Kingdom^[75] and smash through the walls of the castle to the ritual chamber,^[76] with Grey worrying about the amount of destruction they have caused to the castle.

Moris attacks them with tendrils that begindisassembling the base and bypass Rouge's protection. Grey transmutes one of the tendrils into plants, so Moris sends the others at her. Gauche then multiplies Grey and she transmutes the rest. Moris switches to Gravity Magic, but Gordonenables Henry to absorb Moris's magic power, which reinforces the base. The rest of the Black Bulls then show up.^[77] The Black Bulls shout for Yami, waking him up. When he laughingly asks if they all like him that much, they enthusiastically affirm that they do, and he echoes the sentiment.^[78]

Lucifero uses Moris's magic and life to accelerate the ritual, causing the second gate to open. As the devils pour out, Lucifero takes control of them and merges them all together, and the Black Bulls watch in dismay as the coffins holding Yami andWilliam Vangeance are pulled into the mass of flesh. While Lucifero's monstrous form breaks out of the castle, Gauche multiplies Grey so that she can transmute large portions of the castle, enabling Henry to combine them into the base. The createdUltra Giant Bull then punches Lucifero.^[79] As the base fights the devil, Grey sits in the cockpit with her squadmates and eats Charmy's magic-restoring food,^[80] and they all encourage Asta to defeat the monster without hurting the captains^[81] so they do not lose hope when Lucifero heavily damages the base.^[82]

After Astaslashes the monster in half, the base catches Yami as he falls. The Black Bulls then gather around Yami on the hand and are overjoyed to see him.^[83] When Lucifero manifests his body from the monster's remains, he crushes the base.^[84] Although Grey and most of the squad get buried in the rubble, Rouge enables Grey to transmute the rubble into more plants and to escape. Grey reaches Yami and repairs the damage to his body, noticing that parts have become devil-like and he is overflowing with magic power. Patolli,Langris Vaude, and William then fly over, and Grey watches as William hands Yami aMistilteinn Blade.^[85] During the ensuing battle, Grey and Vanessa watch in shock as Asta defeats Lucifero.^[86]

After the battle, Yami and Nacht are dying from the holes in their torsos, but Grey is unable to help because she is out of magic power. WhenCharlotte Roselei confesses her love for Yami, Rouge pulls the other Black Bulls out of the rubble of their base, and Charmy force feeds Mimosa some of her Master Chef's food. With her magic power restored, Mimosasaves Yami and Nacht. With the Black Bulls reunited, they thank Nacht for his help, welcoming him to the squad, which he accepts.^[87]

A year and three months later, the Black Bull and Golden Dawn squads take the base to investigate devil activity along the kingdom's border.^[88] Yuno defeats the high-ranking devils, butAdramelech escapes.^[89] Afterward, Nacht tells the Black Bulls to behave before he heads back to the Capital. Magna and Luck begin fighting, so Grey and Gordon plead with them to stop. When Nacht returns with Vanessa and Finral, he informs the rest of the squad about the attack on Asta and his apparent death. However, they all refuse to accept that he is dead and head out together to find him.^[90]

The Black Bulls' efforts in finding Asta lead them back to the Witches Forest where they ask the Witch Queen for help. The Witch Queen begins telling them that Asta is alive but too far away to be summoned when suddenly Dorothy Unsworth arrives and reveals that with their combined magic and Finral's spatial magic, they can castthe Door of Fate, a massive compound magic spell that will open a portal to Asta. The Black Bulls, Dorothy and the Witch Queen begin work on preparing the ritual to cast the spell.^[91] Before they can begin however, they are interrupted by the arrival of Damnatio Kira who has become apaladin and several Guardian Angels, sent by Lucius to prevent the Black Bulls from retrieving Asta.^[92]

Damnatio quickly neutralizes the Witches Forest defenses and has the guardian angels fire a powerful magic beam at the Door of Fate ritual site but Gauche and Zora used their combined magic to reflect the attack back at Damnatio. All of the Black Bulls except for Vanessa and Finral emerge from the ritual site prepared to confront Damnatio.^[93] The Black Bulls carry out a suicide charge strategy in order to stall for time and with Gauche using his magic to create copies of Grey across the battlefield so that she can instantly restore all their injuries. Damnatio catches onto this strategy and goes to target the real Grey hidding inside one of Charmy's Sheep Cooks. Gauche attempts to useMirrors Shift to move Grey out of the way but Damnatio cuts through them both, mortally wounding the two mages and ending the Black Bulls' support.

Charmy hides Gauche and Grey's bodies under some cotton while Secre uses her magic to try and seal their wounds. The rest of the Black Bulls continue their assault on Damnatio who quickly defeats them using hissecond magic attribute and invades the Door of Fate ritual site. The efforts of the Black Bulls were not in vain however as their stalling allowed Asta to emerge through the portal. Asta quickly defeats Damnatio, allowing the Witch Queen to use up all her magic to heal the injuries of all the injured Black Bulls. After the Black Bulls are healed, Asta reveals his new ability to share his Anti-Magic with allies using the Demon-Dweller Sword and shares his power with them, transforming their appearances and magic power.^[94] The squad is then introduced toIchika Yami, Yami's sister who came with Asta through the portal.^[95] Now imbued with anti-magic powers, the Black Bulls and Ichika depart for the Clover Kingdom.

The Black Bulls arrive just as the rest of the magic knight squads are on the verge of being overwhelmed against Lucius's forces.^[96]

• Transmutation Magic:^[72] Grey uses this magic to disassemble substances and reassemble them into other substances.^[97] She can transmute physical objects,^[98] as well as magical ones.^[99] Due to her ability to permanently change non-magical substances, Grey is ranked as anArcane Stage mage.^[100] She often uses the magic to restore her allies' injured bodies.^{[98][101][102]}

Magic Convert

• Transformation Magic: Grey uses this form of magic to take the appearance of other human beings or objects.^[10][103] Unlike normal Transformation Magic, she is also able to transform objects other than herself.^[104]

Gauche Adlai[]

Among the Black Bulls,Gauche Adlai is among the closest to Grey. Ever since Gauche saved her from some bandits, he gave her the will to move forward. During the Temple Battle Royale in the Seabed Temple, Grey listened to Gauche's advice that allowed them to beat two members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. In the aftermath, Grey was touched when Gauche complimented on Grey's potential in Transformation Magic.

During the battle against Dante Zogratis, Gauche received a near fatal wound, which brought Grey to tears. Her desire to save him was so strong that she was able to use her magic to heal him. It was during this event, that Grey revealed how she wanted Gauche to look at her more.

Gordon Agrippa[]

Grey shares similar levels of being unable to properly communicate with others likeGordon Agrippa. While Gordon wants to get along with Grey, she often finds him scary. Two cases were how she was frightened when Gordon revealed his doll collection of the Black Bull members to her and Gauche, and when she along with Asta and Gauche visited his family.
